Transparent backgrounds of sub-content

Date: 07/18/11 (HTML Help)    Keywords: css

I am having trouble getting the borders and the background of the journal entries and the (apparently) 3 other boxes under it to be transparent so I just see the pattern i chose for the background through it. The header and footer aren't working either. I also have a specific border in my CSS that I still want to see but they're blocked out by the borders that appear when I try to make the entry background transparent.
