  2. SqlDataSource UpdateParemeters

    Date: 12/06/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: database, sql

    FYI: Resolved.

    Hey gang,

    I'm in the process of fixing an application a former programmer slap together. We found the database design went against company standards, so our DBA went through to fix her up. Now I'm working on the task of fixing the UI code to interact properly with the new changes.

    However, I've ran in to a strange behavior with UpdateParameters within my SqlDataSource.

    Originally, the Stored Proc calls for the following parameters:

    @id int = 0,
    @original_id int = 0,
    @original_division_id int = 0,
    @division int = 0,
    @division_id int = 0,
    @revenue_type varchar(100) = '',
    @revenue_num int = 0

    Our DBA changed to:

    @original_id int = 0,
    @original_division_id int = 0,
    @division int = 0,
    @division_id int = 0,
    @revenue_type varchar(100) = '',
    @revenue_num int = 0

    The difference? @id has been removed. (Original programmer wasn't even friggin using it!)

    Now I've updated my SqlDataSource UpdateParameters to reflect changes, only to find when running SQL Profiler that my stored proc is being executed with 1 added parameter... @id!!

    exec updRevenueType @original_id = 15, @original_division_id = 2, @division = 2, @division_id = 2, @revenue_type = N'Broadcast Designeeee', @revenue_num = 4020, @id = 15

    Does SqlDataSource do some weirdness on the background I'm unaware of that looks at the database scheme or something and add it's own parameters? This is rather frustrating trying to find out where this stray parameter is coming from! Anyone else run in to similar behavior?

  3. Dumb SQL Server Query question

    Date: 12/01/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: database, sql

    I'm writing a program that does queries on a database, and we just converted to a code-table format (instead of whole strings going in the DB we just put in numbers that reference another table which has all the definitions. Note that these tables are NOT connected (sadly.)) Anyways I'm writing this program that returns data from the database into a datagridview. I've been told that I can't do the conversion on the DataSet or the DGV side and that SQL server needs to do it, so basically I need to write a query that will get all the records that match the request, and then in a particular column, instead of putting in the number that is in teh database, have it look at the code table, find the matching id, and have THAT be displayed instead.

    Here's conceptually what I'm going for (this is NOT SQL compliant and my SQL knowledge isn't that great. Hell if it was I wouldn't be here asking this question which I know any standard SQL DB user will likely know the answer to):

    SELECT * FROM Table1, Table2
    In Table1.Column,
    instead of showing the code in it,
    WHERE Table1.Column = Table2.Column(id),
    Display in Table1.Column the info in Table2.Description.

    I realize this is sort of hard to describe in text vs speech. I know there's an easy way to do this with an Inner Join, but that simply adds the info from the 2nd table to the end of the first (and displayed) table.

    Here's the SQL code

    SELECT * FROM sfrf_request
    INNER JOIN sfrf_request_type
    ON CONVERT(int,sfrf_request.request_type)=sfrf_request_type.id
    WHERE sfrf_request.id = ddl1.SelectedIndex

    BTW the CONVERT function is used because the column has string data in it still and thus I can't reference it as an integer.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  4. Windows XP Programming and Gaming Users

    Date: 11/29/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: programming, sql, web

    Ok this is a weird question that may not be appropriate here but here's my situation: I'll be getting a new computer for Xmas that will be a powerful machine that will be used for 2 primary functions: Programming and Gaming. Thing is that basically I do alot of web programming so I'm going to have VS 2003 and 2005, SQL Server (possibly 2000 AND 2005), and IIS. As you know gaming requires alot of system resources and memory and I don't want to have to go to task manager everytime I boot up to play a game to close off all the programming and server programs. So what I'm wondering is whether or not I should:

    A: Set up 2 user accounts on my computer (this is an XP Pro machine) with one for programming and one for gaming that has a modified startup script to disable everything (which i have no experience in writing BTW). I also don't know if this would even free up all the memory that I'd want.

