Galleries
Date: 02/10/07
Keywords: programming
Just wondering if anyone happens to run an image gallery on their site (or any site) and if so would they be able to recommend a new program for that sort of thing. I already have two running with Minigal but with the two projects I have lined up, I just wanted to know if there are any other freeware programs out there, especially since in one case it doesn't quite fit my needs. Any links would be great.
Basically I'd like to save time on having to manually program thumbnails to images that have to come up in a pop-up window. For the other project the person does not want to be bogged down with programming so the less he has to do, the better (though I'd be the one setting it up for him).

Making .CUR files?
Date: 02/08/07
Keywords: software, web
I'm a bit flumoxed...
I don't really have much experience dealing with Web image-file formats outside of the .jpeg, .gif and .png arena, and have been searching with no resolution for a solution that would allow me to export, or draw a .cur file (custom cursor/pointer).
I found this piece of Windows software, which might be ok (I was highly turned off by the trial software), but highly prefer a PhotoShop or ImageReady plugin or even GIMP.
Any recommendations? Thanks much!

needed: flash aficionado with time on their hands
Date: 02/07/07
Keywords: web
A fellow web-designer & collaborator friend of mine just asked me for some RUSH Flash help on a project he's working on. He's a hardcore standards-coder... doesn't really specialize in Flash. I, however, don't know enough to help him out in time--my skills are rusty & I'm not confident enough in them. So, I thought I'd pass this subcontracting opportunity on to you deserving and dedicated folk (I've admired many folks' technical problem-solving abilities here...).
Here's the deal: the website is for a band. It's pretty simple -- a flash-only set of 6 or 7 animated buttons that loads into an iframe, and 3 audio files that play continuously with stop/pause/play buttons. Pays $400, and we need it by 2/13. If you're curious/need more details, I have a Photoshop comp so you can get a good idea if it'd be worth your time & do-able. E-mail me at jmathewes [at] gmail [dot] com, please, by the end of the day. We need someone on this project right away. No nonsense... we'll sign papers, and you deliver.

shopping cart systems?
Date: 02/06/07
Keywords: php, asp, shopping
I usually design small shopping carts with CoolCart and make the buttons and stuff myself, but I have a client that may change things a lot once the site goes live.
I'd say 50 - 75 items max over 5 or 6 catagories. The client should be able to login to a admin screen, create the information or change the info about a product, upload a thumbnail and post the price.
Running ASP in the design at the moment but open to PHP.
Anyone have a suggestion for something that can be purchased or is 3rd party but is seamless with the site that is being designed?

Stop Loading Page
Date: 02/06/07
Keywords: web
I need to access a form in an 8MB++ webpage regularly, the form is located in the first 30Kb of the webpage.
What I want to ask is, is there a plugin for Firefox where I can stop the page from loading completely after 40Kb was downloaded? Or bookmarklet or whatever. (I'm desperate!)
Notes:
* I cannot change the said webpage
* The programmer won't change the webpage, even though we already ask like 3 years ago.
Thanks.

Call for Papers
Web 2.0 and the Semantic Web: Hindrance or Opportunity?
The World Wide Web (Web) is in transition; a fundamental evolution of the model which underpins the traditional Web. This new Web, Web (2.0), is a mesh of enhanced semantics, push application widgets, and embedded scripting languages and was developed to pursue the promise of enhanced interactivity. The possible benefits of the Web 2.0 is great but it seems that without timely and prompt action disabled users will be barred from these benefits. Indeed, using sites which such as: Flicker, YouTube, MySpace, Google Maps, and Google Portal will rapidly become `off-limits' to disabled users. Semantic Web technologies have already shown themselves to be useful in addressing some issues of Web Accessibility. However, this new technology has not yet started to make its way into mainstream applications. Without change, will the benefits of the Semantic Web be lost? Will the promising enhanced interactivity of Web 2.0 technologies become increasingly inaccessible to disabled users? We pose the question: Web 2.0 and the Semantic Web: Hindrance or Opportunity?
In this case topics of interests include (but are not limited to):
- Advances in Web 2.0 and Semantic Web technologies;
- Tools and technologies based on Web 2.0 and Semantic Web to support Web accessibility;
- Tools and technologies to make Web 2.0 and Semantic Web applications and systems accessible;
- Design and best practice to support Web accessibility;
- Technological advances to support Web accessibility;
- End user tools;
- Accessibility guidelines, best practice, evaluation techniques, and tools;
- Psychology of end user experiences and scenarios;
- Innovative techniques to support accessibility;
- Universally accessible graphical design approaches;
- Design Perspectives;
- Adapting existing web content;
- Accessible graphic formats and tools for their creation.

