Can't open new pages

I installed XP (Home, SP2) on our laptop a couple of days ago, along with Opera 8.51
Now when I try to open a link in a new page, it overwrites the current page.
Even going through the menu (File->New Page) just overwrites the current page with a blank one.
I'm pretty sure it was working OK at first but today my wife's noticed this problem.

I've compared the settings to the version (also 8.51) that's running just fine on Win2k and I can't see any difference. I thought it might be the "Reuse existing page" option but that's the same (i.e. ticked) on the Win2k version too.

How can I convince Opera to go back to our beloved tabbed setup before my wife kills me for messing with the laptop?

/If it ain't broke, keep updating it until it is.

Update: Don't worry - I renamed the application data folder (Application Data\Opera) and ran Opera; it went to the usual Getting Started page and I could open new pages just fine. Must have been something in the .INI file [goes off to compare them] ... That's odd - the only difference that looks relevant is that the old/broken .INI file contains "New Window=1" but the new/working one doesn't. I've post the whole differences listing as a comment in case anyone's interested.