    B: Install 2 instances of XP Pro and use a dual boot configuration with one config with all the server and programming tools and one without. HD space isnt' really an issue since I will have a 250 gig hard drive (and likely will be adding more at a later date.) However I'm not very experienced with this sort of setup. I do plan on installing Windows XP 64-bit as well, so I'd have to do the 2 32-bit installations first and then do the 64-bit one. I'm not very keen on dealing with multiple partitions for all my programs, especially if they can't talk to one another (although I bet there's tools that allow you to view on the parttions, like I said I don't have much experience with this.) I know the 64 will require its own partition.

    Sorry if this is really "out there" or inappropriate for this community. If someone knows a more appropriate one please let me know. I just figured since there appears to be a decent number of intelligent computer users here that perhaps there'd be someone here who could help me as well. Thanks alot.

  5. Language Choice

    Date: 01/17/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, programming, mysql, database, sql, java, postgresql, web, apache

    I need some advice in regard to which language to use for developing a dynamic website. My wife and I are thinking about creating a LMAO website, which will allow people to organize various LMAO projects. The website will allow users to register, log in, create projects, join projects, upload pictures, and so on. It's not terribly large project, but still pretty complicated for people who haven't done any web development and little programming in general.

    The first problem is deciding upon a language to use. The site will, at least in the beginning, run on our server at home, which is FreeBSD running Apache2 (or anything else we want, to be honest. I'm not giving up FreeBSD, though!). It looks like all major languages in the field, including PERL, Ruby (and Ruby on Rails), Python, and PHP work well with Apache, so that shouldn't be a problem. For the database back-end, we'll be using PostgreSQL or MySQL (if we have to), both of which are widely supported as well.

    My wife doesn't have much experience in programming, so for her it will be new experience one way or the other. I have some, but still little. The only language I'm familiar with and can actually write something useful in is Common Lisp. There exists mod_lisp and a couple of web development frameworks, TBNL and UnCommon Web, but the process seems hacky -- from what I can tell -- unless one uses a commercial CL implementations that cost a lot.

    I've looked briefly at Python and Ruby, as well as asked for opinions from various groups of people (programmers who prefer Lisp, Ruby, or Python), but it's all still looks like mambo-jumbo to me. The only thing they agree on is that one should refrain from using PHP for anything non-trivial, so I'm inclined to believe that. As far as PERL is concerned, I've always had a distaste for it, so am not all that keen on using it.

    Could anyone recommend one of these language, or perhaps another one, that would be suitable for our needs? I've pretty much made up my mind in regards to PHP and PERL, so I'm not looking for a debate about why they're good. I also wish to stay away from Windows-based and Java-based solutions.

  6. Database insert parameters.

    Date: 01/09/06 (C Sharp)    Keywords: database, sql

    Okay, I'm stumped.

    I'm using Intersystems Cache, for which there seem to be no peer help fora anywhere on the net, though theoretically it shouldn't matter, should it? ODBC is ODBC, I hope. In any case, here's a quick code snippet:

           private void btnSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
            {
                try
                {
                    string InsertString = "INSERT INTO Erasmus.Publisher(Name, PublisherURL) VALUES(@Name,@URL)";
                    ErasmusTransaction = ErasmusConnection.BeginTransaction(IsolationLevel.ReadCommitted);
                    ErasmusInsertCommand = new OdbcCommand(InsertString, ErasmusConnection, ErasmusTransaction);

                    OdbcParameter prmName = new OdbcParameter();
                    prmName.Direction = ParameterDirection.Input;
                    prmName.OdbcType = OdbcType.VarChar;
                    prmName.Value = txtName.Text;
                    prmName.ParameterName = "@Name";
                    ErasmusInsertCommand.Parameters.Add(prmName);

    I've also tried it with:

           private void btnSave_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
            {
                try
                {
                    string InsertString = "INSERT INTO Erasmus.Publisher(Name, PublisherURL) VALUES(@Name,@URL)";
                    ErasmusTransaction = ErasmusConnection.BeginTransaction(IsolationLevel.ReadCommitted);
                    ErasmusInsertCommand = new OdbcCommand(InsertString, ErasmusConnection, ErasmusTransaction);

                    ErasmusInsertCommand.Parameters.Add("@Name", OdbcType.VarChar, 100).Value = txtName.Text;

    (hope that formats right.)

    Just before we get to the actual query, I've got a messagebox showing ErasmusInsertCommand.CommandText. "@Name" and "@URL" are not switched with the contents of the text boxes on the form (though in all honesty I'm not sure if they should be; perhaps I should be checking the parameter values?). The transaction is rolled back, because the insert command fails. The beginning of the error message (I don't get the whole thing in the message box) is:

    ERROR [42000][Cache ODBC][State:37000][Native Code 12]
    [C:\Documents and Settings\[etc.]]
    [SQLCODE: -12: A term expected, beginning with one of the following: identifier, constant, aggregate, $$, :, (, +, -, %ALPHALP, %EXACT, %SQLSTRING, %SQLUPPER, %STRING, or %UPPER]
    [Cache Error: SYNTAXerrdone+1^%qaqqt]
    [Details: Prepare]

    I've left out some greater-than and less-than symbols in order not to confuse LJ.

    Despite what I see in the error message, I am hoping against hope this is a generic error message, and someone's gotten it on another database (or that someone here works with Cache). All I get from the Intersystems docs about is is an error reference that gives me the same message, and not what I can do about it. If anyone has any ideas, I'm at my wits' end with this...

    oh, yeah: C# 2005 Express Edition, .Net 2.0.

  7. Of Character Encodings

    Date: 11/18/05 (C Sharp)    Keywords: database, asp, sql, web

    I am converting a web app from ASP to ASP.net and have stumbled on an annoying problem.

    1. ASP code accepts user input and stores value in the database
    SQL field type is nvarchar(200).
    BUT the query does not use N'' to specify that the string is unicode.

    2. Value stored in the database is '陳小春'

    3. Value displayed on web page (utf8 encoding, no server side changes) is '陳小春'

    4. Actual UTF data in the database is displayed on screen as ???
    (database value: 人, display value: ?)

    5. ASP.net application using the EXACT same queries results in point 4 being displayed correctly (as japanese) but the values that were displayed correctly in the ASP app are now exactly as they are in the database.

    Please Help ... My only guess was that the ADO connection was converting the UTF in the database to Non-UTF for display in ASP and the ADO connection in .Net is preserving the Unicodeness of it.

    But i did a simple test in ASP where i selected the data, stored it in a variable and then inserted back into the database (non using N'')
    and well ... i got the exact same .... japanese was japanese the rest was garbage.

    Anyone have any ideas???

  9. INI handling functions... They were nonexistent as far as I knew...

    Date: 10/11/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web

    This has irked me for some time: The lack of INI handlers in PHP.

    I was moving my website around from host to host, until I settled, and needed a universal standard that I could write on and rely on that would work anywhere as I really wouldn't have a MySQL database everywhere I went. So I wrote this up after not finding a shred of a command for userlevel INI file handling. INI.Lib (Last Built Oct. 3rd, 2004)

    I hope some other people can make some use out of it as well I was able to. If you see any major errors or when you use it you can't for the life of you get past a certain bug, let me know and I will see if this one is any real difference from my current build (Apr. 3rd 2005). I may have just patched up a few commands here and there with my build that I caught in the original code and done a few optimizations. If anyone wants the current build, go ahead and drop me a line to cynagen at cynagen dot com, and I'll be more than happy to send you a copy of the current copy on my server; if enough of you report problems, I'll just repackage my current build and post that instead.

  10. Optimising MySQL

    Date: 06/28/05 (PHP Development)    Keywords: mysql, database, sql, google

    I'm working on a site at the moment and I'm trying to optimise the MySQL queries, to place less of a strain on the server and make generally neater code. I'm currently using this technique to pull the last 10 topics flagged as news from the database:

    $query = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_topics t WHERE t.tpc_news = '1' AND t.tpc_news_mod_id > 0 ORDER BY t.tpc_sticky DESC, t.tpc_time DESC LIMIT 10", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

    Then in the loop created by $results = mysql_fetch_array( $query ) using a second query to pull the content of the post:

    $news_sql = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_posts p WHERE p.pst_tpc_id = '".$results[ 'tpc_id' ]."' ORDER BY pst_time ASC LIMIT 1", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

    Now, although this works, it currently uses 11 queries, plus various others I'm using to create each page; so I'm trying to find a neater solution. I've tried some tutorials on sub-queries found on Google, to no avail. The following works if there's only one news topic but falls over if there's more:

    $query = mysql_query( "SELECT * FROM frm_posts p, frm_topics t WHERE p.pst_tpc_id = ( SELECT tpc_id FROM frm_topics t WHERE t.tpc_news = '1' AND t.tpc_news_mod_id > 0 ORDER BY t.tpc_sticky DESC, t.tpc_time DESC LIMIT 10 ) AND t.tpc_id = p.pst_tpc_id ORDER BY p.pst_time ASC LIMIT 1", $_GLOBALS[ 'sql' ] );

    I'd really appreciate it if anyone could lend a hand or point me in the right direction.

    MySQL 4.1.12a
    Operating System: Windows 98

    The error that I got when I tried using mysql_connect() on a php page:

    Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect()

    Things that I have done so far:
    Apache, mySQL, and PHP are in directories on the C drive, named accordingly

    in php.ini, this is what I changed (change in italics)
    doc_root = "C:\Apache\htdocs"
    extension_dir "C:\php\ext"

    Removed the ";" in front of extension = php_mysql.dll (Is there supposed to be quotation marks on this line?)

    Saved a copy of php.ini (after these changes) in the C:\Windows directory
    Saved copies of c:\php\libmysql.dll & c:\php\ext\php_mysql.dll to the C:\Windows directory

    [PHP]

    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; About php.ini ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; This file controls many aspects of PHP's behavior. In order for PHP to
    ; read it, it must be named 'php.ini'. PHP looks for it in the current
    ; working directory, in the path designated by the environment variable
    ; PHPRC, and in the path that was defined in compile time (in that order).
    ; Under Windows, the compile-time path is the Windows directory. The
    ; path in which the php.ini file is looked for can be overridden using
    ; the -c argument in command line mode.
    ;
    ; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and Lines
    ; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
    ; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
    ; they might mean something in the future.
    ;
    ; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
    ; directive = value
    ; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
    ;
    ; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
    ; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
    ; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), or a quoted string ("foo").
    ;
    ; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
    ; | bitwise OR
    ; & bitwise AND
    ; ~ bitwise NOT
    ; ! boolean NOT
    ;
    ; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
    ; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
    ;
    ; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
    ; sign, or by using the None keyword:
    ;
    ; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
    ; foo = none ; sets foo to an empty string
    ; foo = "none" ; sets foo to the string 'none'
    ;
    ; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
    ; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
    ; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
    ;
    ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; About this file ;
    ;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;
    ; This is the recommended, PHP 5-style version of the php.ini-dist file. It
    ; sets some non standard settings, that make PHP more efficient, more secure,
    ; and encourage cleaner coding.
    ;
    ; The price is that with these settings, PHP may be incompatible with some
    ; applications, and sometimes, more difficult to develop with. Using this
    ; file is warmly recommended for production sites. As all of the changes from
    ; the standard settings are thoroughly documented, you can go over each one,
    ; and decide whether you want to use it or not.
    ;
    ; For general information about the php.ini file, please consult the php.ini-dist
    ; file, included in your PHP distribution.
    ;
    ; This file is different from the php.ini-dist file in the fact that it features
    ; different values for several directives, in order to improve performance, while
    ; possibly breaking compatibility with the standard out-of-the-box behavior of
    ; PHP. Please make sure you read what's different, and modify your scripts
    ; accordingly, if you decide to use this file instead.
    ;
    ; - register_globals = Off [Security, Performance]
    ; Global variables are no longer registered for input data (POST, GET, cookies,
    ; environment and other server variables). Instead of using $foo, you must use
    ; you can use $_REQUEST["foo"] (includes any variable that arrives through the
    ; request, namely, POST, GET and cookie variables), or use one of the specific
    ; $_GET["foo"], $_POST["foo"], $_COOKIE["foo"] or $_FILES["foo"], depending
    ; on where the input originates. Also, you can look at the
    ; import_request_variables() function.
    ; Note that register_globals is going to be depracated (i.e., turned off by
    ; default) in the next version of PHP, because it often leads to security bugs.
    ; Read http://php.net/manual/en/security.registerglobals.php for further
    ; information.
    ; - register_long_arrays = Off [Performance]
    ; Disables registration of the older (and deprecated) long predefined array
    ; variables ($HTTP_*_VARS). Instead, use the superglobals that were
    ; introduced in PHP 4.1.0
    ; - display_errors = Off [Security]
    ; With this directive set to off, errors that occur during the execution of
    ; scripts will no longer be displayed as a part of the script output, and thus,
    ; will no longer be exposed to remote users. With some errors, the error message
    ; content may expose information about your script, web server, or database
    ; server that may be exploitable for hacking. Production sites should have this
    ; directive set to off.
    ; - log_errors = On [Security]
    ; This directive complements the above one. Any errors that occur during the
    ; execution of your script will be logged (typically, to your server's error log,
    ; but can be configured in several ways). Along with setting display_errors to off,
    ; this setup gives you the ability to fully understand what may have gone wrong,
    ; without exposing any sensitive information to remote users.
    ; - output_buffering = 4096 [Performance]
    ; Set a 4KB output buffer. Enabling output buffering typically results in less
    ; writes, and sometimes less packets sent on the wire, which can often lead to
    ; better performance. The gain this directive actually yields greatly depends
    ; on which Web server you're working with, and what kind of scripts you're using.
    ; - register_argc_argv = Off [Performance]
    ; Disables registration of the somewhat redundant $argv and $argc global
    ; variables.
    ; - magic_quotes_gpc = Off [Performance]
    ; Input data is no longer escaped with slashes so that it can be sent into
    ; SQL databases without further manipulation. Instead, you should use the
    ; function addslashes() on each input element you wish to send to a database.
    ; - variables_order = "GPCS" [Performance]
    ; The environment variables are not hashed into the $_ENV. To access
    ; environment variables, you can use getenv() instead.
    ; - error_reporting = E_ALL [Code Cleanliness, Security(?)]
    ; By default, PHP surpresses errors of type E_NOTICE. These error messages
    ; are emitted for non-critical errors, but that could be a symptom of a bigger
    ; problem. Most notably, this will cause error messages about the use
    ; of uninitialized variables to be displayed.
    ; - allow_call_time_pass_reference = Off [Code cleanliness]
    ; It's not possible to decide to force a variable to be passed by reference
    ; when calling a function. The PHP 4 style to do this is by making the
    ; function require the relevant argument by reference.

    ; NOTE: Using short tags should be avoided when developing applications or
    ; libraries that are meant for redistribution, or deployment on PHP
    ; servers which are not under your control, because short tags may not
    ; be supported on the target server. For portable, redistributable code,

    ; Output buffering allows you to send header lines (including cookies) even
    ; after you send body content, at the price of slowing PHP's output layer a
    ; bit. You can enable output buffering during runtime by calling the output
    ; buffering functions. You can also enable output buffering for all files by
    ; setting this directive to On. If you wish to limit the size of the buffer
    ; to a certain size - you can use a maximum number of bytes instead of 'On', as
    ; a value for this directive (e.g., output_buffering=4096).
    output_buffering = 4096

    ; You can redirect all of the output of your scripts to a function. For
    ; example, if you set output_handler to "mb_output_handler", character
    ; encoding will be transparently converted to the specified encoding.
    ; Setting any output handler automatically turns on output buffering.
    ; Note: People who wrote portable scripts should not depend on this ini
    ; directive. Instead, explicitly set the output handler using ob_start().
    ; Using this ini directive may cause problems unless you know what script
    ; is doing.
    ; Note: You cannot use both "mb_output_handler" with "ob_iconv_handler"
    ; and you cannot use both "ob_gzhandler" and "zlib.output_compression".
    ; Note: output_handler must be empty if this is set 'On' !!!!
    ; Instead you must use zlib.output_handler.
    ;output_handler =

