1. Wireless Network

    Date: 03/18/05     Keywords: security

First off, happy ST. Patty's day to everyone.

I'm not having a problem, but rather asking for advice from those of you with experience with wireless home networks. I refuse to bother with wireless due to its slower speed and lack of security, so therefore I know little about it or problems I may come across.

Next week I'm suppose to setup a simple wireless network for a woman, nothing special just a laptop, desktop (both winxp) and wireless router, however she is the owner of the bar I frequent almost daily, so I need to make sure this goes as smoothly as possible, my question is, are there any snags I may run into when dealing with wireless? It's crucial I don't run into any major problems, for one, she could recommend me to alot of people which would boost my customer base considerably, and 2nd, i'm there everyday, i don't want her to think I'm an asshole, I really don't forsee any problems, but then again this will be my first time with wireless. ALso, i'm assuming there really aren't any problems when installing a wireless card on a laptop? Any input is appreciated, thanks again all.

  2. TV PC

I'm building a computer to replace a Gateway Destination I have in my basement. This, for those who don't know the system, was Gateways attempt at a media center PC with windows 95. I can not upgrade anything so I am building a whole new system. I'm looking at TV Tuner cards and at the same time replacing the PCI Video card I have. What is your opinions on the linked card and any suggestions on any other? I'm on a budget but I want a good picture.

  3. Is this in anyway shape or form possible?

Date: 03/16/05     Keywords: software, asp, linux

4 seperate boxes, 2 windows, one linux, and hopefully one solaris soon enough, each with their own monitor, controlled by a single keyboard? I'd love to figure out how to do this, if there is anyway possible. Doubt it, but never hurts to ask stupid questions right ; )

Also http://www.kellysoftware.com/ssaver/Matrix_ks.asp The Matrix Trilogy is one of my favorites, and although I never normally bother with garbage like screen savers, this one is pretty bad ass, and free, windows users only.

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: no keywords

A while back (can't find it in the archives) someone posted asking about a number of font issues, including the size of the font used in Gaim.

Here's the answer to that question, if the OP is reading, or anyone else who gets pissed off by the tiny and unchangeable font used in Gaim:

  6. Not booting

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: no keywords

I just got a new case. An Antec Super Lanboy 350 and it came with a 350w PSU. I transferred everything into the new case but when I go to boot the computer, the PSU(it has a blue light inside) flahes on and the fans twitch, but then everything shuts off. The motherboard is from an HP Pavilion a706n. It is an Asus A7V8X-LA. Any idea what could be wrong?

  7. AIM encryption.

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: security

Maybe this is worth a post, maybe it's not, i'll let those more evolved decide. Regarding AOL's new TOS with AIM stripping away all rights to privacy, users can get the following free security cert: http://www.aimencrypt.com . The site contains complete and simple setup instructions. Important Note on Page:
    Q. My friend doesn't have a security certificate are our conversations encrypted?
    A. Simply put, no. Both users must be running AIM v5.2+ and have security certificates.

I'm sure anyone with basic understanding of encryption knows this already, but I thought I'd post it just incase.

  8. Just another AIM question.

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: database, sql

    Well, no.

I'm actually interested in hearing your definitions or seeing good examples of SQL. I'm a bit uncertain of what it is. The best I could do is, "SQL is a database creation and modification program."

Think you could toss me a bone, here?

  9. Anyone have experience with 2.5" hard drive to 5.25" IDE adaptor?

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: yahoo, google

I have a laptop hard drive that I've been holding on from when my older compaq presario 1200 gave out, and lately I saw a 3.5" to 5.25" IDE adaptor online, and I bought it in hopes of getting the data off of the old laptop hard drive. ...except um, I'm not sure where Pin 1 is on the laptop hard drive. There are four pins off on the left, and then a lot of pins on the right. There is one pin missing on the bottom row of the side that has a lot of pins.

I've heard that laptop hard drives get their power and i/o from the cable that connects it to the motherboard, so I don't want to risk assuming the laptop hard drive is like a normal 5.25" hard drive (which always have pin 1 and 2 closest to the power input). I looked around on google and yahoo for a few hours with the keywords "3.5" hard drive, pin settings" or "3.5" hard drive, pin numbers" but all I was able to learn was that the four separate pins are jumper pins.

... So umm.. on a laptop hard drive, where is Pin1?

PS - is a 3.5" to 5.25" adapter stable enough to be used as a long term set-up? (as in, would I be able to use the laptop hard drive like a normal 5.25" hard drive once I have it set up correctly?)

  10. Grr

    Date: 03/14/05     Keywords: no keywords

There has been far too much flaming, arguing and general bullshit around here lately. A bit of healthy debate is a good thing, but we've been bitching and moaning, and that serves no purpose. As of this post, I'm going to be much more trigger happy on freezing and deleting comments, and deleting posts -- at least until and unless we can play a bit more nicely. I'm not here to get in a fight, or read other people fighting. I'm here for the geekery. If I want fisticuffs, there are other communities I can take part in.

NB: this policy includes the deleting of questions that are better asked in other communities.

  13. Recent Run Programs list

    Date: 03/13/05     Keywords: software

After clearing my Recent Run Programs list from my Start menu (WinXP SP2 Home), I am unable to get any to show up again. Must there be a certain number of times a program is run before it will show up on the list again? I have run several programs several times and nothing yet. Searching the 'net only comes up with ways to delete the Recent Run Programs list. Speaking of....

I should point out though, that I recently used a program that deletes computer tracks (history, cookies, temporary internet files, open/save files, recycle bin, etc... I'm sure you know what else this type of program is capable of). This also deleted my Recent Run Programs list. But I see no evidence within this software (Privacy Eraser Pro) that shows that the functionability of the Recent Run Programs list has been turned off and I am certainly unaware of any method that would shut this feature off.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

  14. Double Router networking

    Date: 03/13/05     Keywords: no keywords

I just bought a Linksys WRT54G (802.11 G wirless router/switch) to hook up to my network along with my existing router, a BEFSR41 (Cable/DSL router/switch).

Here is my dillema: Whenever I put the routers on the same network (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2) to allow the computers on both routers to see each other my internet services go on and offline CONSTANTLY... I tried this previously with a D-Link wireless router before and had the same problem.

When I hook up the routers on different networks (192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1) it works fine for Internet browsing, but then I can't see the other computers in the house...

Ideally I'd like to be able to have the computers on the wireless router/switch be able to communicate with the wired router/switch like they can when they are both on the 1.x network, but without my AIM going on and offline every 20 seconds.

Any shared suggestions / experiences with this would be appreciated.

  15. Epson Ink

    Date: 03/13/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have a CX4600 which I have to replace the ink on because I do a lot of photo work and also a lot of scanning of documents and printing of bills. Now compared to what I get paid it isn't so bad and I know I should get a laser printer for the bills. BUT I was wondering what you all thought was the best ink to buy for this thing. I mean I know on newegg.com they have it all for about $36 for the set. However I did find offbrand kinds for about $15 for the whole set. $3 each color, and $6 for the black. So I'm just wondering what you trust your printers with.

i've read the docs and only see how to make basic color changes in putty so either i'm missing something (entirely likely) or putty doesnt do pretty emacs colors. i'm looking at what download.com has to offer in freeware ssh clients but i was wondering if you guys had any suggestions.
