Finally. We are done with the NFL Preview site we've been working on for SIX months. Built with Adobe Flex, the site uses some of the most cutting edge technology out there. Check out the About section for more info about the author, and let me know if you have any questions!
I hope its OK that I posted this here!! :)

The joys of a Windows server (or lack thereof)
Date: 09/10/07
Keywords: linux
Okay, so here's the deal. I just want to set up a subdomain that redirects to a subdirectory on the same domain. If this were a Linux server I know I could do this quickly in an .htaccess file with redirect prompts but it's a Windows 2000 server, and I can't configure it with IIS because I don't have the discs that can install additional networking services to the server via Remote Desktop Connection.
Is there another way to accomplish this? It seems terribly easy in theory but has been a huge pain instead. Thanks!

Your Favorite Reference Materials
Date: 09/10/07
Keywords: browser, web
Hi all,
For no pressing reason (well, possibly because I'm procrastinating on packing up my apartment to move next week), I'm trying to get together a good working list of web and graphic design reference resources.
What are your favorite places to go for reference when you're having trouble with browser compatibility, or need a refresher on something you don't use all the time, or just aren't sure where to start on a project? Conversely, is there a site or book that you ABSOLUTELY DON'T RECCOMEND for reference purposes?

i lost my job recently and i think that i'd like to give freelance web work a shot, i have a strong portfolio and the skills to pay the bills but i'm understandably hesitant.
are there any books or sites that i can read up on that offer tips/advice/insight? i don't really know what to do when it comes to invoicing or how much to charge, etc.. i mean i know i could figure it out on my own, but i wanted to check to see if anybody knew of any resources, or if anybody has any ideas/advice.
thank you very much and enjoy the football today! :)

I am using Dreamweaver

Just a minute ago, when I tried to save an html file, it said a sharing violation had occurred. Now I am looking at my webpage online and I it appears to be linking to the css sheet twice. I have looked in the codes and I swear it's only linking to it once. I only have the file uploaded once too. Can anyone make any sense out of this?

Adobe Flash courses?
Date: 09/04/07
Keywords: software, asp, web
Anyone have recommendations on Adobe Flash courses? I was looking at the New Horizons website (http://www.newhorizons.com/content/courseSchedule.aspx?ClassID=300003333&SiteID=45), where they offer 1 or 2-day long courses in all different kinds of software. This company was recommended to me by a friend, but they don't necessarily offer the specific courses I want in my area. I live in Westchester just north of NYC, so something in the Westchester/NYC/Connecticut area would be ideal.
Thanks!

Fixed vs. Absolute Positioning
Date: 09/04/07
Keywords: browser, css, web
So, I have made a few sites lately that require a little CSS workaround so I can get absolute positioning that is horizontally centered.
What I have been doing to achieve this is to create one div, with a width of 100%, and I absolutely position it to whatever position I want it to be on the page, vertically (top: 68px, or whatever). Then within that div I place a second div for my content, specify a width, and set the margins to auto. Voila: centering.
I have been wrestling with something bizarre on my latest website, however (and unfortunately, it's not online yet for me to show you the code). Despite the fact that none of my elements are wider than the window size, a bottom side-to-side scroll bar appears, and my theoretically centered items are moving side-to-side. Very slightly--no more than 25 pixels or so. (And this happened both in Firefox and Safari; I have not yet tested it in a Windows computer.)
I had a sneaking suspicion this may relate to my background image, which is 800px wide and therefore possibly wider than my window--however, when I moved the window so that part of it was offscreen and resized it to a gigantic width, the problem remained. Also, why would a browser use the background image as a basis for percentage widths, and not the window itself? So, question one: what do you think is making this happen?
To continue with my story:
A not-very-helpful fix was to set my parent div to 95%. This completely eliminated the problem of it moving around, but of course, threw off my centering. However, after restoring it to 100%, on a whim, I changed the positioning from absolute to fixed. Everything is now working fine in both browsers?
What's the story on this? I have read that fixed positioning is less all-around compatible with different browsers than absolute positioning... But I'm realizing, as I write this, that I don't fully understand the difference between fixed positioning vs. absolute positioning. In what instances would you use one instead of the other, and why? And why do you suppose my particular content is working properly in fixed, but not in absolute, position?
Disclaimer: This is really less of a "help me with my code" question and much more of a "give me your input on fixed and absolute positioning in general" question. So if you're going to say, "post the code and I'll tell you what's going on," and nothing else, don't bother about it--If I still have a problem later, I will post the code, but right now I'm more interested in hearing general thoughts. :)