    ; Transparent output compression using the zlib library
    ; Valid values for this option are 'off', 'on', or a specific buffer size
    ; to be used for compression (default is 4KB)
    ; Note: Resulting chunk size may vary due to nature of compression. PHP
    ; outputs chunks that are few hundreds bytes each as a result of
    ; compression. If you prefer a larger chunk size for better
    ; performance, enable output_buffering in addition.
    ; Note: You need to use zlib.output_handler instead of the standard
    ; output_handler, or otherwise the output will be corrupted.
    zlib.output_compression = Off

    ; You cannot specify additional output handlers if zlib.output_compression
    ; is activated here. This setting does the same as output_handler but in
    ; a different order.
    ;zlib.output_handler =

    ; Implicit flush tells PHP to tell the output layer to flush itself
    ; automatically after every output block. This is equivalent to calling the
    ; PHP function flush() after each and every call to print() or echo() and each
    ; and every HTML block. Turning this option on has serious performance
    ; implications and is generally recommended for debugging purposes only.
    implicit_flush = Off

    ; The unserialize callback function will be called (with the undefined class'
    ; name as parameter), if the unserializer finds an undefined class
    ; which should be instanciated.

    Hi all,

    I'm looking for a way to update a table based upon a recordset returned from a stored procedure.

    It appears as if you can't join on the results from a stored procedure nor loop over those records using a cursor.

    I will be the first to admit, I often miss things when combing through documentation, but I was hoping to use a join in an update statement (which I could do, but I would prefer not to duplicate the logic that I've already got stored in this stored procedure)

    If anyone can offer any suggestions, I would be most greatful.

  14. MS SQL server help?

    - eventDate

    speaker

    person
    - personID
    - firstName
    - lastName

    the task: i need to collect all occurrences when a speakername had been changed in the system. returning in this query: the utteranceID, original speakerName, and final speakerName. I am using MS SQL Server, so i can't use a MINUS as i would have liked to.

    -- here is what i tried
    -- sadly this is lacking by not returning all of the rows where a speakerName change has occurred
    select uh1.utteranceID,
    uh1.speakerName AS originalSpearkerName,
    uh2.speakerName AS finalSpearkerName
    from utteranceHistory uh1 INNER JOIN utteranceHistory uh2

    utteranceHistory where utteranceID = uh1.utteranceID)
    AND uh2.utteranceHistoryID = (SELECT MAX(utteranceHistoryID) FROM
    utteranceHistory utteranceID = uh2.utteranceID)
    ORDER BY uh1.utteranceID

    -- here is what returns all the changes in the speakerName, however
    -- returns two rows per utteranceId, which is really not easy to format
    -- especially when the results i am working with are in the thousands.

    SELECT utteranceID, speakerName
    FROM utteranceHistory
    WHERE utteranceID IN
    (
    SELECT utteranceID
    FROM utteranceHistory
    WHERE speakerName IS NOT NULL
    GROUP BY utteranceid HAVING count(utteranceid) =2

  15. Hello World and a question

    Date: 01/03/06 (SQL Server)    Keywords: database, sql

    Just joined. Looks like a nice comm.

    Quick question:

    I have a production database that is about 1 GB in size. I have been tasked to script that baby out into sql files. The tables, procedures, etc. should be little problem (thanks to the database scripting wizard), but the data is eluding me. How can I (relatively automated) script table data into a series of INSERT statements?

    Is there any way to avoid manually typing:
    "INSERT INTO tbl_WHATEVER (ID, FIELD1, FIELD2, ...) VALUES (1, 1, 1, ...)"?

    Thanks in advance!

  16. Two completely unrelated SQL Server 2005 questions.

    Date: 12/30/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: sql

    1. In query nalyzer, type either of the following and run it:
    PRINT 365/183
    PRINT CAST(365/183 AS float)

    If your answer is 1 (or 1.0), congratulations, you win. You get to tell me what switch we both need to flip to get the correct (mathematically, anyway) answer.

