Date: 01/17/06 (Computer Geeks) Keywords: web It's time for me to reinstall XP. However, while Windows has no problem reading CDs, my BIOS (PhoenixBIOS 4.0 release 6.0.5) doesn't recognise the newer CD-ROM drive I've installed. Afer hours and hours of cross referencing and Googling, I found THIS PAGE at the HP site (why it was so buried and difficult to track down, I don't understand), which lists the XE783 as having the MEW-AM mother board, and has a BIOS update. This seems to be a common problem, as I'd come across a number of posts in various message boards looking for the elusive CUW-AM BIOS update. Odd. The BIOS has been successfully updated, but the computer refuses to boot from CD. I've put the CD drive at the top of the boot list in the BIOS, and still, nothing. What's odd is that the CD drive light blinks when the computer starts up. The device manager recognizes the CD drive, and even after reinstalling it through the device manager, still the drive refuses to boot. Perhaps the Phoenix BIOS has some sort of guard against new hardware? Source: http://community.livejournal.com/computergeeks/862093.html
