Blogging and Web Hosting
Date: 03/29/07
Keywords: web, hosting
Hello! I just had some questions about what web host to suggest for a couple of friends who would like to have a web site with political/science/gaming blogs for both of them to post in separately (they're taking two sides of a common issue). I'm trying to decide between WordPress or Movable Type (though I had my mind settled on WordPress) and am also seeing if anyone had any experience with the following hosting services:
Nearly Free Speech
RivalPro
Host Rocket
My friend has a domain name already, so he more or less needs a space for the actual content to go (the site has yet to be made at this point).
Thanks in advance!

Simple Question
Date: 03/29/07
Keywords: web
I wish I had some great terminology to throw at you guys so I sound like I know what I am talking about but I don't so I will try to make it sweet and simple.
Essentially I am trying to set up a webpage for a portfolio. I have knowledge of flash whatsoever besides how to open the program. How difficult would it be for a complete novice to download a web template and edit the images within flash? I am not changing any other elements besides simple text and images.
Please no flaming, I promise I will post elsewhere from now on ;)
Thanks guys for any help you could give!

My client wants me to design an e-newsletter. I have to design and code it. I am wondering should use CSS or just plain HTML. Somewhere I read that most email client do not support CSS. Do you think I can still use some CSS such as for font size, color and spacing?

community site setup- opinions?
Date: 03/27/07
Keywords: php, programming, css, web
Hi everyone, I was wondering what the best way to go to set up a community site. I'm set to inherit a local music-scene related website, or 'portal', that used to have a 'blog' of sorts on the front page with announcements from the administrator(s), a bulletin board for discussion and promotion, and a photo gallery where anyone who wanted could easily upload and display pictures they took at events. The old site was phpNuke powered and got hacked, and the old admin also simply doesn't feel like dealing with the site anymore, so it's currently on hiatus.
I was thinking wordpress perhaps? They have a new bbPress thing (from the makers of wordpress, a bulletin board that's code-light, customizable and skinnable, and standards-compliant) but I don't know what to do about a collaborative photo gallery; I think they used the coppermine in conjunction with the phpNuke before; I would like to have it so they could log in to the site once and use any of the functions.
I'm researching different options, and I'm pretty handy with webmastering, css-based design and some minor php-programming/tweaking, so that's not a problem. I would just like opinions on the best methods or open-source/cheap web-community resources.

2 different link styles????
Date: 03/23/07
Keywords: css
I want my page to have two different looking links. For simplicity, let's just say I want half of them to be blue and underlined and the rest to be red and not underlined. I don't know how to set up two distinct url styles.
My current in-page CSS (to make the links red and not underlined) looks like this:
[STYLE TYPE="text/css"]
[!--
a:link {text-decoration: none; color: red;}
a:active {text-decoration: none; color: red}
a:visited {text-decoration: none; color: red}
a:hover{text-decoration: none; color: red}
--]
[/STYLE]

no flash? here's an image
Date: 03/22/07

Hi folks, I haven't found it while googling, but I might not have the right phrasing to find it. Basically, I want to say that if a user does not have flash that an image should be displayed instead. I'm using just basic, simple code and dropped in my swf file. I saw it done, but far more complicatedly, on this site, and want a simple solution for my own page. Thanks!

web design/developer certifications
Date: 03/21/07
Keywords: html, technology, asp, web
I've been wondering about web-related technology certifications that might be worth my while. yes, I know experience is invaluable when it comes to enhancing a resume, but I also wouldn't mind having a solid certification in a web-related area. I'm not referring to web design degrees as I already have an associates degree (interactive multimedia) and I had been working towards a second web dev degree that may someday lead to a bachelors. so my questions on web certifications:
are there organizations/sites that are more highly regarded than others for what they have to offer?
what are some good ones?
what are some reputable/credible web certifications out there that you have, or know of?
I've only done a brief search so far, but I have noticed the HTML certification that w3schools has to offer:
http://www.w3schools.com/cert/cert_html.asp
any thoughts on that one?
thanks in advance for any input, advice, comments, etc..

column layout problem
Date: 03/20/07
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, I know this must be something super-obvious, but I've been hacking at this for a while and haven't figured out what's up. The objective is to get the "Your Worst Date" part to be a fixed-width right-hand column, with the stories/posts liquid and taking up the rest of the space. But for some (probably very simple!) reason, the right-hand column keeps dropping to the bottom of the left-hand one. I've checked that the right-hand margin on the left column is wide enough, that the right column isn't clearing anything, etc., I *think*.
Any suggestions are appreciated!

