Setting Your Site Apart From the Rest
Category: Website Design and Development | Date: 2003-10-27 |
Have you ever noticed that about 75% of the sites on the Internet look almost identical and say the same thing, practically word for word? Why are there so many copycats out there? Because copying someone else is easy, but coming up with your own site design and content is far from it.
The problem with building your site the easy way, by copying what everyone else did, is that you look just like everyone else. Once upon a time, someone built a site that looked just right and had the perfect content. Then one day, someone came along and ripped off that initial person, then another and another did the same. And people are still doing it today.
My advice to you is to take the road less travelled. Set yourself apart from the millions of other sites that will blend into the crowd and be lost forever. If nothing else, you will at least avoid a copyright lawsuit.
So how does one begin to create something original? Well, the first thing you have to do is study the competition--not to steal their graphics and content! You can steal a concept, an idea, but you cant blatantly steal word-for-word copy, graphics, or an
all-over design. Simply look at what others are doing and do something a bit different.
Have a brainstorming session with a few friends or family members. Talk about what has been done in the past and how you can avoid old pitfalls or expand on new ideas.
Include original information that your competition cant possibly offer. How do you get this never-before-seen info? You create it. You can write your own articles, or have someone else write them for you, and set up a page to house your masterpieces of originality.
If you are having trouble coming up with an original look for your website, try an amateur designer. Harness the talent of college students who are willing to work for pennies. They can help with the design, branding and color palette, then you can
either build the site or find another starving college student to do it for you.
Remember, the people who really succeed in this world are those who train themselves to think about things in a unique and original way. While your competitors are wasting their time playing copycat, spend your time thinking of ways to be
different.
