search function
Date: 08/13/07
Keywords: mysql, html, database, sql
Is it possible to create a search function without using database?
If I design a site that's purely HTML, can I add a search function? There will many products on the page, and I want the user have the ability to search item name and list the page.
I wish I know MySQL and write backend. This is hard for me, probably will rely on frontpage extension.

I'm trying to make a drop down box appear when I hover over an item in a unordered list.
So far, I can manage to get it to display on Firefox, but in IE6 - nothing happens when I hover over the item.
Any idea why this is happening? Any pointers would be much appreciated!!

Pay-for-Download PDFs
Date: 08/10/07
Keywords: oscommerce, database, google, shopping
My Google-fu is mostly failing me on this one. I need to provide a PDF for download, payment via PayPal. I'd very much prefer that the payment automatically validate and set up a username/password for downloading, so I'm looking for something more than a simple PayPal button.
It's just one PDF, so the usual shopping carts I've used (like osCommerce) are really overkill. I found and tried ipnDownload, but so far I can't make it function - it'll add items to the database, but when I send and it processes payments, it doesn't produce an email to the purchaser, add them as users, or record the transaction, so there's no download possible. I'm attempting to sort through the code and figure out what's going wrong, but it's taking a very long time.
Any suggestions for other similar snippet programs or experience with the same error in this one greatly appreciated.

Exporting data to XLS
Date: 08/10/07
Keywords: php, html
Using Excel, I can create table cell linewraps by using Alt-Enter.
Using PHP (or plain HTML) I can create a "XLS" file using plain
tags. How can I insert multiple lines per cell using this method? If I use
, XLS treats each line as a new row. \n was ignored completely.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Javascript/Dreamweaver Problems
Date: 08/09/07
Keywords: java, web
I hope you might help me with a rather huge problem I'm having with a website. For some reason the java behaviors for the new code I wrote don't work in Explorer, but work in Firefox. These behaviors are in the menu. You can see the website here.
The odd part of this is that a few months ago, I wrote basically the same code for a menu here and it works in Explorer.
Do you have any clue what the problem is? If you don't, do you know where I can find help? Thank you for your help.

portfolio site
Date: 08/09/07

I'm a theatrical lighting designer working on putting together a portfolio site. I've been looking at other portfolios to see what is and isn't included and I've noticed that most are written in the third person. It just seems weird. This site is about a person trying to get a job. Third person just seems pretentious. I was wondering if this is an industry standard or the result of paying someone else to develop your portfolio? Is first person acceptable?

Special Exceptions for Safari

Keywords: browser, css
I know people swear up n down about CSS. But having used it exclusively for 10 months now, its a piece of crap. Only because every single browser needs special rules. I didnt need that with tables ... development time has more than doubled.
How do you load a special CSS page for Safari? I have the site looking good in FireFOx and IE but now safari is ignoring the CSS!

Flash 8 glitch?
Date: 08/07/07
Keywords: no keywords
I run Flash 8 at work (OS 10.3.9) and at home (OS 10.4). On both, there is a strange, annoying problem where everytime I go to another program, or even to the desktop, and then go BACK into Flash, I have to wait about 30 seconds until I can do anything. I have to watch the hourglass (or rather the spinning color wheel) and wait.
This is a relatively minor issue. But it can be very annoying and time-consuming especially when I'm frequently jumping between Flash and several other programs.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Is there a fix? Thanks!

FrontPage question
Date: 08/07/07
Keywords: no keywords
Hello again,
I've been working on my site, cosplaycassie.com for a while now. Now that I've done my index page and converted most of my old pages to match, I find myself wanting to make changes to the menu options on the left and right control panels. Is there a way to make them so that when I change them on the index, all the other pages update as well? I'd hate to have to go through and manually change it on each page every time I have a whim to add something new.
That being said, is there a FrontPage companion book that anyone could suggest? I've seen a few on amazon, but I was wondering if any of you have had personal experience with them?
Thanks!

Have a clicked link open in a new window--- Flash?
Date: 08/07/07
Keywords: browser, html
Ello again!
So here's another question I've come across in my quest to figure out building a page in Flash-- how do I have a link open in a new browser window? I'd love to know how to do it for both flash, and html because I have a basic link for those needing to update their flash plugin, in html.
And for anyone interested in seeing how my page is progressing, you can see it at: http://www.ufotofu.net/ufo_new.html
Many thank you's in advance!

Feedback

Hey guys,
just joined this community, good to find one specifically focused on web design. Figure I'll start out by asking for some feedback on this site: http://www.gorgeousfilms.com.au
It's a full flash ordeal, but that was the nature of the design spec. I'm actually starting to lean more towards to the world of hybrid sites that run on anything now, but nevertheless... feedback muchly appreciated

FireFox doesn't read CSS

Anyone have any ideas why FireFox doesnt read the CSS!? It works on the the dev server. On the live server it works with IE and Safari....

And the REAL oddity is that when I activate the FireFox Extension Web Developer to edit the CSS - it suddenly works! Until I close the Web Developer sidebar.

Site testing?
Date: 07/27/07
Keywords: browser, web
I was wondering if you guys would be so kind as to proof a site for me. Everything on there should work - the only thing that doesn't is the Corepoint Associates site. (Turns out my client shut their doors & took their site down -- didn't know that until this morning. oops)
Anyway, if you guys have time & can just take a walk through, let me know what you think, all that good junk, I'd really appreciate it. If you decide to comment, please let me know what browser & OS you're using and what kind of internet connection you run on so that I know how I'm doing on my cross platform. (It's been short notice, so I'm totally not Mac tested. Screencap if I'm off on the Mac, I'll fix it as soon as I can.)

Hello, I'm fairly new to web design. I'm currently in the process of building my promotional website. I was just wondering...Would it be better for me to building separate pages for my portfolio items and use the swap image behavior, or create Iframes? Any pointers? Thank you!

a poll. help?
Date: 07/27/07
Keywords: java, web
i'm redesigning my portfolio site -- this includes print media, photography (scans of silver prints), web design, and some multimedia fun stuffs. i'm so tired of the same old notion of "click to see my work" with whatever obvious thumbnail navigation or cute artsy boxes or javascript pop-ups. i'm kinda stuck with the obvious navigation and having to click on things..
what are your likes/dislikes about others' portfolio sites? what about scrolling? an artist statement? too much/too little work? formal vs informal navigation?
(this is a poll, so duplicate suggestions are very welcome)
here's some layouts i like:
