New Programmer Policy

    Date: 04/17/06 (Software)    Keywords: programming

A friend of mine told me about this company policy when hiring computer programmers right out of college - especially for those with no programming experience on their resumes.

"For the first year here, you have to maintain somebody else's code."
"For the second year here, you may write new code, but you have to maintain your own code."

The purpose for the policy was "New programmers need to demonstrate they can maintain existing code before they may write new code, and must demonstrate they can write maintainable code before they can expect somebody else to maintain their code."

    Just thought I would share.
