Sound File Lost

I just went to listen to something on my computer and no sound came out of it. I made sure everything was plugged in and it was.. When I unplugged a speaker wire, I head some crackling in my speakers, so I am assuming that the speakers work fine.

Last night, I was going through and deleting files that I THOUGHT were not important. Is there a file that is essential in for playing sounds? Most of the things I deleted were .txt files. I did delete something that said that if I deleted it certain things wouldn't work properly. ANY ADVICE?
