Interesting mapped drives issue

Hello all, a collegue of mine has a laptop that he hooks up to our intranet at work. We have all kinds of network drives via our intranet and one of them is commonly mapped to G: via Explorer.

My collegue also has a USB 5GB drive, when he first plugged it in Windows decided it would be a good idea to also be G: so there was a conflict. That was resolved and now the USB drive appears as Z:

BUT trying to access the network drive causes Explorer to hang, and there's also a range of drives listed in Explorer: U V W X and Y. From their name they all seem to be mapped to where G: is.

Several people have had a go at fixing this so I'm unsure what's going on. I tried removing all the mapped drives and unpluging the USB drive. But tryiong to access the network still causes hangs. ALSO all the U V W X Y & Z drive letters come back after refreshing Explorer.

The network drive needs to be on G: and the USB would be good on Z: Any ideas where to go next? @.@'
