Quicktime needed?

Ok, so I used to be able to watch certain things online without having the need for any plugin or any extension. But now I can't view anything that has sound/certain media, things like pages on www.ytmnd.com, it asks for a plugin and then it tells me to download and install quicktime and I have to install it manually. I never needed it before, why do I need it now?
Also on other sites that have media on them, like a media player with play buttons and such, they will not show up, the buttons, just the screen will play, but no buttons.

    I'm on Mozilla Firefox 1.0.6
The only extensions that I have are the Tabbed one and the Accuweather one.
