Upgrading a notebook

I've been putting off upgrading my laptop because I was planning on building a new desktop when Vista came out. Since that is looking less and less likely to happen anytime soon, I'm going to upgrade. Currently I'm running a stock Toshiba P25-S507 with 512 mb (2 x 256) of RAM, a P4 running at 2.8 ghz and Windows XP Pro. I play a few computer games and work a bit with Photoshop. Seeing as I'm now on a budget, what would you do if you were in my shoes? Does the higher priced RAM make that big a difference? Is installing a hard drive with a higher RPM an effective way to increase performance and is it worth the cost?
