  11. virus? adware? something else really annoying?

Date: 03/04/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, spyware, yahoo, google

hey everyone... here's my problem, i hope someone can help.

i was on a couple sites looking for info on programs to download to convert a video file so i could burn it to a dvd and watch it on my tv (cause whatever file i have it as doesn't work). anyway, while i was on this site, a couple of those activex things popped up and i (stupidly) accepted them. then i got all this crap on my computer. most of it called "azesearch". so, i disabled the add ons that it installed on my tool bar. then i scanned my computer with ad-adware, which got rid of 44 files. i did a search for any file with "azesearch" in it. deleted around 8 of those. and now.. well, everything seems to be working okay, EXCEPT yahoo search or google search (there could be more not working but thats the only two ive noticed so far). the google search wont even work past the homepage (i get 'page cannot be displayed), also the same when i try to activate my gmail invite. the yahoo search page looks different. i mean, if you glance at it, it looks the same, but most of the links dont work. it has a "popular searches" column on the right which is all porn related. and if i search for something, it gives me a bunch of random non-related results, mostly about spyware, virus protection, or other "free sony vaio!" type of scams.

so, does anyone know what the problem could be or how to fix it? any help would be greatly appreciated.

btw, if this should be posted in a different community, please let me know. thanks again.

    slt

EDIT: i use windows xp and IE if that helps.

  12. nofollow

Date: 01/01/70 (Webmaster View)    Keywords: software, web, spam, yahoo, google

Google, MSN and Yahoo! announced their support for rel="nofollow" attribute to hyperlinks. They will ignore links with this attribute to prevent comment spam. Movable Type and other blog software makers and service providers also announed their support. Movable Type released a plugin to modify all links in comments and trackbacks to include the rel="nofollow" attribute.

    Links:

figby.com says: "Dishonest webmasters will use this attribute ... on all external links, to prevent precious PageRank from leaking out of their sites." and,

we'll also see people who sell links based on their PageRank and then add the nofollow attribute later, making the purchased links worthless-but as far as I'm concerned, anything that hinders the widespread practice of selling links for ranking can't be a bad thing.

1.)PHP. Can someone please help me? I'm confused about it. See, I want to create a forum and a thing where you can post comments on articles of sorts, and maybe chatrooms, I'm not sure yet about that.

2.)Videos. Is there any way I can take out the actual video part and just have the audio? Like converting it to .MP3?

    Thanks,

  14. Reverse IP and webhosts

Date: 03/08/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, hosting, yahoo

Hi, I have a technical question about webhosts and servers. Let me know if I should post my question in another community.

I am using Yahoo webhosting. I did a whois search of my domain name using www.whois.sc. Whois.sc reports that the revese IP address Web server hosts 11,000 websites. Does this mean that 11,000 share the same IP address? Does Yahoo's DNS and network uses some kind of network address translator (NAT) to route packets to the proper web server and website?

The revers DNS of the IP address points to a Yahoo.com address, not my domain. Anyway, I am just wondering. It's no big deal.

I need to read the help files about access logs. Later everyone.

  17. Anyone have experience with 2.5" hard drive to 5.25" IDE adaptor?

Date: 03/14/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: yahoo, google

I have a laptop hard drive that I've been holding on from when my older compaq presario 1200 gave out, and lately I saw a 3.5" to 5.25" IDE adaptor online, and I bought it in hopes of getting the data off of the old laptop hard drive. ...except um, I'm not sure where Pin 1 is on the laptop hard drive. There are four pins off on the left, and then a lot of pins on the right. There is one pin missing on the bottom row of the side that has a lot of pins.

I've heard that laptop hard drives get their power and i/o from the cable that connects it to the motherboard, so I don't want to risk assuming the laptop hard drive is like a normal 5.25" hard drive (which always have pin 1 and 2 closest to the power input). I looked around on google and yahoo for a few hours with the keywords "3.5" hard drive, pin settings" or "3.5" hard drive, pin numbers" but all I was able to learn was that the four separate pins are jumper pins.

... So umm.. on a laptop hard drive, where is Pin1?

PS - is a 3.5" to 5.25" adapter stable enough to be used as a long term set-up? (as in, would I be able to use the laptop hard drive like a normal 5.25" hard drive once I have it set up correctly?)

  18. New AIM virus or whatever

Date: 03/16/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: html, security, yahoo, google

T_T I was reading away messages and my brother's was about new pictures or whatever, so him being far away I was interested in seeing them. I believe the link was http:// www.TravisArket. com/photos. pif or at least something similar to it. Whatever you do, don't click on it! I ended up downloading shit onto my computer and now it's infected (at least, more than before). I deleted the files I downloaded earlier, scanned my computer with PestPatrol, Ad-aware, and AVG.. The first two detected some junk and I deleted it, while AVG didn't detect anything. I searched through recently modified files and deleted what I believe was the AIM away message crap. However, even after deleting it I still have the problem (I think). Does anyone know what I'm talking about? This is aggravating. How do I get rid of this?

Ooh ok, so now it's just randomly but frequently putting up away messages now. It says, "NEW PICS FROM THE BEACH http:// www.TravisArket .com/photos. pif !!!!!" =(

Also, I've discovered that I now cannot view my processes, memory, and the other stuff alt ctrl del does. Every time I try to open it, it closes after about one or two seconds. I tried searching for more information about this on Yahoo and Google, but apparently my textboxes aren't working. I keep receiving the error message "Your current security settings do not allow you to send HTML forms." I know that I had not recently changed any settings whatsoever.. I do believe that my cookies have now been disabled, or at least on Yahoo, cuz I've just been logged out and cannot log back in due to "disabled cookies." =(

Edit: New fake URL at the domain of softhue.com, same ending though.

  19. Yahoo Delivers! POP access?

    Date: 03/17/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: yahoo

I've been googling and i can't find a straight answer.

I would like to use Yahoo on my T-bird. I know Yahoo used to have POP3 access. Then they required YahooDelivers!. Do they still let you in if yousign up for YD!? or is it truly a pay only feature now.

If I can't do it. I'll have to use something like YahooPOPs? i think it's called. I've familiar with programs that will let me access my yahoo accnt on POP but what about sending mail. What kind of options am I looking at for SMTP servers? Are there free ones out there I could use ?
