Nero Woes

I have a tech support request.
I purchased an LG DVD burner (the "super multi" drive, unsure of model number) about a year ago and haven't tried to burn a data DVD until recently.  CD burning works just fine, but every time I've tried to burn a simple data disc of pictures (two-ish gigs in total), I get a frisbee.
I have the OEM version of Nero that doesn't have a specific data DVD option.  I can create a data disc and it will prompt me to burn to DVD instead of CD since the amount of data exceeds 700MB.  I've got the software set to auto-detect both disc speed and drive speed, to do a simulation before burn, and to verify all data after burning is complete.  The greatest success I've had was getting all the pictures supposedly burned to the disc only to find out that each file was a band about 45 pixels tall of actual image at the top of the file and a blank grey field below that.  Obviously, the whole file isn't being written to the disc but Nero thinks that it is.

My question is this:  Is this a fault in the freebie version of Nero that came with my burner, or a fault in the burner itself?  I've heard lots of good things about this drive and it came highly reccommended when I bought it, but illness prevented me from testing it out until recently and I hope I haven't been sitting on a lemon this whole time.
