Good Web Site Design Tips

A site that is hard to read or navigate will drive potential customers away quicker than anything. Here are some tips to keep that from happening.
1. Plan Your Site
Have a clear idea written down on paper of what your sites purpose will be. This will help you maintain continuity.
2. Ugly Pages Chase Visitors Away
Avoid using complex or dark colored backgrounds.
Use common fonts such as Arial (Helvetica), Times Roman, Verdana or Tahoma.
Dont use visible counters. Usually a sign of amateur sites.
Check browser compatibility. A good source for this would be Net Mechanic (http://www.netmechanic.com) or Any Browser (http://www.anybrowser.com)
Use the alt text tag so if your visitors have their browsers graphics turned off, they can still understand your page.
3. Check and Recheck All Your Links
When your potential customer sees a page that says "404 Error- File Not Found", it may be the last time they visit. Take advantage of the free HTML Check and Link Check offered at Net Mechanic to minimize this.
4. Make Your Pages Simple To Read and Understand
USE SPELL CHECK! I am constantly amazed at the number of pages I visit that have typos. It looks very unprofessional and there is no excuse for it.
Use simple words and short paragraphs.
Use ample white space.
Keep your total page size to around 55k. Most people dont like to scroll through long pages.
5. Give It To Me Now!
If your page takes too long to load, your visitor will leave-period. Here are some tips to keep that from occurring:
Limit your files to no more than six per page if possible.
Keep your graphics files around 8-10K each at the most.
Only use one or two Java Applets or animations per page.
Define the size of your graphics. This allows the text on your page to be displayed while the graphics are loading. This is accomplished by adding H=200 W=100 for example, after the IMG SRC tag. The 200 and 100 would be the height and width in pixels that you want your image to appear as.
No single formula will guarantee the success of any site, however using these design tips will certainly give you a competitive edge.
