Server Side Includes (SSI)
Date: 10/08/07
Keywords: html
Are there any known reasons for why SSI might not be showing up on a page?
The server does allow for SSI, so that's not the issue.
I have tried using
#include file="text.html"
and
#include virtual="/folder/text.html"
and I continue to get the message "Error processing the SSI file" in the space where the include should appear :(

Shopping Cart Question
Date: 10/08/07
Keywords: java, shopping
I've been contacted by a good friend of mine that's a photographer and he wants to redo his site AND install a shopping cart system.
What is the easiest and least time consuming way to do this. I've heard good things about Paypal and their system. I don't know that much about java script but I've also read a bit about the extension shopping cart through Dreamweaver. Is it really free?
Thanks in advance and an additional question. For those shopping cart systems that you recomend can you give me the url of a site that uses it?

Hi everyone,
First off, thank you to everyone who has helped thus far!
I have two final small details both relating to IE6.
I still cannot get the sub menus in the drop down menu to display. It works in IE7, Firefox, etc, but not in IE6.
The other "problem", though if I don't find a solution to this one, I won't be overly upset, is in all other browsers I have the whole website centered. In IE6, it is aligned on the left.
The website again is here. The CSS is here and the Javascript is here.
I truly appreciate this. I have been googling this problem for several hours and would appreciate any feedback!!
THANK YOU!!!!
Brittany

HTML & Firefox
Date: 10/04/07
Keywords: css, html, web
Hello lovlies.
I am a self-taught webdesigner, using css, html and photoshop CS, paint shop pro and top style. I have been dinking around with webdesign for about ten years now, and I would like to think that I am pretty decent at it. Recently I have been tagged to do a large scale project, one of the largest sites that I have ever attempted to construct.
It's a re-design of a old outdated site. htto://clans.owbn.org/ventrue/
However, I have come to a problem that I can't quite seem to figure out. I prefer firefox for most of my browsing, and part of the site that I am designing is not looking quite right in it. I either come to the point where the iframe will not scroll all the way down, or the iframe has two seperate scroll bars.
I know there must be a simple resolution to this, but for the life of me I can not find it. This is seriously beginning to eat up the time that I have for the project.
Also, how can I get this design to work in larger resolutions? I think there is a HTML code out there that will work once I have a splash page installed that will size it to 1024 x 768 with the graphic dead center.
Any constructive criticisim, advice, etc is appreciated very much.

IT best practices for small organizations
Date: 10/04/07
Keywords: web
Hi,
I'm running a poll on what computer support is like where you work. It's at my LiveJournal Slant: Missing the Obvious.
"Best Practices" for IT are usually aimed at medium to large companies. Looking from a slant, how should an IT person determine best practices for a small company or organization? I have over twenty years of experience in IT, most of it with small companies and organizations.
No, I'm not selling anything -- this Live Journal is a hobby and also a way to establish my reputation on the web for potential employers.
Come by and see the poll results so far and add your own two cents worth!

Grrr to Network Solutions
Date: 10/03/07
Keywords: web
Sorry, just need to vent my spleen a little here. I just got off the phone with Network Solutions' customer service and I am displeased.
Back story: my boss gave me the task of organizing all our domains, so I started with a whois query to get the basics, print it out and put all the password and account info in one place. This isn't a problem until you introduce Network Solutions to the mix.
I have at least 20 of my clients domains listed with them, and at some point I must've crossed a magical number and have gotten my IP address black listed because I'd done too many inqiries.
I emailed their whois department and they respond 4 days later that after 24 hours I should be fine. But if I want to become an affiliate or reseller of their services I can have free reign on their whois system.
Yeah, Not so much. a) that was JULY. and I'm still blocked. b) if you pissing me off, why am I trying to sell your services??
I've emailed them a few times since then and I guess they've decided I'm not worth it and just haven't emailed me back. So I finally had enough and took things to customer service. After being on hold on and off for an hour, talking to a girl who didn't really sound like she knew what she was doing, I was told there's absolutely nothing I can do.
Apparently they keep their blocking recording engraved in marble somewhere because there's no way to get my IP removed. Which is especially crap because supposedly it refreshes every 24 hours (as they keep telling me)
RAR.
I feel a little bit better now, just for being able to un-recommend their services to a bunch of web designers. Hah.

Does anyone know....
Date: 10/03/07
Keywords: browser, css, web
I am using IE 7 and the website I'm designing has vertical drop down menus and I can't click on any of the sub-menus without the menus disappearing.
Is this an IE thing or just an IE 7 thing? Does anyone have any solutions for this?
It works correctly in Firefox, Netscape, Opera, and Safari, but of course it won't work correctly in the most popular browser!
Here is the site and here is the CSS.
Any help with this problem would be appreciated! I've been searching for over a week and I'm at a complete loss.
THANK YOU!

