Geek Gamer Question

I need to purchase (note the word need) a new Nintendo DS Lite for my daughter
as her top screen is cracked. I have the option to buy it here at home, or
I could order it from the states and pick it up when I'm visiting my folks just
because the exchange rate is so wonky and it is about half the price.
The question _is_, can you use a plug adaptor on Nintendo consoles like you do
mobile phones, laptops,PDAs etc. and they charge properly? I can charge my mobile
and Palm in the US by just using a plug adaptor. I have a voltage convertor that
weighs a ton but its more trouble bringing it back here than paying extra for
    a Nintendo in GBP.
I'm cross posting this to Brit-Americans and Live Journal UK just in case.
I never did get a sarisfactory answer from the heads at Nintendo.