Freeware/Open-Source HTML editor?
Date: 03/20/07
Keywords: html, web
I remember once using an HTML editor that had a very handy feature - it would automatically indent or outdent lines based on the HTML being used.
For instance, if you typed and hit the Enter key, it would auto-indent the next line. Then, when you were done typing a paragraph, went to the next line, and typed
, it would auto-outdent the line to be aligned with the opening paragraph tag.
I believe this same text editor I was using allowed collapsing and expanding blocks of code (e.g. everything between paragraph or DIV tags). I figured out that UltraEdit-32 v.11+ has this feature, but I can't find the auto indent/outdent feature anywhere.
I've looked at UltraEdit-32 v.10, CoffeeCup HTML Free, PSPad, NotePad++, EditPad Lite, TextPad, and even Dreamweaver MX 2004's code view (blech). I'm having no luck anywhere.
Does anyone here know what I'm talking about? Do you know of a text editor that has this feature? Am I just insane? Is my memory slipping?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Flash help: text being cut-off
Date: 03/19/07
Keywords: web
I am new to Flash - took a class in it this quarter but things are still new and confusing...
I am making a quick placeholder flash intro for a website I'm building. It isn't permanent (so pardon the colors and the general lack of design), but I'm having the weirdest bug. My text gets cut off in odd places, but only when it's uploaded to a server. On my computer, viewed with the Flash player, as well as in Flash when I created the movie, it looks fine.
The file has been uploaded to: http://www.calpoly.edu/~tosborn/flash-intro.swf
I tried adding a different font but then it got the bottom half cut-off. I haven't recreated the file yet because I have no idea why this is happening and how I could avoid it the next time it occurs.
Can anyone help a flash newbie? Thanks!

How would I do this?
Date: 03/17/07
Keywords: hosting
Hey guys.
I have a domain that has a hell of a lot of free space on it and in registering a new project I want to do I really don't need hosting considering the amount of space and bandwith I have left with this other site. However, I don't want to use a cloak or redirect or frames to a subdomain on my current site for the new domain, I want the new domain to point to a subdomain on my current host as if the subdomain were the server hosting my new domain. Sorry if that sounds a bit messy I'm not entirely sure how to explain myself (as clearly, I'm hoping somebody will actually know what they are talking about and help me out here).
Basically, I think I'm trying to say can I set up a new DNS on my current host for a separate domain to be hosted on, a little like if I were going to partition my hard drive?
For anybody who can decipher my confused request, my currenty hosting plan that I wish to make use of bandwidth on is godaddy economy, if this helps.
I'm wondering if the alias / DNS options may be where I can make what I want happen in the control panel, but quite simply, I'm not sure.

table question
Date: 03/16/07
Keywords: css
Let's say I'm just now making the leap to CSS layout, but I have a site using tables, for now.
OK, so I have a table in there, but when resizing the type to a rather large size, the table grows, even though it's fixed width. Am I on crack? Is there any way to stop the table from growing?
I am mostly concerned with the table thing, but comments are welcome. This place-holder site will be redesigned (with better portfolio navigation), probably within the year.

Hi everyone,
Im a long time stalker of this community and I need some assistance with actionscripting.
I want the below slideshow to load ALL the pictures at once, not just one by one. Its loading through an XML file. Here is the AS:
delay = 3500;
//-----------------------
function loadXML(loaded) {
if (loaded) {
xmlNode = this.firstChild;
image = [];
description = [];
total = xmlNode.childNodes.length;
for (i=0; i image[i] = xmlNode.childNodes[i].childNodes[0].firstChild.nodeValue;
description[i] = xmlNode.childNodes[i].childNodes[1].firstChild.nodeValue;
}
firstImage();
} else {
content = "file not loaded!";
}
}
xmlData = new XML();
xmlData.ignoreWhite = true;
xmlData.onLoad = loadXML;
xmlData.load("images.xml");
/////////////////////////////////////
p = 0;
this.onEnterFrame = function() {
filesize = picture.getBytesTotal();
loaded = picture.getBytesLoaded();
preloader._visible = true;
if (loaded != filesize) {
preloader.preload_bar._xscale = 100*loaded/filesize;
} else {
preloader._visible = false;
if (picture._alpha<100) {
picture._alpha += 10;
}
}
};
function nextImage() {
if (p<(total-1)) {
p++;
if (loaded == filesize) {
picture._alpha = 0;
picture.loadMovie(image[p], 1);
desc_txt.text = description[p];
picture_num();
slideshow();
}
}
}
function prevImage() {
if (p>0) {
p--;
picture._alpha = 0;
picture.loadMovie(image[p], 1);
desc_txt.text = description[p];
picture_num();
}
}
function firstImage() {
if (loaded == filesize) {
picture._alpha = 0;
picture.loadMovie(image[0], 1);
desc_txt.text = description[0];
picture_num();
slideshow();
}
}
function picture_num() {
current_pos = p+1;
pos_txt.text = current_pos+" / "+total;
}
function slideshow() {
myInterval = setInterval(pause_slideshow, delay);
function pause_slideshow() {
clearInterval(myInterval);
if (p == (total-1)) {
p = 0;
firstImage();
} else {
nextImage();
}
}
}
Any help is appreciated, thanks

scheduling
Date: 03/16/07

how do you schedule your projects? often times i will write proposals and then not hear from the client for 2 months and then they'll want to go forward. but in the meantime, i've got other projects that had a quicker response time and have accepted those projects instead. i don't want to put off my clients, but i'm looking for a better way of scheduling projects. do you hold blocks of time for people for a limited time? if you don't hear from them within a certain period of time, do you then move on and schedule another project in it's place? how do you deal with the client that you've bumped? do you mention that a proposal as a limited time frame?
