Server Host Problems
Date: 03/28/06
Keywords: linux
I've recently had some problems with the server company Memset which means I am now looking for alternative server hosts. At the moment, I am paying about £30 for the following miniserver:
Celeron 1.0 GHz Processor
128MB Ram
10GB space
Unmetered Bandwidth
2 Ip addresses
Full root access (linux server - fedora core 3)
Full cPanel
If anyone has any links or knows of any companies that are similar (or better) to this, then please comment the details here - I'm not so fussed about having 2 ip addresses but I definitely need to have a full cPanel installed already!
Cheers in advance!

Restricting Access by Banning IP Addresses?
Date: 03/28/06
Keywords: php, html
I have some server space on a shared server running PHP on a Unix server.
I can set up password-protected folders using the usual .htaccess files. I can also ban by IP address from within phpBB and vBulletin so that accessing the message boards is prohibited.
But what of blogs and other HTML pages on the site?
I'd like to be able to have open, unrestricted access for everyone apart from those using a specific set and range of IP addresses. Is there some way of accomplishing this without requiring everyone else to somehow authenticate themselves?

Site Design Pricing for Friends (or Family)
Date: 03/28/06
Keywords: web
I've read previous discussions here about web design pricing, but I don't recall specific details. I have a kind of touchy situation here and thought I'd throw it up for discussion.
I'm doing a site for an old friend. He owns a photo lab and also shoots weddings and events. Phase one of the site will be around 18 pages, plus two or three galleries. The focus will be on the lab services with an improved section for his photography work. I want to be fair and generous, but I also don't want to under bid based on the time I have to spend on it.
My initial estimate was around $600, with $300 to be paid as a deposit and $300 due upon completion. I'm already doing a customer analysis, site map and estimate for free.
So the questions are:
How much would you charge a client for a site this size? (18 pages, 2 galleries, other issues yet to be determined.)
How can I balance giving him the "friends and family" discount without a.) Under billing for my time or b.)Offending him by overcharging?
How much of a discount do you give to friends and family?

redirecting a missing file without using .htaccess
Date: 03/27/06
Keywords: php, xml, web
So for the website I work on, a new blog is up that replaces the old one. Some outside-my-control websites previously referenced the atom.xml file on the old website, but since the address for the new atom.xml is totally different, i want all the people trying to reference the old xml file to be redirected to the new one instead. the only major problem is that because i'm using Y!SB (ps: boo), i can't use any .htaccess files.
when i wanted to redirect something before, i would use some php (http://mag1.olivesoftware.com/ActiveMagazine/welcome/plm/plenty.asp");?>), but since i'm now trying to redirect an xml file and not a php one, i sadly can't do that.
so how do i redirect something while being unable to use .htaccess?

Trade show ideas?
Date: 03/27/06
Keywords: web
I'm going to be having a booth at a Chamber B2B expo later this week and it's important that I make a good impression. Here's what I already have:
* have booth space already, a 42" plasma TV with Flash presentation that will run to catch the eye as people walk by
* have tumblers and pens and t-shirts and bags
* have a banner 3' x 5' with company name and colorful (yet muted) background
What I need to figure out is how to make things a little more interactive and cause a buzz. Having a large screen with a presentation will get the eye-catching factor but what will get them to come closer and stay?
I have 25 travel tumblers and 50 t-shirts and don't want to just hand them out. Thoughts on how to do some sort of game to get them to play to "earn" their prize while getting their contact info?
The main concern is that I moved here 5 months ago but have had business for 3 years and have been designing web sites since 1994. There's 2 major web design companies here that everyone knows of, but I want to be thought of being on their level and make people realize that there is a choice in town. Unlike the other companies, I just stick to web design, development and marketing. The others also dabble in video production, audio production, cd roms, etc.
Any ideas or suggestions on things to do would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Chris

Possible Design

Greets all, looking for some crit and comments please. The design is pretty weird I think, but I think it needs something more. I find it very boring actually, so looking for options if possible.
Notes: Still fixing IE 5.5 breaks and the bottom left corner aligns with content.

