today my kung fu is weak

dang it, I come up with a design that I like and I am having a heck of a time trying to make it work (ie it looks like junk or lines up all funky). Must be all the rain we are having that is throwing off my game.
    link to prototype : here
centering all of this in the page: no problem
making the two middle columns "play nice": more or less ok
keeping the fixed heights the same: not yet
my goal is to use as much css/html/plain old text so that I basically just have two images (bottom left and top right), the font used in the prototype is not what I have planned for the page (I really am not militant on fonts) so don't get really worked up on this.

my two designs that I have tried were to have two columns or two rows contained inside another div but something just is not working. The rows or columns I want to have fixed sizes, but float in the middle of the page.
