Search Engine Placement

Okay, I am a budding freelance designer...and I am in charge of my first major project since graduation. I am working on this alone, everything seems to be going well, but my client wants more information about search engine placement as well as how to get a top ranking site. I am really unclear how the best way to do this is, I've done some research on the web - basically ruling out the fact that meta tags (also inspired by the topic earlier this week) are not going to cut it and I've submitted the site to a bunch of search engines already. So far the searches only bring up the site if you search the company's name, not by keyword search. Any suggestions?