    2. I'm porting a horribly-written Access application to SQL Server. It contains a table with three columns. Each of these columns corresponds to a dropdown box on a form. The way it's supposed to be written is that a value selected in column A will populate the list in column B, etc., since only certain values in column B should be present for any given value in column A. The monkeywrench in the works is that the values in B are not necessarily unique to the values in A, and the values in C are definitely not unique to the values in B-- but not all values in B are applicable to all values of A, and all values in C are not etc. As an example:

    A: Inpatient, Outpatient, Other
    B: Transplant, Maternity, Addiction Treatment
    C: Bone Marrow Transplant Allogenic, Caesarian Section, Emergency Room

    It's relatively obvious that Outpatient in A will never correspond to Transplant in B; Transplant will always, short of a medical miracle, be an inpatient procedure. Addiction Treatment, though, can be on either an inpatient or outpatient basis. (I'm lobbying for getting rid of "other" altogether.) Similarly, Bone Marrow Transplant Allergenic will, good lord willin' and cricks don't rise, never apply to maternity-- but Emergency Room could concievably apply to just about anything in either column A or column B, because you can show up at the ER needing, well, anything.

    What I've been mulling over is having three different lookup tables, each with two columns-- ID and Description-- and a fourth column that would list the valid IDs that can go together for each. That, however, ultimately saves me not much room, will require manual additions to the core table whenever new categories are added, and would probably end up being slower. (Actually, anything will end up being slower, seeing as the Access app takes the Chinese-menu method-- display anything and let the user pick whatever-- but I'd like to cut the speed decrease as much as possible.) We're still in the brainstorming phase with this, so there aren't any ideas which will undercut work that's already been done. If you have any to throw into the ring, I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!

  18. A small problem

    Date: 12/08/05 (SQL Server)    Keywords: database, sql

    I am having some issues starting a procedure. I need to create a sql procedure where the user creates a new dog in a database. The information that is going to be inserted is : gender first, which will stop the program if not identified in the database, breed, which will go under unknown if there is no existing record in database, owner id, which will go under ORPHAN if no existing record, eye color, which will create a new entry for a new eye color is not already in DB, and finally create the dog with dog_id once all the other parts are taken care of. I need to have exception handling in this procedure as well. I would like someone to help me to start this.

    http://www.sqledit.com/dg/

    Yesterday after lunch, I got one of those famous, hurried "critical" requests to export some data to a vendor for an important project. Someone from our Stock Administration team insisted on meeting with me to give me a USB drive to get the database image. Apparently, they needed someone to import the data on our system, then export it in a format requested by the vendor in order to test and configure a new offering for us.

    I was already irritated that yet another team had failed to document and obtain resources for their data requirements, therefore making an emergency for me that very important people would hear about if I didn't follow through. I did what I aways do, I said I'd look at it and see what could be done. Oh man...you know what I saw? This dude had been walking around all over the place with this little flash drive in is pocket with stock administration data for EVERYONE IN OUR COMPANY. This data included Social Security Numbers, Birthday's, Names, Addresses, Salaries, and Stock Options. AND he wanted me to just send it off to some company to play around with. I was pretty mad, especially when he had his manager call me to complain.

    I explained that this was in violation with our SOX commitments and that the data would have to be at the very least cleansed before it was sent out. I also mentioned that I didn't particularly want my SSN sent to parts unknown for a proof-of-concept project. After that I found a kind way of mentioning that carrying around sensitive data in an unsecure format is grounds for termination. Then his manager called the CIO. All the better, at least the CIO understands INFORMATION and the protection thereof!

    I didn't have a clue how to cleanse data, but it had to get done fast, so I did a google search for tools, and I found this little gem. The DTM Data Generator contained a robust set of tools for analyzing the SQL tables field by field, while retaining the referential integrity. It's very versatile. I'm definately going to use this again. I think I might finally generate those mean sets of data for our QA team to test against. This tool rocks.
