Selecting / deselecting groups of checkboxes

On a search page I have a list of type_ids seperated by meta_category_ids. Users can select one or more type_ids, one or more meta_category_is, or any combination. It works just fine, except when a user selects one of the type_ids, then selects the meta_category_id above. Doing so "reverses" the checkboxes in the subgroup.

Paste this in your IDE to see what I mean..

I could loop through the meta_category_ids and make separate functions for each, but I really don't want to go there. Is there a way to do this with a single function?
