javascript onchange question

I'm working on a blog type site. An entry will consist of the post and a brief description. When viewing the posting form I want to automatically populate the description field with the first 250 characters of the post as the user types their post. my understanding is that the onChange() event should be triggered whenever the value of my textarea is changed. Unfortunately this does not appear to be the case. If I paste (ctrl-v) text into my textarea it does not trigger the event. What event or events do I need to catch if I want to catch any change to the value of a text area?

I've tested this in firefox and safari. Pasting into my textarea does not trigger the onChange even.