CSS Problem

xposted
Maybe someone here can help me, I've posted this on the phpbb forums and nobody can figure it out. It's actually a problem with the CSS, not phpbb. I have a gen class in the css that is overriding another class for my navigation. The navigation is on a black background and the gen class is set to have black links and a dark orange hover. So my navigation links aren't showing up. The code for the navigation points to the .nav class. You can view my post at the phpbb forums here:
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=2052634#2053197
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem??
Thanks!

stupid question -- dns?
Date: 03/25/06
Keywords: html, hosting
Please bear with me -- really, I should know how to do this.
I have a hosting account, but my domains are registered elsewhere. I'm hosting three different domains on the hosting account, which works well in that I get a zillion email addresses and can have different addresses for each domain. However, the way it's set up in the hosting is so when you type in any of the three domains, you get the same page. So, if I want three different "sites" I have to either use a "choose your destination" type thing, or make a url like www.domain1.com/page.html, which doesn't really work if the user doesn't put in the page. So I know that I have other options, but I'm not sure what they are. Am I missing a step? Is this a DNS issue? My hosting has a "custom dns record" area, but I'm not sure how to use it, or if it even matters. I don't want to mask my domains, and I can't anyway because my registrar (GoDaddy) won't let me since they are actually with the hosting account.
Thanks!

hi again everyone. first, i would like to thank those who replied to my question about hosting - i think i might try out dreamhost since it seems to fit my needs most and was recommended by a few of you.
here is my most pressing question: i want to be able to right click an image and "add image to iphoto library" in firefox like i can in safari on mac osx tiger. IS THERE A WAY?? i've searched and asked and googled and have no answer.
and one more: does anyone know a way to get flash movies to play smoother on macs? i didn't even realize there was such a performance difference between mac and pc, but i am learning the hard way now. again, i've googled and searched macromedia but nothing.
thank you for your endless patience and kick-assery.

Help me pick a monitor
Date: 03/21/06
Keywords: web
This is only indirectly related to Web Design, but I am going to purchase an LCD monitor very soon, and I was wondering what size I should get. I am on a budget guys. I use my computer primarily for designing/developing web pages, using music apps like Ableton: Live and ACID Pro. Should I get a 17" or a 19" ? Though the 19" would be bigger, I noticed that both sizes tend to have the same native resolution, so what is the point in getting the 19" ? Am I wrong?

AUGH javascript horror!
Date: 03/20/06
Keywords: css, java
Hai guys...
I'm trying to put together a portfolio for a Photoshop class I'm in. I'm just using a simple JavaScript to show/hide the images in the portfolio, and CSS for all the placement.
Here's the page so far:
https://oncourse.iu.edu/access/content/user/cstrodtb/n180/index.htm
The CSS is broken in IE, which isn't as much of a problem as the javascript not working at all. It worked for a short while, and now it's completely broken! All the code is in that file, just view the source of the page.
Thanks in advance!

web hosting

Keywords: web, hosting, yahoo
hey all
quick question - who do you use for web hosting? i'm looking for recommendations for small business/personal site hosting, like for bands and other small clients who don't require a ton of bandwidth or even much storage. i've used fatcow, but didn't have to maintain the site so i don't know how great they turned out to be. i currently host my own site with yahoo small business, which is like 11.95 a month for 5 gigs of storage and 200 gigs of bandwidth. they support scripting languages and have integrated wordpress and movable type which is pretty sweet, but i'm wondering if i can do better.
thanks!

FTP hosting
Date: 03/17/06
Keywords: web, hosting, yahoo
Hope this is within the realms of this community.
I do a ton of web design work with my brother's company. This involves me either driving there to pick up the files on CD, which is kind of a pain in the fanny sometimes. I don't mind getting out of the house, but it does add wear and tear to my vehicle when I am only there for a few minutes.
He has other uses for FTP hosting as well for printers, clients and the like.
I would go in with him on the hosting costs so it would have to be pretty inexpensive, reliable and easy enough for him to understand.
Anyone have any hosts you prefer? We don't need any web hosting, this would be strictly file storage.
I would go ahead and host that here on another machine but then I would require to purchase IP addresses and with set-up fees that seems silly since I will be moving from my currently location in June. Not very cost effective at the moment.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
EDIT: In doing some Googling (actually found it through Yahoo though) I was wondering if anyone has used http://www.streamload.com They do have a free based file hosting account and I will try that but it's always nice to be able to have opinions on long or longer-than short term use, if you will.

Suckerfish menu help

Alrighty, so I'm using this Suckerfish menu, and I've hit a sort of snag.
What I want to do is have the sub-menu items sit next to each other. On IE, this occurs, but on Firefox, they sit below each other.
IE:
FF:
Can anyone tell me what I can do to get the FF menu to display like the IE menu?
If it helps, here's the link to my CSS, and the link to the site.

Editing mp3's

help?
I have a client who's a musician and he wants to put clips of his music on his website. I've got copies of the songs and as far as I can tell they're normal mp3's but any kind of software I've tried downloading to edit these suckers keeps telling me they're not valid mpeg files.
Does anybody have any suggestions on what to try with these things?
