video editing

i recently got a digital camera that takes video in .mov format. i have been using tmpgenc to convert into mpeg and do a little bit of editing so i can upload the videos on youtube. but the file sizes end up being really big and the quality isn't really that good. i know i am bound by the limitations of my camera and also of youtube, but i was wondering if there was any good freeware or opensource video optimizing software out there that i could be using. thanks a lot for your help!
