Linked picture with text as wordpress widgets

Hello!
I'm helping a friend to build up a pages she's basing of wordpress. Her wish is to have a menu on the right which would have a picture (something like 50x50) and text next to it and both woudl link to a certain page (inside of her page). Its not exactly recent posts option so i figured if anything i'd need to use the text option and write the html myself.And here comes the problem. I can make both and my friend is more or less happy which what i made but i'm not happy with what i got.
What i'm currently using is this:
But i don't like how the TEXT is automatically put on the top of the picture instead of middle if the text is only few words long. And put several of them together the space between pictures is to big, i'd like it to be just as big as is the space between 2 lines of text. Also not all the text gets underlines when you hover over it (and i'm not really sure whats causing that).
I also tried alternative:
Now i like this version much more. When several of them are put together (and using ul code only once for whole section) the space between images is smaller and all the text gets underlined when i hover over it, however the hole section gets put for about 5pixels to the right and the text is still put on the top of the picture which is not something i want.
I'd also like to ad a one "space" worth of space between picture and the text. If the text is long for only one line that easy but i get lost when the text is long for 2 or 3 lines .
Anyway ideas? I'm pretty sure this is a common problem, but i just don't know under which key words to search so i found nothing particularly useful at the moment -.-;;