Shopping Cart Suggestions
Date: 10/03/07
Keywords: web, shopping
Hello, all. It's been a while since I've posted here. I have a question regarding shopping carts that I'm hoping someone can help me out with. I have recently created a website that uses the Paypal Shopping Cart for customers to purchase items. The company's product is being featured in a magazine and they would like to be able to use a promotional code for customers to receive free shipping when they purchase two or more items. The customers would need to enter in the promotional code in order to receive the free shipping. I know the basic Paypal Cart does not allow this. I've tried several work arounds and have been looking at some different solutions, but I can't seem to find one that is exactly what I need. What I'm looking for is something that will integrate with my Paypal Add to Cart button, allow the user to enter in a promotional code, and then calculate the free shipping based on total order quantities of two or more. (I hope that makes sense).
Does anyone have any suggestions of some carts I could try? Preferably free, but I think the company would be willing to pay a little if need be. Thanks so much for any input!

CSS Dropdown Menu
Date: 10/02/07
Keywords: css
I'm trying to tackle a CSS drop-down menu and well, having problems.
The menu in question
The css
- Basically, I would like the top-level links to be evenly spaced across the top. If I increase the font-size any as is, some text looks cramped and others skip to the next line.
- Same for 2nd-level
- I'd like the 3rd-level boxes to expand to fill the available text
I'm totally not trying to pawn off this on you guys, just getting frustrated here. When I think I have fixed one thing, another thing breaks.
Thanks all!

this might be an unusual request
Date: 09/28/07
Keywords: web
The situation is this: I am a total amateur. I had built and been running a simple website for an small organization at my university. Everything went fine for 2 years and recently the president and I got into it. Now she's trying to discredit me or something. She claims she took the code for the website to a tech who does web design at where she works and says he said it was the worst written code he'd ever seen.
I'm definitely not at all that knowledgeable, but I don't see what's wrong with it... If the end product is a navigable website how can it be that bad.... I suspect she's making it up...

Simple dynamic menu
Date: 09/25/07
Keywords: css, html
I'm running out of luck looking for a simple dynamic (and -relative-) HTML menu. I need one that when I hover over an existing link, a menu appears. Within this menu there would be an arrow for one or more options - hovering over this arrow/link will open a second menu with sub options.
What I don't need is flash, or an absolute-placed CSS menu. Any suggestions?

Need some more help
Date: 09/25/07
Keywords: no keywords
To get straight to the point, the main site is HERE and the Norwegian site HERE.
I basically want to link the Flash element in each Simpleviewer photo gallery ("Bilde Galleri") of the Norwegian site to pick up the same content from the English site, so I don´t have to copy/repeat the whole photo gallery (and in effect would have to maintain two galleries in future) again for the Norwegian site.
I hope someone here understands what I´m trying to do - cause it works for everything else, but not for the Flash element.
Any idea? I have tried various things and nothing works. HAILP!

Doctypes are evil...
Date: 09/25/07
Keywords: browser, html
I'm having a somewhat horrible problem.
The following page appears as desired. I've tested it on many different browsers and the only one with a slight variation is Internet Explorer.
http://www.ledgers.com/conference_test.html
I went to validate it and ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE.
Seriously. It said the doctype was wrong, even after attempting to fix it. Using Dreamweaver to convert it to another type breaks some elements of the design, specifically the tooltips. It won't validate properly because of the doctype problem, so I'm not even sure if the problems pointed out in the entire document are what they said they are seeing as they added some standard doctype just so it would validate as SOMETHING. Ugh...
I don't know...
I need some help if it can be given. What have I done wrong and how can I save what I've done?
PLEASE HELP. I'm so desperate I could cry.

Design Practices
Date: 09/23/07
Keywords: php, html, asp, web
Hello! I'm here with a request for help.
I've been designing personal websites for about 7-8 years now. Lately I've been feeling pretty unhappy with what I'm creating. Due to being busy with school, I've fallen behind on coding practices and don't really use PHP or newer HTML forms/styles. Coding has always been my favorite part of maintaining sites, so this is a bit stressing (not to mention embarrassing).
However, I am struggling the most with the design aspect of website creation. I'm wondering if any readers/posters here could point me in the direction of resources (eg tutorials, tips, gallery examples) of how to design good graphics. I'm concerned that I'm missing the basic elements of this process, such as what makes a good layout, how to do popular effects in a graphics program, little things of which the designer should be aware, and so forth. I know my way around Paint Shop Pro 7 (that's the limit of my abilities, I'm afraid), so I don't necessarily need an introduction to the tools available... but more or less how to use those tools to create aesthetic graphics.
In other words, any resources available (preferably for free, but if you have a book that'd you'd really recommend I would appreciate that, too) concerning design or possibly PHP would be wonderful.
Thanks so much in advance!
