HOW TO REALLY JOIN THE WEB WITH YOUR WEBSITE
Category: Website Design and Development | Date: 2003-10-05 |
Think about the metaphors we use for this system of computer connections that we are on: The InterNET, the world wide WEB. They are all based on a similar image...thousands of strands connected together in myriad ways, leading to a whole system where everyone is connected to everyone else.
Its strange, then, how many websites arent really a part of this web. Instead, they are more like hermits, living alone and separated from everyone else: There is only one way to get there, and that is only if you know the secret password of the URL. Is it any surprise that these websites fail? With the intense competition for customers attention, you must be able to use the webs inter-connectedness to be successful.
But, how can you make your website more integrated into the whole web? Well, there are several cheap (and in some cases, even money-making!) steps you can try:
1) Use links to guide your customers. The most successful websites use the link system to generate interest and profits. Try to have links to your site on other peoples pages, especially those that attract an audience similar to your own. The more entrances there are to your website, the better the chance that people will come in. Also, have links out to other websites. In many cases, you can generate profits based on how many people use these links to get to commercial websites.
2) Join a WebRing. If your site is special-interest, then there might be a WebRing that you can join. Think of a WebRing as a community of websites that share a common interest and promote each other. By joining one of these, you are assured that you will be getting an audience that has some of the characteristics that you are looking for, at least in terms of interests. In many cases, joining one of these WebRings is free, which makes it a very cost-effective promotion tool.
3) Get on search engines. If your audience doesnt know your sites URL, the only way besides links for them to arrive is through a search engine. Depending on the amount of time and money you want to spend, you should try to get listed on the engines that you think will be most frequented by your customers. Once again, knowing what special interests your customers have will be helpful here, since there are many special-interest search engines that you can join quite cheaply.
Think about your own website. What kinds of connections are there in and out of it? Is it a part of the web or is it a stand-alone enterprise? If it is standing by itself, theres a good chance that it might fall. Instead of letting that happen, use the nature of the World Wide Web to help support your enterprise!
