Problems with embedded streaming files. Firefox 1.0.1; WMP9/10; .WMV

Hello all, new to this community, and in need of clarification and help.

Recently, due to possible maliciously encoded .wmv files, or possible blotched codec installs, My beloved WMP decided to call it quits, floating belly up whenever I try to play a .wmv file.

No worries, found work arounds using Winamp and VLC in regards to my local files.

My problem is, that whenever I try to access a page containing imbedded .wmv files, Firefox uses the crippled WMP, which causes the it (the embedded file) to crash, which causes Firefox to crash.

My question is, are there any work around in Firefox, whether to disable embedded media all together, or to switch the programs used by Firefox to something less volatile?

I was snoopping around Firefox's "about:config" and came along this particular line:

plugin.scan.WindowsMediaPlayer Status="Default" Type="String" Value="7.0". I'm wondering if this, or anything related, might be a way to circumvent my problems.

I want to consider myself a semi Advance user, but as you people may see, I don't know enough to help my own hide.

    Thanks in advance.
