1. Content Management System

    Date: 02/08/06     Keywords: no keywords

I'm looking for a good content management system for easy updates. Several years ago I tried out cutenews, and while it was ok there really wasn't a lot I could do with it as far as design. Was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions for some good programs? Just looking for something that's versatile as far as design and content, and easy to use on the backend for various users. Thanks!!

  3. DOCTYPE?

    Date: 02/08/06     Keywords: no keywords

Hey all, I was wondering how I know which DOCTYPE to use? I have read a good bit on it, but havent managed to find a straight answer or one that makes sense. If someone could break it down or link me, that'd be great. Thanks all.

  4. rss and css and oh my

Date: 02/08/06     Keywords: rss, css, java

how can i apply stylesheets to outside rss feeds?

i'm using this to make the javascript needed to show an rss feed (... is that the best way? i'm oblivious) and because my body type is initially set to 62.8% (so i don't tear my hair out when trying to use EMs for font sizes) stuff shows up dinky. what I'm hoping is to set the output from the rss feeds with the same type I generally use for my bodytext (it also wouldn't hurt to remove those damn bullets that show up, too).

so how do I apply css to an rss feed? i want the font bigger and the bullets gone. that possible?

  5. drop-down menus and CSS

Date: 02/07/06     Keywords: php, css, web

Hey everyone, thanks for the many comments on how you learned CSS. There seem to be a lot of ways to position images and other web items on a page using CSS code, so I tried understanding how some pages have coded drop-down menus that appear over an image. However, I see tables in a few of these... any suggestions on how to use a PHP include for script of a drop-down menu? Can I just position the PHP include file using the same placing techniques as I would for placing the image? Just that bit would be great help, before I start going about it all wrong! Thanks again.

  6. css implementation

    Date: 02/06/06     Keywords: css, web

How did you all learn CSS and how to implement it? What did you find was the best method: book purchase and following through exercises, examining webpage code, etc. I have a small CSS reference book, but I don't see much full code, just definitions for what each bit does. I'm sure everyone's learning curve is different, but is it a hell of a time figuring it out? Thanks!

  7. word to html

    Date: 02/03/06     Keywords: css, html

What's the best way to translate 2,000 pages of formatted text from a Word document into html so that the formatted text stays the same?

I don't want to do it by hand! Is there a way to link up the style sheet in word to a CSS page in Dreamweaver?

  8. Search Engine Stuff

    Date: 02/01/06     Keywords: html, web

I have questions about search engine optimization. Well I have one question actually. How do I do it? The firm for which I worked before I went out on my own took care of all that with a web marketing director. On occasion I needed to put certain words or phrases in certain places, above photos toward the bottom of the page and so on, but I never learned what sort of reasoning was behind it. I don’t even know how to submit to search engines. I know I need meta tags and that they get pasted in the header html somewhere, but what goes into the meta tags? Help!

  9. going insane...not unusual for me...but definately fusterating

    Date: 01/31/06     Keywords: xml, asp

    Okay, so question:

Does anyone know offhand of any good tutorials on configuring a search through an XML in FLASH where you expect to get multiple results from one search? (example- multiple records with the same status). I'm finding a ton on searching for exact records, but they all expect only one result back and it's driving me nuts. I've spent waaaay to much time on this stupid little thing, I'm SO not good enough with actionscript to this. I've tried lots of the tutorials on xml sites that work with flash, tried messing around with the actionscript myself, done tutorials in the books, no luck. HUGe waste of time. right now I've got my xml configured, it's all hooked up, and it even shows the first record, and I figured out how to get it to work for a random numbered record even!!! (before it was only showing the LAST record of the loop. i think it might have something to do with that whole "i" variable thingie-yeah, I know, soooo technical)Now if I can only get the stupid thing to get the REST of the records... I'm so getting an actionscript for dummies book. something with visible illustrations and DETAILED descriptions of variables. All the ones out there are WAY over my poor beginners head-i feel like I'm grasping it, and then suddenly -- WHOOPS! look-we added a variable and we're NOT telling you(the reader) why *bangheadondesk*.

    *sigh*

i swear I'm not usually this stupid when it comes to this stuff.

(and before I get any of those dont.use.flash messages- it's an internal demonstration of a program replicated in flash-so not flashy blinki-ness and flash + xml was requested of me...no choice really ARG-)

  11. a couple of layout bugs/questions?