A plea, a proposition
Date: 02/05/07
Keywords: php, css, html, hosting
I need help. A lot of help.
I have been designing (using the term very loosely) for nearly a decade now but it seems that I can't wrap my head around more than just basic HTML and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in tutoring and helping me learn effective CSS and PHP (I've been using CSS for years but mostly just eyeballing things, copying and pasting, trial and error; a lot of my code is messy, redundant, or useless and I can't seem to get the hang of styling outside of iframes). I know there are many, many layout journals and sites but not many of them offer personal help. In return I can offer you hosting on an amazing server, or I could even pay you if we can't work anything else out. I have a lot of ideas for designs and sites, I just can't seem to get them into code.

arghhhh

I'm going nuts right now. I'm working on this mockup (which is far from done), but my biggest problem right now is the gaps between the three divs making up the content table. I couldn't just put the two top images into the content div because the area around the rounded corners is transparent so the background shows through. I slapped the content div into a container, then topped and bottomed it with divs containing the rounded corners as backgrounds, but there's big gaps.
Does anyone have any insight? Is there an easier way to do this? I can't just save the rounded corners without the transparency because then they won't match the background.

Was wondering if any of you working in the corporate world have experience in working with or hiring consultants that specialize in website marketing, specifically Search Engine Optimization. My company is currently in the market for someone to help us out in this area, and I wanted to know if anyone here had any leads.
Huge thanks in advance!

New website launched; NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE
Date: 02/01/07
Keywords: browser, css, html, web
Just a quick update here.
I just re-launched Diana and My Wedding Announcement webpage, and I am having difficulties perfecting the CSS and HTML and how the page is viewed in different browsers. IE7 works great, Firefox 2 does NOT understand half the crap happenning and I have yet to try Opera or any other alternative browser.
Please take a few minutes to click around on the site, if you have access to different browsers, use them all and then comment here with any formatting issues.
Also, if anyone out there knows ANYTHING about CSS or HTML formatting for universal viewing, please, PLEASE contact me and give me hand. I would really appreciate it.

Portfolio website for a web design novice
Date: 01/31/07
Keywords: web
I'm building a portfolio site of my print design work. My goal is a very simple, clean homepage - essentially one column on the left with a list of my work. When someone clicks on one of the items, say "Poster design for art show"...an image of the poster design will pop up. When a different item is clicked, the new image pops up where the poster image used to be.
With some googling, I learned how to set "Show-Hide Layers" in the Behaviors panel, and it works. The problem is that I have about thirty items in my portfolio (each image is on a separate layer), and it's insanely tedious to go through and click "hide" on 29 other layers. It's easy to make mistakes, and I already dread updating. Also, I'm running into a problem where some layers don't get hidden if they're clicked in a certain order, and all sorts of weird quirks.
There must be an easier way to accomplish the click-and-show-image-in-one-spot goal...after all, tons of websites use this interface. I want to learn how to do this the RIGHT way and have a perfectly functioning page and clean code!
Any helpful advice or links to tutorials?

I need your help...
Date: 01/30/07
Keywords: cms, web
... I have been given the task of working on a site which is a mess of frames, etc. I don't think they care how I redo it as long as the top and bottom stay static. This leads me to a question. Is there a way that I could make the content in between scroll without using frames?
Here's the site: http://www.tateresearch.com
Whatever top menu bar I eventually create and whatever bottom menu bar I create, they must stay static with the centre content scrolling.
Also, what would be a good CMS to use so they could do there own website updates without touching any of the layout?
