  3. Session Variables

    Date: 02/21/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, html, asp, java

    My ASP application uses several session variables. If the user exits properly - by using the in browser controls then they will clear (using session.abandon) and all will be good.

    The problem is that there is a single HTML form with a javascript menu that remains open. If the user does not exit through the controls I have given them, but x's out of the browser, and then goes back in to the application - the session variables still exist.

    I'm trying to figure out how/where I can clear these variables. I can't do it when the form loads because it reloads many times, and I need to keep the session variables. I can't put it in the HTML menu page either, because that one never reloads.

    Any ideas/suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Ok, I've got a question for all the professionals out there. I've been looking for a while now to get into server-side web programming (PHP, ASP, JSP, SQL) for a little while now. While I do have experience working with these things working on personal projects, I have no professional experience. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I can do to more effectively represent myself in this way.

    In terms of skills, I'm talking a heavy PHP/MySQL background, with a focus on content managers and database served content.

    Just hoping someone might have some pointers. Feel free to ask me any questions.

  5. .ASP testing environment?

    Date: 02/02/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, asp

    Hi all!

    I'm fairly new to .ASP proramming, and would like to do make acid-testing a little easier. Client-side scripting is real simple - just preview in the browser. However testing server-side scripting is a little challenging. Every time I wish to test my code, I have to upload the page to a remote server. Although the final test is the final post, when I'm working on a page, I will make a bunch of small nip-and-tuck changes until I get it right and uploading every thirty seconds after making a minor change is a big pain in the rear. Is ther a way to set up a local .ASP testing environment on my own PC, so I don't have to repeatedly send up every little tweak and adustment done during a course of development?

    one thing i can say for pair is that they are RELIABLE, not that my silly software site needs ultra-reliability hosting or anything, but that's a nice aspect of pair.

    i have wanted to start a post on one of those subjects, but i have been very busy preparing for my move to chicago
    that time has been to short of late to write out the entire technical aspect of my project.
    im working on it though so expect to see it up here in the near future :).

  13. VBScript???

    Date: 01/27/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: html, asp

    Hello!
    I need to write a vbScript function on the client that is called either after or during the server-side Page_Load event. My boss seems to think I can just throw in script tags, like in old ASP, in the middle of my form and it will fire when it renders the html.
    However, it is not firing, but giving me the error:
    Statement cannot appear outside method body.

    I am assuming I have to put my script in an event of some sort, which leaves me with the page_load, which I cannot use, and a control's event, which I cannot use.

    Does anyone know if what my boss is saying is true???

    Thanks.

  14. Disappearing Controls

    Date: 01/24/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, web

    Can anyone tell me what the hell VS.NET's problem is that half the time it won't recognize controls if they are inside tables?

    I have the following snippet in my .aspx page:

        This account is currently on stop. Override or Delete?

        Reason for deletion:

    This fits with the codebehind declarations:
    Protected WithEvents btnOverride As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
    Protected WithEvents btnDelete As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
    Protected WithEvents btnContinue As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
    Protected WithEvents btnCancel As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button
    Protected WithEvents lblMessage As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Label
    Protected WithEvents txtReason As System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox
    Protected WithEvents pnlStop As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Panel
    Protected WithEvents pnlReason As System.Web.UI.WebControls.Panel

    So how come when I try to set "pnlStop.Visible = True", it works fine, but when I set "pnlReason.Visible = True", I get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object"? What is the difference between the two?

  15. Tracing

    Date: 01/13/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, sql, web

    I'm having some trouble with tracing. I have a static class whose method I call from a page that I'd like to get trace data from. The method looks like:

    public sealed class DbUtils
    {
    static public int ExecuteNonQuery(string sql, string dsn)
    {
      Trace.WriteLine("SQL", sql);
      int rowsAffected;

      OdbcConnection db     = new OdbcConnection(dsn);
      db.Open();
      OdbcCommand    cmd    = new OdbcCommand(sql, db);
      rowsAffected = cmd.ExecuteNonQuery();
      db.Close();
      return rowsAffected;
    }
    }
    I've got trace="true" set on both the page I'm looking at and at the application (web.config). I get a lot of trace output at the bottom of the page or by looking at trace.axd, but I never see the information I'm trying to output in this function. Anyone know what I'm missing?

    Update:
    Apparently Page.Trace (from the aspx.cs page) and System.Diagnostics.Trace classes are different beasts. The proper way to make it work is to do this:
    System.Web.HttpContext.Current.Trace.Write("SQL", sql);

  16. databinding issues... Take two

    Date: 01/06/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp

    Hello hello,

    Ok so here's (another) ASP.Net 2.0 question...

    I've got a GridView that's bound to a table that has several lookups:

    Field A, B and C are foreign keys. B & C's values depend on A so if A changes, so must the possible values for B & C.

    I store A's value in a Session variable. This works out nicely 'cause in ASP.net 2.0, you can set Select Parameters to values of Session variables. However -- when I change the value of the Session variable, the following error occurs:

    Databinding methods such as Eval(), XPath(), and Bind() can only be used in the context of a databound control.

    I'm guessing that it's due to the following problem: the dropdowns I use for looking up the values of B & C are not happy about re-binding while the row is being edited, either because of the SelectedValue binding or simply because it will not re-bind to the datasource I use for the lookup.

    Any idears?

    tia

  17. Curious bug, or problem with code?

    Date: 01/03/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: asp, web, microsoft

    I've got a curious error with ASP.NET 2.0 but before I go reporting it to Microsoft, I thought I'd toss it around here:

    I've been playing around with the new GridView control and so far it's been quite nice with the new gimmicks -- cuts about 90% of my code straight out. However... Inserting isn't implemented yet. It is, however, implemented in the DetailsView control.

    So I decided to tackle the problem this way:

    MyForm
    |
    -------> MyMultiView
    |
    -------------> View1 => MyGridView, MyInsertButton
    |
    -------------> View2 => MyDetailsView

    I have a form with a multiview. The multiview has two views, one with a Gridview and a button entitled 'Insert', the other with a DetailsView. For viewing/editing/deleting, I use the GridView. For insertion, I switch views to the DetailsView and change mode to insert. So far so good.

    Next, when the DetailsView changes modes (back to readonly), I have it switch back to the original view. Here's where the error occurs: any other action throws the following exception...

    Description:
    An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web
    request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and
    where it originated in the code.

    Exception Details:

    position of the controls added during the initial request.

    So -- where is the problem coming from? Am I getting the events screwed up? Is there something I'm forgetting? Or is there really something amiss..?

    Just in case, here's the code:

    AdminMultiView.ActiveViewIndex = 4
    DetailsView1.ChangeMode(DetailsViewMode.Insert)
    End Sub

    Sub DetailsView1_ModeChanged(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
    If Not DetailsView1.CurrentMode = DetailsViewMode.Insert Then
    AdminMultiView.ActiveViewIndex = 0
    End If
