UserJS.org is a site dedicated to User JavaScript for Opera. There are also some general JavaScript articles.
They've got two feeds that are now syndicated on LJ: userjs_scripts and userjs_news.

Browser JavaScript?
Date: 06/17/05
Keywords: browser, java, web
Does anyone have any experience with this yet? I've been reading "Browser JavaScript Explained," and it sounds pretty neat to me.
Browser JavaScript is a feature that allows Opera to automatically fix incompatible Web pages, out of date scripts, and pages that inadvertently block Opera.
There's also a list of patched sites on that explanation page. :)

8.01
Date: 06/16/05
Keywords: xml, java, security
After weeks of delays, version 8.01 has finally been released.
It's worth getting for the following reasons (there are, of course, many others):
- It contains several security fixes.
- It finally adds enough support for XmlHttpRequest such that LiveJournal's nifty javascript comment handling stuff works.
p.s. if you're going to Opera.com anyway, use this link ← only 217 more hits to go :P

Opera 8.01
Date: 06/05/05
Keywords: linux
8.01 for Windows, Linux, and Mac is on the Opera ftp servers. It's not official yet, so for now, think of it as RC instead of final.
Oh, OS changed the version number for search.ini again. If you have a custom search.ini, set the version to 6 to keep it from being overwritten.

Opera is beavering away at passing the webstandards.org Acid2 Test, see?
Safari was the first browser to pass the test, albeit it in an internal build, but it looks like Opera could be the first cross-platform browser to pass. (incidentally, is there any word on how far Gecko is progressing with this?)

pop up from livejournal
Date: 04/23/05
Keywords: programming
this pop up comes up only when I have livejournal open:
"New newsfeed messages
latest livejournal posts"
after "new newsfeed messages" there is usually a number of how many new messages there are. This is not only an annoyance because it comes up at least every half hour, but it slows my computer down when it does it. I have asked livejournal support and they were no help they told me to "consult the documentation provided with Opera to determine how to disable this screen." which I have no idea how to do if it is even possible. Is there anyone that can help me or knows what to do?
If anyone else needs any help with Opera I am pretty good with it so long as it is not a programming problem.
ty for any help you can give

search.ini issue
Date: 04/21/05
Keywords: web
The only problem I've had with Opera 8 is that my custom search doesn't work anymore. (It worked perfectly with all public beta versions of 8.) You type in "d help" and it queries www.m-w.com for the word "help." It's quite handy.
This is the code I was using:
[Search Engine 32]
Name=&Merriam-Webster Dictionary
URL=http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=%s&submit
Key=d
Is post=0
Has endseparator=0
Encoding=utf-8
Search Type=0
Verbtext=17063
Position=-1
Nameid=0
Query=
Now it doesn't work no matter what I try. I don't use individual profiles, so all my settings like this are in C:\program files\opera\profile - but just in case I put it in the main Opera folder in Program Files, as well. Anyone have any ideas?

'sup community?
Date: 04/20/05
Keywords: software
Opera currently has an affiliate program whereby 250 unique site referals earns a free Opera 8 registration code.
I've stuck a link to one of these on the info page.
I have already paid for the software, so on the off chance that it does actually get 250 unique referals (clicking over and over again will do nothing) I'll give the code away as a competition prize in the community.
Happy clicking. :)

To ease your minds
Date: 04/20/05
Keywords: linux
In case anyone gets frightened by the last post, I've had no problem upgrading my Linux boxen to Opera 8. Redhat 9, Fedora 2 and 3 and Feather Linux(hard-drive install) all took Opera 8 just fine, kept the configs, registration and worked like a charm. The problems seem to be localized, so ... happy upgrading.

Opera upgrade problems
Date: 04/20/05
Keywords: web
Last night I upgraded Opera from 7.54 u2 to 8.0 (on Fedora FC3).
Starting Opera ... begins to draw the 7 (or so) windows open from the last session ... crashes.
Run it from the command line - same thing - only output is "Segmentation fault". :(
Restart with only the home page (http://www.livejournal.com/) = OK. Some toolbars aren't shown (Main & Status) so turn them on. Close window; new window; enter my web site's URL (http://www.henman.ca/) - crashes!
Restart with just home page again; close window; new window; http://www.henman.ca/ = OK now. Open multiple new windows - OK. Close opera.
Restart opera with the windows that were left open when I shutdown v7.54u2 (i.e. use saved session) - OK!?
OK, I don't understand why, but without actually changing anything, it's seems OK now!
One thing though - the fonts appear to be different. Not worse, just different. Curious.
Spoke to soon! It's now crashing every time I try to restart it. :(
That's it! I've had enough!
# rpm --erase opera
# rpm -Uvh opera-7.54-20050131.5-shared-qt.i386-en.rpm
(because I happen to keep RPMs that I download!)
Back to v7.54u2 :)
[Meanwhile, over on the Win2k box, v8 is just fine!]

playing with op8
Date: 04/19/05
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, folks, I just downloaded and installed version 8, and I'm looking for the page minimization dealie that is on 6/7. I know that it can be done with the mouse gestures, but I miss the buttons showing up on the upper right or with a click on the page tabs. Any help?
I noticed that the tabs have a button to close, which could be nifty. However, the window to the left pops up; in Firefox, the window to the right pops up, and I find that more convenient.
And the opera help page isn't loading, because everyone is busy straining the servers to download the new version, I bet. I'll have to figure out how to use the voice command to speak Livejournal entries in a whiny emo voice later.
Any thoughts on Opera8?

7 to 8 licensing?
Date: 04/19/05
Keywords: no keywords
I think I heard that upgrading from 7 to (the official version of) 8 would be free for v. 7 licensees. Is this true? I don't mind upgrading, but I can't find anything off-hand about it.
I know the site does say that decimal upgrades are free, though.

The final of Opera 8 is up on their FTP server, won't be on the main page till tomorrow when it is "officially released"...

The actual FTP page is currently getting "hammered", but I was able to get there using my FTP client. Currently got it installed and checking things out.

Education program - too good to be true?
Date: 04/10/05
Keywords: no keywords
I just now looked through all the possibilities for getting a license for Opera, and stumbled across the Opera Higher Education Program. I'm a bit bad with understanding this sort of things and am just generally loath to believe some things that seem too good are true, so, if someone is able to clarify this I would be very thankful! :)
I am a first-year university student in a Finnish university. Am I reading this education program correctly in interpreting it so that... if I can get my university to agree to signing up for the program, I could receive a free license for my private home computer? If this is a correct interpretation, who do you think I should first be contacting about this?
Thanks in advance for any answers. :) If this doesn't work I'll be looking at the student discount for a license.

Memory leak.
Date: 04/06/05

Has anyone else noticed a huge memory leak in the Linux port of Opera 8 Beta 3 or is it something I goofed in my tweaking? I left it running overnight, and by the time morning rolled around it was eating up 384MB of virtual memory.
