Date: 09/25/05
Keywords: google
I am on my mothers computer trying to install Beyond planet earth and after i run the setup to install it. It comes back and said the CVID driver is not installed, please run earthsetup.exe I do, and i keep getting the same thing. I looked on google for the solution and i found one, but when i go to change the earth.ini file it keeps telling me there is not enough space on her computer. We got rid of stuff like limewire and other progs she didn't use. But i still can not get it to download. What else can i do? It does work on my computer, but i can't get it on this one...
Thanks

Help!
Date: 09/24/05
Keywords: no keywords
i posted last month with problems, and i got some helpful advice, unfortunately nothing has really worked. here's the deal:
i built a computer:
Abit KV7 mobo
Athlon XP 3000+ w/heatsink/fan combo
(1 chip) 512MB PC3200 RAM
GeForce FX5500 256MB Video Card
Seagate 250gig HD (primary)
Maxtor 30gig HD (secondary)
Memorex 52X CD-RW
1) build # 1 - at first it turned on for half a second then autoshutdown along with the mobo error beep meaning "damaged/unseated/overheating CPU". turned out the heatsink was turned round, fixed that, but it wouldn't run the CPU at full speed. flashed the BIOS, reset the CMOS, but that didn't fix the problem, but the computer would boot and run. this was the only time i had a functioning computer, but it was running at 1.3ghz not 2.16ghz.
2) build #2 - replaced the mobo. this time no matter what it would autoshutdown with the same mobo error beep as before. everything was installed correctly and the fan was working correctly. never got it to boot at all.
3) build #3 - replaced the CPU. same as before. only turns on for half a second, then gives the mobo error.
anyone have any ideas?
x-posted a lot.

Help!
Date: 09/24/05
Keywords: no keywords
I am in need of some serious help.
When my computer boots up it puts on "The Prevost Family" for a user.
It should boot up to "Monique". That is where everyone in my family's stuff is. When I try to switch it only has the family as a user.
Currently I have lost all my favorites (bookmarks), all my music, my writing, and all kinds of stuff unless we can fix this. My dad has lost work and school stuff.
If anyone can help, please let me know. I want my stuff back.
Thank you to anyone in advance who helps me.

HELP
Date: 09/23/05
Keywords: no keywords
I am definently in need of some serious guidance. A few hours ago(it's now 4:12 in the A.M.) I awoke to find my PC(presario laptop) black screened with a little blinking cursor in the upper left corner. An hour or so before that the pc was working perfectly. So, I restart the machine and now the machine won't even boot into windows. It won't even get past the opening "compaq" screen. Everytime I restart it seems the condition of the HD worsens. I went into BIOS and ran the HD check and it passed. I then booted from the windows cd and went into the recovercy console. I ran dskchk and it essentialy told me that there are several unrepairable problems in my HD. So, I've come to the conclusion that my best bet is a reformat. However, before I do that I REALLY need to get a bunch of things off of the hard drive. This is prooving especially difficult considering the fact that I can't boot into windows AT ALL. I have another brand new powerbook G4 that I was required to purchase for school. With that being said, I was wondering if there is ANY way that I can retrieve my files using my MAC or any other way? I'm sorry if this sounds frantic but, I'm just slightly concerned and sleep deprived. Any and all advice and help is truly apreciated.
thanks in advance

DSL modem help
Date: 09/23/05
Keywords: no keywords
Does anyone know if it is possible to connect to Verizon DSL if you have two seperate DSL modems and one account? I have two computers connected to a router now but needless to say, I have had nothing but problems. So I was wondering if Verizon allows multiple connections to the same account from seperate modems on the same phone line. I know I could call Verizon directly and spend hours on hold just to get some salesman who wants to network my house "for a nominal fee" but I was hoping that maybe one of you knows off hand.

installing a netgear wgr614 v4 router to a secondary computer
Date: 09/22/05
Keywords: software, web
my roommate has a 54 Mbps NETGEAR WGR614 v4 wireless router but has lost the installation cd, the router is installed and working on her computer from when she first got the thing but we have no idea how to install the plug-in usb part on my computer without any installation software.
i downloaded the firmware offered on the net gear website but that didn't help. it downloads as a zip file and when uncompressed it's an adobe file and an IMG file which can't be opened (even by img file opener).
it says new hardware found when we insert the usb wireless thing and tries to search for "cohiba 3887 rev0"
both computers are running on Windows XP and we are trying to set up a home (wireless) network. also we have DSL.
help, i've no idea what to do and am so frustrated :(

Hard disk life expectancy?
Date: 09/21/05
Keywords: no keywords
What's the average life expectancy of a good hard disk?
I was told recently it was 3-5 years for average-to-heavy use, but many years ago I was told a good hard disk should last at least 5 years, if not longer.
So which is correct, or are both statements wrong?

