Open source values: transparency
Date: 11/06/07

Every political era brings with it a new dominant medium, whose values are internalized by the general public and shape the resulting debate. The TV values of the last generation are slowly passing from the scene. These are being replaced by the values of the Internet, and the most important, I feel, is a growing demand for transparency.

This is the Paris Hilton of product announcements. All those looks (they say), all that money, but what's it all about, really, other than hype? In the case of Ms. Hilton, the answer was not much. At some point the markets are going to tell Google it should either put up or shut up. Ads on a search engine just aren't that sexy.

This box has a modem and Ethernet port built-in, but you still have to pay to get online. Even if you have a $10/month plan, you also need a land-line phone, which costs $30-50/month. Want broadband? You're looking at $50/month, plus either a phone or cable connection. Figure $100/month easy.

Once we become as conversant with social networking as we are with e-mail, once we learn its netiquette and apply it, everyone benefits. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, MySpace, ZDNet, everyone. Even you. Most especially you.
