Exchange domain name suffix question

I just set up an MS Exchange 2003 server (on Windows 2003 Server) but didn't have the domain suffix right when I joined the domain.  The server is registered as "mail01.company.com" but should be registered as "mail01.subnet.company.com" instead.  If I remove the machine from the domain then I trash the GUID and would mess up Exchange... how else can I fix the registered DNS name in AD without messing things up?
