What is Viral Marketing?
Category: Viral Marketing | Date: 2002-07-22 |
Viral marketing is not a new idea, it has been around for hundreds of years, commonly know as "Word of mouth".
Long before advertising really started, the only way that Businesses managed to survive, was by getting the word out that they offered good quality, service and usually a *miracle* product that would solve the customers problem.
Think about when traveling salesman were selling their *cure all* medicine, they would arrange for someone to claim that this medicine cured whatever had ailed them, and within hours the traveling salesman would have sold all his stock, he would then move on to the next town and do the same thing again.
So as you can see *word of mouth* is a very powerful form of marketing.
Viral Marketing works on exactly the same principle, but with the introduction of the Internet, you are now able to offer your *miracle* product or service to the *Whole Wide World*.
There are different forms of *viral marketing* but the concepts are the same, in plain words just *get the word out* and your sales will multiply like a *virus*.
How can you do this on the internet?
By......
Adding a *Tell a Friend* box at your web site.
Replicating your web site (as in having your own Affiliate Program).
Giving away a personalized Ebook that has your Web Site link or affiliate program link embedded in it and allowing others to give the Ebook away free leaving your web site links intact.
Allowing people to reprint your articles for their own Ezine or web site and including your resource box.
Submitting an article for publication with other Ezine Publishers, the Ezine publisher will include your resource box at the end of the article, giving you unlimited exposure for free.
If you offer a free online service, such as FFA advertising, Classifieds or Search Engine Submissions, allow others to offer your service for free on their web site.
Giving away a free award to web masters for design, quality or whatever, they place the award on their web site and of course if anyone clicks on the award they go directly to *your web site*
By joining Viral Marketing Sites, here is an example how this idea works.
Let's assume you get 20 sign ups for your Viral Marketing site, those 20 people will have your link on their Viral Marketing site in position #2 (their own link will be placed in position #1).
If 30% of those 20 people get 20 sign ups, that will equate to 120 sites with your advertising link in position #3.
If 30% of those 120 people get 20 sign ups each, that is 720 sites with your advertising link in position #4.
and so on........
I am sure you can now see the cumulative effect of Viral Marketing and why many online marketers feel this is the *most* powerful form of marketing available today.
