The idea that the world would pay Verizon an IP tax on common Internet standards is absurd. It's just another way to keep the U.S. phone network marching backward, and assure that the Internet's future is made in Asia.

If you and your trading partners want to create your own flavor of XML you can do so, using any tags you want. So long as all of you attach the same meanings to the tags, so long as there is consensus and transparency, your scheme works for all of you. But the benefits really start growing when whole industries, or industry as a whole, uses the same set of tags, as in ebXML.

My guess is there are a lot of meetings taking place in Redmond today, and a lot of phone calls were made over the weekend, and this controversy is going to go away soon. Ballmer will either be apologizing or he'll be out on his ear, and Microsoft will make some public statement claiming this was all a misunderstanding.