Can't get domain
Date: 09/03/07
Keywords: asp
In 2005 I registered a domain with Netrillium.com,
since then I have gone onto a new host (I left Netrillium in 2006) because Netrillium
was becoming bad with their customer service.
They registered the domain, Bronxbuddies.com under their registration,
so to check the whois info, my name is not listed on it.
I contacted enom.com and they told me they couldn't do anything because
it the registrar is under Netrillium not me. But Netrillium hasn't responded to my
emails and has renewed the domain automatically.
I just want this domain out from the grasps of Netrillium and transfered
to the custody of my godaddy account.
GoDaddy tried to contact Netrillium to transfer but it never finalized because
Netrillium's communication was horrible.
I'm not sure what else to do :(

Random Image Plus

Greets folks,
I have no problem creating a random image generator in Javascript, but I would like to perhaps create a random div generator. What I would like to have is a random image appear and text that accompanies that image. Does that make sense?
Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
Cross to _css and javascript.

go live help

I have been making my website with adobe golive.
When I look at my website in golive it is fine. Everything is where it should be. When I uploaded some of my pages to the internet a lot of the elements shifted. I can't seem to figure out why this is happening.
If you have any suggestions on how to fix this that would be great because it is driving me insane!
-I used css for the background and a layout grid on top for all the elements.
If you want to take a look at the pages in their testing stage here is the link:

CSS Question(s)
Date: 08/27/07
Keywords: php, css
I've been working on my electronic press kit: http://amyhsieh.com/index.php?page=press
There's just one thing that I can't get to work, and if you click on the link, it should be pretty obvious: the lines that go under the headings go through the picture on the right. Here is the CSS: http://amyhsieh.com/styles/main.css - the revelant stuff is towards the end of the file, in p.sectionhead and div.rightimage.
Any suggestions? I'm trying to avoid tables, but I don't think that would be a good solution anyway because I want the content to go around the picture, IOW stay on the left of the picture and then when it gets to the bottom of the picture, go all the way across, under the picture. Basically exactly like it does now, but without those lines going all the way through.
Also, if anyone wants to critique the site in general (http://www.amyhsieh.com), that would of course be welcome as well. (FYI, I have deliberately disabled the "about" link in the menu, temporarily.) And as long as I'm posting about that, there was something else I was wondering about.
On the main page (http://www.amyhsieh.com), the main content is split into two columns. I really don't like the way I ended up writing this in CSS: each column is in its own DIV with its own class, and I fixed the height and position of both of them. That means that the background color will not stretch to fit more content; if I added another upcoming show for instance, that show would go off the end of the blue-purple background and onto the next thing.
I have been working with CSS for years now, and am still very puzzled about how to do multiple columns. Ideally, I would like both the left (blue-purple) and right (white) sections to behave as sort of one entity; whichever has the lengthier content, both columns would be set to the appropriate height to accomodate that. (Like how the height of a row is determined, in a table.) I feel like there should be a good way to do this using only CSS, particularly because I did try using tables to do this, and could not get it to look right at all. (It was a while ago, but IIRC, my big problem was the borders of the table -- I couldn't get the clean, borderless edges that I have now.)
Well, I think I've rambled enough. Again, the CSS for this page is here: http://amyhsieh.com/styles/main.css
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
