  4. Building a computer

    Date: 03/10/05     Keywords: no keywords

Ok, I am currently building a computer. Well, I have been since Christmas actually, perhaps I will post the entire story to this drawn out ordeal later. My question is about power supplies and motherboards. I orderd standard ATX everything for this computer. The power supply's main power chord has 20 prongs on it. The motherboard's main slot has 24. I read online that you can still use these if you match up the chord and the motherboard in a certain way. Is this true? If not, is there an adapter I need, or should I get a new power supply?

  6. directory authentication

Date: 03/09/05     Keywords: database, web, linux

    Hi all,

I'm the new network admin for a boarding school. They were without an IT person for a while and as a result have almost zero infrastructure. I'm wanting to build things up the right way so I don't have to tear stuff down later.

Anyway, we have a lot of different clients. Mostly Windows and Macs, but some Linux boxes as well. I don't have much experience with multi-platform environments. What is the best choice for directory authentication? How much of a pain is it to get Macs and Linux to authenticate off of Active Directory? How much of a pain is it to get WinXP to authenticate off of OpenLDAP or NIS? We aren't doing anything terribly fancy. Basic file and print sharing, a couple of databases, etc. the school has its email hosted outside, but I'd like to bring that inside eventually. We have one Win server, 2 Mac servers, and a handful of Debian servers, though all of this is subject to change. The network isn't providing much in the way of services, just your basic web access, DHCP, DNS, etc.

I realize this is a relatively open question, but any discussion and advice would be great. Thanks.

  7. Photoshop + Publisher = GRRRR!

    Date: 03/09/05     Keywords: microsoft

This problem is beginning to REALLY irritate me.

I'm using Microsoft Publisher 2003 (from Office 2003 Enterprise), and Adobe Photoshop CS.

Whenever I try to print a document in Publisher that contains any images, it forces Photoshop to open. If I try to kill Photoshop (since it takes awhile to load and I don't need to load it), Publisher freezes until it can restart Photoshop. I have to sit there and wait for Photoshop to load before Publisher will unfreeze and print the document.

I'd love to know why it's doing this - it's freaking annoying! Any advice is appreciated.

  8. This might sound like a obsurdly stupid question but....

    Date: 03/09/05     Keywords: google

How the heck am I supposed to remove the IDE cable from the hard drive? It doesn't seem to want to come out.

This is what I managed to find when I googled around:

"You will see both a wide IDE ribbon cable and a small 4-pin power plug. Do not force them out. The ribbon cable is usually quite easy to remove"

    Hahaha.....Ummm....try reversing it -_-'.

I'm not being stupid. I'm a complete amaetur when it comes to pulling apart computers. I had to google around to find the safest way to dislodge expansion and graphics cards.

Do I patiently get my fingers sore trying to nudge the firmly attached cable out or do I recklessly pull at the IDE cable hoping that will do it?

Sorry for acting like a total smart@$$ but I don't even know if I am doing it the right way.

    Cheers,

  15. software that detects hardware?

    Date: 03/06/05     Keywords: web, google

I can't remember what this program was called, but there is this program that detects hardware in a computer and is able to provide device names and stuff... anyone know what that program is called? (I'm sure some of you are thinking I could just open up the computer and just write down serial numbers and google it, but one of the computers I'm dealing with right now is a laptop. Dell's website has been the least informative about what kind of network driver this laptop needs)

...and speaking of that particular laptop:
The guy who is the owner of this laptop, claimed the "mother board fried" and that he had to get a replacement motherboard, but it's a mystery to me as to why Dell (or whoever serviced this machine) had to wipe the hard drive in the process, and then half-assedly reinstall winXP with pretty much none of the hardware configured. Right now the only network things being detected on this laptop is the wireless network adapter (which can't be used in the dorms anyway, since resnet disallows private wireless routers, or actually, routers in general) and.. that's it. ;d it seems strange to me that windows xp didn't detect the onboard ethernet adapter.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 600m, and I tried running everything in the CDs that came with it, but hmm, I'm guessing that since it wasn't detected in windows, the driver installation program also refused to install the network driver. I may boot the laptop with knoppix just to check if there's a working network adapter in there at all, but until then, ideas and comments are appreciated :)

  17. Norton Antivirus and Internet Security, uninstalling

Date: 03/05/05     Keywords: security, virus, antivirus

    Hi,

I recently bought a Packard Bell laptop that came with Norton Internet Security and AntiVirus preinstalled but no media. I get Sophos Antivirus free through work and prefer ZoneAlarm for security so would really like to uninstall Norton. I've tried going through Control Panel!Add/Remove Programs and looking for an uninsrall icon but there doesn't seem to be one. I've disabled them both but each time I reboot I get prompted to to re-enable them.

Anyone know how I can remove them? (I'm used to UNIX where everything is open and honest; no hidden stuff, it's all in text files where you can see it)

    TIA

  20. Help Removing EliteBar

Date: 03/05/05     Keywords: software, browser, spyware, microsoft

I know you guys get request like this all the time, but any help is appreciated. My computer is really driving me nuts.

So, over the past week it seems I've gotten some nasty, impossible to remove spyware, causing a multitude of pop-ups on my computer. I always use Mozilla Firefox, but the other memebers of the house still use Explorer, so I know that's probably part of the problem.

I've used Spyware Doctor, Ad-Adware and Scan Spyware, but none of them seem to be able to delete something called EliteBar, which I've read causes obnoxious pop-ups amongst other things. They are all able to detect it and try to delete it, but when I restart my computer, it's back. Under the cut is my Hijack This log. I'm not very computer literate, so clear, step-by-step instructions would be great, but any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
