1. Slow JavaScript rollovers in Firefox

    Date: 02/02/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, java, linux, seo

    Hi all, I'm new around here. Have you ever run into amazingly slow javascript rollovers in the Windows build of Firefox?  Check out this little test to see what I'm talking about.  Basically there are 4 absolutely positioned gifs on top of each other, with the links to the side set up with onMouseOver events that toggle a given gif's src.  This works just fine in IE 6, Safari, and Mac and Linux builds of Firefox, but in Firefox on Windows it's painfully slow.  Or at least it is on my machine. Others have told me that it looks fine. A version with all the state's counties practically locks up my browser.

    Any thoughts?  A known bug, perhaps?  Any better techniques? I've tried toggling style.visibility instead of the src, but to no avail.

    I have a Javascript popup box on my site.. I don`t really use JS much as it is bad for SEO.. Within this presized popup box, I have a link to another page. When clicked, that link opens in the already presized popup box.. How do I make it so it opens in the parent window? Google hates me. T_T`;;

    Thanks in advance. (^^,)

  3. Rollover

    Date: 03/11/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: seo

    Okay, I am trying to create a onMouseOver Event that
    will change the frame from frame 1 for example to frame
    3 when the button is hovered over and then when the
    mouse leaves the button it returns to frame 1. This is
    so that when the button is pressed it goes to another
    page outwith the f l ash page.

    Currently i have the onRelease bit working using

    Buttontwo.onRelease = function (){
    gotoAndStop("Scene 1", 3);
    };

    how do i make the rollovers work, I don't much flash and
    am not great with it, any help gladly received.

  4. Because htmlhelp is no help at all...

    Date: 04/05/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web, seo

    I'm trying to use a marquee in a header on my LiveJournal that will stop when the viewer's mouse hovers over it. I've seen this done as news or headline tickers on websites. (Note: I do not want the marquee tag that has the text stop to one side... I want the text to marquee as usual, only stopping on a mouseover.)

    I used the following code:

    but it looks like this when I use it:

    Hover your mouse over this to make it stop!

    The text doesn't stop moving as I have commanded it to in the tag. I've been to many HTML websites to see if I'm doing anything wrong, but I can't see any difference between my code and theirs.

    I'm able to view this kind of marquee perfectly on other sites, stopping the text on mouseover and everything... is it just a LJ incompatibilty? Please help me!

    Thanks in advance.

  5. :hover broken in IE

    Date: 04/09/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, java, web, seo

    i tried to redesign my website today and started to use a lot of :hover elements in my css to make my TDs borders highlight when you hover over them
    of course, i designed it all in mozilla firefox, so as soon as i tried it in IE it broke :(

    i spent about an hour googling for helpful websites, and all i've come up with is javascript code to put in the td mouseOver tag

    is there a better or easier way to make IE work with :hover in CSS?
    if not, what is the best way of getting round this lack of :hover support in IE?

  7. Help with Mouse Clicks

    Date: 05/20/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: java, web, seo

    Hello all. I am currently desinging a website for and antique shop in my community and I need some help on trying to figure out how to achieve a certain look and code.

    This is what I have so far:
    http://shoppicayune.com/A/Antiques/iframe_page2.htm
    Please note the text link at the top. Basically what I want to achieve is when you click on one of images surrounding the iframe, it loads the image into the iframe. However I am not very sure how I would go about doing this or if I using an iframe is even the best method.

    I have managed to find a script that allows me to achieve what basically want to do, however I want the images to go all the way around the center large display window as I have in the page linked above, and I want it to load the center large image with a click instead of a mouseover.
    Here is the link to the script I have:
    http://shoppicayune.com/picayuneflorists/index.htm

    I am not to savy with Javascript, but I have Front page and I can edit a script if I have one.

    Does anyone have any advice about how I could go about achieving this look or a script that could do what I want? Also if anyone knows any other communities that I might find better information surrounding this topic, that would also be helpful.

    Thank you in advance for you suggestions and advice.

  11. Hey..

    Date: 06/03/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: cms, database, sql, web, seo, microsoft

    Hey everybody. I hope there are some smart database people out there to make up for my lack of knowledge.

    Anyway, I have a (hopefully) rather simple question.

    I work at the local university maintaining the webpage for the nursing program here. The ladys I work for are not very computer smart, so I'm trying to develop an easier way for them to upload new data to class pages, new homework assignments, new lecture slides, etc etc etc. Basically a kind of micro-cms system.

    Yes, I'm reinventing the wheel, but I feel it will be a good experience for me.

    Well, I'm using .NET for this (C#) because of what's available here at school, and while in the end, everything will be on the SQL Server, for development purposes the webmaster for the school has said that I need to use MS Access.

    Blech. Hopefully I won't have to change a whole lot of stuff for the migration to happen, but for now I'm stuck.

    Unfortunately, while I can figure out the Queries and the basic commands, actually connecting to a MS Access database is proving to be rather difficult for me. I cannot seem to find an authoratative guide on what all I need to put to create the connect.

    Most of the functions are going to be located in a seperate file, and once its all compiled, it should (hopefully) work. But I cannot seem to find what the connect string is.