    Date: 01/30/06     Keywords: seo

hi folks, i have a couple problems that i'm trying to fix.

    i'm working on a new layout and almost have it looking perfect across all browswers, however i have a few problems;

    • the logo in the top right corner doesn't sit flush with the top in FF

    • is there any way to get bulletpoints to change bgcolour in IE, i was told to try onmouseover="this.bg='#f00000'" but i've had no joy with that.

    • also i read once that i could transform text, depending on letter position, do you have any idea how i would go about making the first and last letter of a 'blockquote' twice the size?

erm, that's about it, i think. you can check it out here: http://creed-online.net/test/ it might require a hard refresh.

Also, is there a way to have the white background completely extend to the bottom of the screen? It's currently fine for the first screen but then it gets wonky. Or maybe there's a better way to set up the divs, say maybe one container div with a white background and put the columns inside that? Would that be better?

  13. CSS Question

    Date: 01/28/06     Keywords: css

Hello all, I have been reading thru forums and such, trying to figure out what's going on, but is it possible to have a text size based on the size of the box it's in? As of now I have a fully percentage-based CSS layout and whenever I add text, it extends beyond the box. I hope this is enough info, if not holler. Thanks all.

  14. can't find tutorials because i don't know the terminology (again!)

    Date: 01/27/06     Keywords: php, css

so i have a two column css layout. on the left column will be a list of names. when the name is clicked, i want some information about that person to show up in the right column. if someone else is clicked, i want that to go poof and the new name's profile info stuff to go in.

i thought this was a case of display: none and display: block, but i'm not finding anything with the answer i'm looking for. the best i found was this (link), but it seems that it still isn't giving me the answers i want.

so i'm looking for any tutorials (or hell, answers, but i don't mind looking this stuff up myself) that let me accomplish the following:

    1) i have a list in div 1, each item being a hyperlink that targets dive 2
    2) when i click the hyperlinks in div 1, the old thing hides itself while the new one reveals itself in div 2

i know iframes can do this, but i'm looking for a more css/php based answer, because i want to keep things up to current standards.

is this possible or am i looking for something that can't be?

  16. more PHP, CSS...

    Date: 01/26/06     Keywords: php, html

Hey guys, I am a little frustrated... I was doing updates on this page, and the way it's set up is all PHP pages with a style sheet and also a navigation PHP file... so the menu is a separate file, and THEN that navigation file is affected by the style.php so... it's a few files to modify the navigation in order to affect all the pages.

First, why use PHP? Why not HTML? Then, why not just make a template in Dreamweaver? So then whatever changes are made to the template affect all the pages.

I ask this last question because I needed to adjust the table where the navigation.php was linked in order to fit it's new large size. But... I had to change each page! He coded it all complicated with sheets and PHP, and then I had to manually change each page. Can anyone explain this? I just need to understand why that method is better...Thanks! [x-posted]

  17. flash scrolling banners

    Date: 01/26/06     Keywords: no keywords

Can anyone point me at a tutorial (or explain simply) how to loop a scrolling banner of images in Flash? And when I say loop, I mean that it wraps around to the beginning frame again seamlessly, not just flips back to beginning of the animation.

    Hmmm? Anyone? Bueller??

  19. Incorporating a NOSCRIPT declaration where the script is in the header

    Date: 01/25/06     Keywords: browser, java

I'm putting together a site with a style switcher based upon the A List Apart one.

In the head section, I have this:

Then in the body I have the links:
    normal ||
    high contrast ||
    high visibility

This work really nicely. Unless the browser has Javascript disabled. No real problem there, but when I check for AAA or 508 compliance, I'm told:
"Rule: 6.3.4 - When SCRIPT Elements are used, the NOSCRIPT element is required in the document.
Warning - SCRIPT Element(s) are found in document and the NOSCRIPT element is not."

Ideally, I'd like to add the noscript element in place of or underneath the stylesheet switcher, but I can't work out how to accomplish this - I'm having a "Senior Moment"...

    Any ideas?

  20. Help!!!

    Date: 01/25/06     Keywords: html, web

This is giving me one big headache.

    See this: http://www.willow.hackrifice.com/web/respicker.html

The link which is supposed to be over the text "800x600" on that image, is appearing below the image. I have tried moving it with negative margins, but no matter what margin value I enter.. it won't budge at all. Now this link is supposed to be within the element of the image, so why is it appearing below that element, and is unbudgeable? Even stranger, if I make the image the background image of its element rather than placing the image, the link doesn't show up at all! Can anybody see what I am doing wrong by having a look at my code? I'm sure it's probably really obvious, but I've been trying to fix it for almost an hour and it's getting irritating!