The Verdict: Antec NeoPower 480
Date: 09/20/05
Keywords: no keywords
I bought and installed (all by myself) the Antec NeoPower 480 watt power supply for $129 after taxes.
It may only have 18Amps going across the +12V line, but after explaining my problems to the guy at Intrex, he suggested this one.
The cable management system is excellent. You only install the cables you need, and they give you plenty of cables in the box.
The installation was very simple. Much more so than I thought it would be.
Thanks for everyone who helped me make the decision!

Power Supply - Part 2
Date: 09/20/05
Keywords: html
Thanks for everyone's response yesterday about replacing that power supply. After some searching, I found that I have this power supply.
http://www.xoxide.com/35tuposu.html
It's 350 watts.
Just from looking at this page I would assume that I need to buy another ATX-Form power supply.
I think I am going to look for a 500W power supply so that my NVIDIA GE Force 6600 GT card will have enough juice.
Is this a good plan, or should I try another wattage?

Windows Help

Keywords: linux
Ok, so I have a huge problem. I have a dual boot system running Suse&Windows XP. I can boot to the boot loader but after that nothing happens. If I try to boot to my Linux partition I just get a blank screen, if I boot to the Windows partition I get the following message; "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:system32\DRIVERS\pci.sys". It gives me the option to do a rescue w/ the windows cd but when I try it just won't boot. I really need the files off the computer, if someone can help I will be very greatful.
Thanks,
Skrillz

OK
now last week i was going around to yardsales
that people were having and i found some guy selling computer parts
so i asked how much
turns out he was selling a whole computer
1.6 Ghz
60G HD
idk RAM
and also threw in some
unknown cards too (sound, modem, and something i cant figure out)
long story short (too late)
the guy said the only thing wrong was that he fried the BIOS
by having it in the HOME position instead of the WORK? position
but he was willing to give it to me for 25 bucks so i bought it
i figured the worst that can happen is i blew 25 bucks
on what would eventually function as a table
but i still wanna see if i can get it to work
so he's the nOObness
1.where can i get a BIOS chip?
(i imagine you cant just go out ad buy
one you have to order)
2.is ANY BIOS chip ok?
3.how do i install it?
4.then what?
id like to have this computer
as a backup because i also have a nice
9200 ATI card and another 60G HD i found
that id like to throw in it
and i was thinking on having on HD be WIN98
(for older games)
and one be LINUX
can someone please help me
on this because i know your all guru's
it would be much appreciated and
ill buy you a soda or something (haha)
thanks in advance!!

Dells are fun

I'm fixing a dell for a friend, and after the initial XP install the computer hangs after a few minutes. I went to run windows update, and it stalled while downloading, and I couldn't move the window, right click, or run anything. This has happened every time. Would the hard drive be to blame? (It's an 80G Seagate)

Fair price for second hand hardware
Date: 09/18/05
Keywords: google, ebay
Hi, I've been looking to sell my Samsung SyncMaster 700p Plus. I've googled around a bit and only found a few prices (presumably second or nth hand) that don't seem to match up. I found prices ranging from a few dollars (ebay) up through around 300 or 400 then right up to 800 (these are USD figure, I'm actually Australian. I can use currency conversion, though - go me!). It doesn't seem to be listed on the Samsung site, but I only checked the USA and Australian archives.
If anyone knows of a place to get a good (free) quote for old hardware, I'd love to know. If this isn't an appropriate place to ask, also let me know. Finally, if anyone is interested in buying then I'm sorry, but I've already got the buyer, I just need a good price - feel free to offer what you think you would be prepared to pay, though.
Thanks in advance

Gotta love the pain

Meet Maxtor. Wow aren't they fun? See their drives fail.
Seriously, I must have won the secret lottery. I have 2 Maxtor drives now, a 200G (obtained by a fluke) and a 60G (bought a long time ago).
I was bored so I decided to check their warranties.
The 200G expires next year, and is fully operational.
Before, I've noticed that the 60G drive, when on it's side, will make a subtle "hiss" that goes away when I tap it (didn't like that much). So it turns out, the 60G warranty expires TOMORROW (9/18/05) so I run PowerMax to see if any action is necessary. I start up the utility and ~[BEHOLD]~ this drive is failing. So I completed the online RMA form today and chose the advanced RMA (they send the "new" drive first, then you send the bad one back). However I'm concerned they'll find it odd that I return the drive on the *last* day of warranty. It's Friday, and the warranty expires Saturday, so they won't finish processing the RMA untill Monday and may try to pull a fast one. Anyways I'll piss and moan to their tech if I need to, I'm sure thing's will work out.
My uncle is so unfortunate. He's gone through SEVEN (7!) hard drives through Maxtor RMA. They even sent him a brand new Server grade 250G drive (MaxLine II) and it failed. I know his computers are to blame (cheap mb, ps, etc), but it's retarded nonetheless. Hopefully I won't be having as much fun as he is.
Anyways, I wouldn't buy a brand new Maxtor ever, and I'm just gonna try to get as much as I can out of this RMA.
Post your experiences with Maxtor! Comments welcome.
