  3. Hey guys

    Date: 02/02/05     Keywords: web, hosting

Hey I did a search on web hosting and found you guys. I have a question.

I have a 5-year domain name registration with Freewebs Domains (http://domains.freewebs.com) which I purchased for $75. However, they do not provide enough webspace initially and charge a little too much for additional space ($25 per 100 MB per year). So I had this idea and wanted to see if it would work.

I have a high-speed T1 connection at home with plenty of bandwidth and about 300 GB of hard drive space. What I want to do is be able to host my .com website from my computer at home using the computer as the host server. Is it possible to do this without spending too much money?

  4. Uh oh...

Date: 02/01/05     Keywords: web, hosting, google

Google just appeared on the ICANN register list.

There's a lot of strange things going on over there. And to be perfectly honest, I don't like it. Especially when it begins to directly affect me and my business.

I'm wondering when they're going to hit web hosting. After all, if they can easily offer a gig for mail, it's not entirely unreasonable to think about the concepts that they could offer for hosting...

I'm not sure when, but the Google I used to know and love appears to be turning into a bit of an evil child, the sort that morphs into a megacorp... although I could be mistaken, of course. Still, doesn't hurt to keep your eyes on it...

  6. Trustix Secure Enterprise Linux

    Date: 10/28/04     Keywords: web, linux

Has anyone tried trustix? Theres not much info about it on the web. I installed it tonight, and it seems like a pretty well put together linux distro. Very centered towards servers, and not workstations.

  8. Server parts?

    Date: 10/14/04     Keywords: linux

Normally I tend to have someone in the US assemble my systems for me, but I'm looking for the best / cheapest place to buy a 2U case, and newegg doesn't seem to do it, as that's one of my primary hardware sources. Any suggestions for that, and/or the hardware itself? Looking to build a Linux/FreeBSD gaming server, prolly based around an AMD 2800+ / nForce board rather than the Intel.

Suggestions welcome. The final resting place of the box is Fremont, California. Cheers! :)

  9. SpamAssassin 3.0.0!

Date: 09/24/04     Keywords: database, sql, spam

I upgraded my primary mail server to SpamAssassin 3.0.0 last night. So far so good, it has a full updated ruleset to catch more spam. I noticed 2.5.x was starting to let a lot slip through the cracks. It also has modules to store auto white listing and bayes in an sql database now which is sweet. So i have awl, bayes, and custom user preferences all stored in the sql database. So far its catching WAY more spam than the old version.

  10. What web host do you use?

Date: 09/11/04     Keywords: mysql, database, sql, linux

Just curious on what you guys use to host your sites. Pros/cons? Specs? Like myself:

    Site: Frankly Jason
    Host: Cyberpixels.com
Specs: 9.95/mo for 400 MBs, 15 GBs bandwidth, and uber amount of pop 3 emails, ftp accounts, sub-domains and mysql databases
    Server OS: RedHat Linux
    Control Panel: cPanel

Pros/cons: Everything runs pretty smoothly except the lag time on uploading to the FTP. Uploading is fast, just the connection with the ftp as each file goes onto the space.

  11. Hosting software and site panel

    Date: 09/06/04     Keywords: software, hosting

In your opinion, what is the best hosting software / site management panel? Why?

I mean, for example, cPanel, Plesk, Ensim, et cetera. Those are the three I've had experience with. I'm interested in both the host side and the end-user side, but especially the end-user side.

  12. Good Storage

    Date: 08/29/04     Keywords: no keywords

I'm looking for a good online storage space where I can upload my pics/videos. 500 MB plus would be great, would settle for at least 200 MBs. Free would be great as well, but if the service is cheap, I won't mind. If anyone can help me out, I would appreciate it!

  14. domain name renewal

    Date: 08/28/04     Keywords: no keywords

    *
As promised, here is the update on my most recent concern:

My domain name WAS renewed on the last day possible, just as promised by my ISP. It appeared in the WHO-IS listing the very next day. :)

I must say this is a load OFF my mind, and am VERY GLAD my ISP held true to his word, despite the fact that I am charged $24.95 for this service.

I have about another 6-months (pre-payment for discount), with this ISP, and so I am hoping things will be fine forever after,, but am too much the "realist" to try to fool myself into THAT level of mental comfort..

MY SINCERE APPRECIATION TO ALL WHOM HAVE SO PROMPTLY RESPONDED TO MY CONCERNS IN THIS COMMUNITY.
    THANK YOU ALL.
