Ad-Aware?
Date: 11/10/04
(Software) Keywords: virus
I've been getting a lot of pop-ups just today, after not having any for a very long time thanks to AOL's pop-up-stopper. I figured the best idea would be to run ad-aware repeatedly until the search comes up clean. However, I've never run this program before, and I've heard stories about Ad-Aware accidentally deleting critical files that Windows (XP in my case) needs to run.
Should I be worried about this? Even if there is a backup of the files somehow, isn't it possible that something in the registry would be deleted that would stop windows from running altogether? I also selected the advanced option for all files to be sent to the recycling bin first, but is this a guarantee that I can protect my computer from possible disaster?
Everyone I've talked to has said the risk does exist, but the benefits ultimately outweigh any of the possible bad. I already ran a Norton Virus Scan too, which came up clean. Any advice? Thanks! (sorry for x-posting)

SP2 issues, hanging computer, cd/dvd issues, Help????
Date: 09/06/04
(Software) Keywords: security, virus
My mother has a computer that we ordered from tiger direct (www.tigerdirect.com) last year online, summertime. When i originally got the computer, one of the memory slots was bad so i sent it back and got a replacement. The new board has been working alright but lately there have been more and more problems popping up and i'm wondering if this is the fault of the mobo.
Various problems include:
-DVD drive occasionally will not spin up and read disks
-CD burner refuses to burn cds
-computer randomly hangs in the middle of varying tasks
Also, upon installation of service pack 2 to winXP, it now hangs on boot and doesn't get to the logon screen. It doesn't happen all the time and it seems kind of random as to when it decides not to work. All the cables are firmly plugged in and there are no issues that i can see. Computer is definately virus free.
I'm not sure if this is all mobo related or what, but any suggestions/helpful hints/places to post these problems again would be appreciated.
Specs:
P4 3.06Ghz w/hyperthreading
Via p4x400 chipset
1GB DDR333 RAM
GeForce 4 Ti4200
cd drive
dvd drive
300 Watt PSU
The RAM is 2x512 sticks in the 1st 2 settings. Originally i got a mobo that had a faulty 1st slot and i got it replaced with the new mobo. it was fine for a couple months then started going bad. The vid driver is a NVIDIA GeForce Ti4200 version 4.2.3.0 The BIOS is the original version, not updated.
I have 2 80Gig drives in the machine as well, each has their own windows XP installation. Today, after installing windows SP2 on one of the drives, it killed windows. and by killed i mean after it tells you to restart it hung on boot on the windows XP splash screen with the little bar running along the bottom. so after backing up all the data, the drive is still readable, just can't run windows off it, i tried installing SP2 on the other drive, with the 1st drive unplugged. same problem. reinstalled windows on the 1st drive and it now works, but is horribly out of date and behind on security updates. i'm scared to now update to SP2 on this machine. Updated to SP2 on 3 other machines without a problem. Any dieas for any of these issues?

hey, my name is Phil. i started learning PHP back in september. for some reason it didn't occur to me until now to join some lj communities about it. i just did some poking around about what looked like a virus going around some good sites and thought i'd leave a note about it, sorry if this is old news for you all:
for those of you who run your own websites, there is a nasty worm going around servers with older versions of phpBB2 installed. it's called NeverEverNoSanity; if you go to a website and see a black background with red text which says "This site has been defaced!" then you know it got hit. anyway, upgrading to the latest version, phpBB 2.0.11 is supposed to fix the problem. just thought i'd let you know.

Dreamweaver MX 'Flashing' Problem?
Date: 02/27/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: virus, web
I'm using Dreamweaver on Windows XP SP2. I haven't used it on the machine for a while and I'm sure it worked fine before! When it's starting up and loading the windows the top third of the screen will flash. Basically a grey block without content appears over the window (in code or design mode) covering any code, the row of buttons and the blue program bar above flashes too. It repeats it if I alt-tab to another program and back. Most annoyingly, it will have that block flash whenever I click the mouse button anywhere near there.
I've gone through the preferences but can't see anything obvious, searched the web, tried disabling the anitvirus/firewall stuff (AVG/Sygate Personal) but it hasn't helped. Anyone know how to fix it?

Tips for Installing a Virtual SQL Server on a Windows 2003 Cluster
Date: 01/14/05
(SQL Server) Keywords: software, asp, virus, microsoft
Here's a few things I learned yesterday that might be helpful for all. (After working through some frustrating bugs.)
1) Enable MS DTC in the Add/Remove Programs app in Control Panel ( it's under Windows Options --> Application Server --> Details. This service is no longer enabled by default in the Windows setup.
2) You have to set up a resource for the MS DTC service. ( Read about it here, in the transcript portion: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;888121 )
3) UNINSTALL TERMINAL SERVICES ON ALL NODES!! ( Even if you don't think you installed it in the first place!! )
4) TURN OFF VIRUS SCAN SOFTWARE ( and any other unecessary services that may be running)
5) Make sure you set up a server alias via the Client Network Utility on the node from which you're doing the installation BEFORE launching setup app. Make sure your service account has rights to log in to both nodes.

AOL Network
Date: 03/02/05
(Computer Help) Keywords: virus
I'm experimenting with something. I used to be an AOL member back in the day. I also recently used a 6 month (plus 3 more) trial just so I would have McAfee Virus Scan for free (included with AOL service). I cancelled AOL, uninstalled it, lost McAfee and all was fine. I didn't like the idea of being unprotected though so I asked someone if I could try something.
I downloaded AOL again and asked a good friend if I could log onto their account just long enough to download McAfee Virus Scan. After that was successful, I uninstalled AOL. I uninstalled anything that said "AOL" in it through my Add/Delete Programs menu (except "AOL Instant Messenger"). Everything seems to be fine and McAfee is still up and running, but there is one small annoyance. The AOL Network icon (and program) will not go away. I was pretty sure that it went away last time when I uninstalled. I was thinking that it might have to do with the fact that I'm still using McAfee and that it needs the AOL Network to verify the subscription account. If so, that's fine, but I would like to see if McAfee can still function without this.
I don't know why AOL even has this program available for broadband users. I've never used it, but from what I gather, it's a dialer that lets dial-up users sign on without having to load the AOL program. There is also an option to sign on using BYOA. But if you have your own high-speed connection already, there is no need to even use AOL to gain a connection. They discontinued the AOL High-Speed service over a year ago (AOL offered users their own high-speed service, in case you didn't know). As far as I know, it's still available to those who had it before they discontinued it though.
So yeah, I just need to get rid of the AOL Network stuff. Thank you.
