Search Engine
Date: 12/23/06
Keywords: database, google
Does anyone have any suggestions for a search engine script that I can use for my site? I'd like to allow users to search for things within my site [primarily videos], but the problem seems to hinge on the fact that I don't use databases to drive my site.
I wouldn't mind creating the search index myself, I just want something nice and clean to display results and all that. I looked at the option of adding a Google custom search engine to my site but I don't much like the branding and ads.
Any suggestions would be awesome!

ServerPronto

Keywords: web
Hello everyone.
I am a small business owner and I recently got a dedicated server at ServerPronto.
I am new to this so I have two questions:
1) Does anyone else have a server there and if you do, what are your experiences with it?
2) Based on their site, how do you think they compares to other services?
Really looking forward to some input!
[X Posted in Webhost]
Thanks,
Christina

Where can you get 1GB space and 50GB bandwidth for less than a dollar or more accurately, £0.50 per month?
Fan St. That's where.

'critical space' problem
Date: 04/22/06
Keywords: web
*
I'm not sure why, but every year, nearing summertime, I start getting automated messages from my ISP's server, that I am running out of space. In the past when I've asked him about this, he's always just given me more space +ultimately this hasn't been a problem.
This year he told me that I need to allow him to 'defrag' my space, then I can reload my entire website. It would be a LOT of work to put my (huge) website back up there. I have some nagging worry that I'll actually wind up with LESS space than I currently have.
AAARRRGGG!!
He explained that I've had my site up for 5+years now, the server area that holds my information needs to be defragged like a hard-drive (HUH!?!) +he explained that he cannot do maintenance for only my account because that would cause the accounts belonging to others to have down time.
Is this true? Would someone please kindly explain this to me?

getting a server
Date: 02/21/06
Keywords: web
Hey I am new to webdesigning...I have a few questions about getting a server.
-i use dreamweaver and I know I have to get a server for a remote site to upload my files to. I need to get a site that I can get a domain name for, and all that stuff. How exactly does that work?
-when i purchase a domain name and get a server, do they give me all the information and the password and all the stuff to type into the section for establishing a remote site?
-when i get the server, what would i select: ftp, local/network, etc..
-i dont need to get an additional file uploading program like cuteftp or anything if i have dreamweaver right? i assume i can just do the uploading straight on that program
sorry if these questions seem ridiculous, but i really just started learning and if you guys can help me out at all i would be so happy. any advice would be appreciated so much. thanks!

UK-based colocation?
Date: 02/13/06
Keywords: no keywords
Does anyone have any decent recommendations / is involved with UK-based colocation for servers? I've got several contacts in the US for it, and already do most of my colocation in datacentres over there, but I've got several clients who are requesting UK specific servers. However, most of the UK-specific colo services I've seen are downright extortionate for what they are. I don't require them to be managed, except for hardware maintenance where necessary, and that can be on a per-job basis if it comes down to it. Some of them are going to be fairly bandwidth hungry though.
Thanks in advance!