    In my databaseConnect() function I have this:

    void databaseConnect()
    {
    String connectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.Oledb.4.0;";
    connectionString += "Data Source=I:/web/nursing/dev/resources/exams/nursingExams.mdb;";
    createUpdateExamConnection = new OleDbConnection (connectionString);
    databaseOpen();
    } //end databaseConnect

    For some reason, this just doesn't seem to work.

    I've imported the correct thing, as far as I can tell...
    using System.Data.OleDb;

    But I'm stuck.

    Any info that you guys can give me would be appreciated.

    Thanks so much!

    http://transgeneral.net , my top buttons are pretty b0rked, I can't seem to figure out how to get them to work! 13. Features I'd Like To See (Anyone know if they exist?)

    Date: 07/27/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: seo, apache

    One easy, one hard.

    1) Sounds for various Firefox events. You know, starting with the basics like a click when you select a link - ala IE. Perhaps a light tick when you mouseover a link, then a solid click when you select it. Possibly other sound events, user configurable of course. Is there an addon that I can use to add this?

    Next, a bit harder. I was thinking - how can I visualize my frequently visited bookmarks in some other way than simply a toolbar? How can I combine this with the concept of a customised homepage? I run Apache on my local system to give myself a custom homepage, but that doesn't seem to give me a lot of options as I'm not an advanced programmer. So, feature 2:

    2) Bookmark "Gallery View".... This would be sortof like the multi-surf on TV sets where you can see a 4x4 grid of channels, so you can see 16 at a time, see what's on all of them, either select one or go to the next 16. I'd love to see this in FireFox. I would see a grid of "thumbnails" of my most frequently visited bookmarks. Maybe 3x2 would work best. It could either be images of the page, or could actually be frames, but either way it would be a *live* thumbnail. That way I could see at a glance which one had updates. The pages would be scaled down so I could see more than just the top corner, and you'd click it (or a button below) for a full-sized version.

    Anyone know of such addons/utilities?

    (EDIT): Here's a link to a mockup a guy did that basically gives the idea of what I'm asking for: Bookmarks Gallery View. As far as I can tell, it's just a mockup. Plus, I'd like to see it take advantage of broadband and actually load the pages live for the thumbnail (only 4 at a time on-screen for example, to prevent slamming your whole list)...

  14. Search Engine Marketing/Optimization

    Date: 08/16/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: software, technology, web, seo

    Today is my second day working at a web development company and I discovered that I am going to be "heading-up" one of the services we offer, which is search engine marketing/optimization. The owner of the company has asked me to re-think the process they have been using for this in the past because it's become outdated (using the same method for 6 years when you're dealing with technology is way too long).

    Do any of you have any websites, programs, or methods for search engine optimization/marketing that would be worth looking into?

    The program that we are using for SEO is called Web Position Gold 2. If you know anything about this program, what are your opinions as far as how it compares to other SEO systems? The version we are running is somewhat old, and one of my options is to upgrade to the newest version (Web Position Gold 3 Platinum), but if there is better software out there I would like to look into that.

  17. JavaScript Image Rotation Issues

    Date: 12/16/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, seo

    I've been using a bit of script that loads a random image, URL and text into a page each time the page is loaded.

    This seems to work fine for up to 15 images/arrays, but over that, it starts to complain that:
    "Error: 'image.href' is null or not an object"

    Here's the code:

    function create() {
            this.width = ''
            this.height = ''
            this.src = ''
            this.href = ''
            this.border = ''
            this.mouseover = ''
            this.sponsor = ''
    }
    scs = new Array()
    for(var i=1; i<=19; i++) { scs[i] = new create() }

    The script is loaded from the head as an external .js file and called in the body as this:

    Any ideas why it starts failing after 15 arrays? I've tried 'easier' URLs and different images to no avail.

    I've also tried a different script within the body since, but this one rotates the images all the time and too quickly. Any ideas on how to slow it down so that the images are changed say every 20 seconds (20000 milliseconds)? I've tried some setTimeouts in various places but can't seem to slow it down. Code:

  18. annoying problem with flash 8

    Date: 01/15/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: browser, seo

    I'm having a really annoying problem with macromedia flash 8. (Running win98 & IE 6.0):

    I installed the flash 8 plugin, and my browser keeps flickering. I uninstall it, the flickering goes away, but now i'm prompted 800 times a day to re-install it whenever I go to a page that has any kind of flash.

    I want to install it, but the "flickering" is really annoying .. it happens everytime I pass my mouseover a link or just when there is a flash on a page.

    Any help will be appreciated!

    thanks =)

  20. a couple of layout bugs/questions?

    Date: 01/30/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: seo

    hi folks, i have a couple problems that i'm trying to fix.

    i'm working on a new layout and almost have it looking perfect across all browswers, however i have a few problems;

    • the logo in the top right corner doesn't sit flush with the top in FF

    • is there any way to get bulletpoints to change bgcolour in IE, i was told to try onmouseover="this.bg='#f00000'" but i've had no joy with that.

    • also i read once that i could transform text, depending on letter position, do you have any idea how i would go about making the first and last letter of a 'blockquote' twice the size?

    erm, that's about it, i think. you can check it out here: http://creed-online.net/test/ it might require a hard refresh.
