Any good refernce for CSS + Javascript beginners?
Date: 04/13/07
Keywords: css, html, java
Hey,
I need help in finding a good book to learn CSS and Javascript. Up to now I've been creating my homepages in plain html style (using tables and frames, etc.). But now I want to learn to deal with CSS as well. I already searched amazon.com and amazon.de, but I have no idea which books are good and which are not.
So how did you learn those two languages?
Any help would be appreciated...

Fatal Error: Argh!
Date: 04/13/07
Keywords: php, html
I'm building a site for a friend's basketball league in Joomla. I'm trying to make a certain component work. Part of the problem is that most of the "league manager" components are written in foreign languages. This particular one is fairly new and the documentation is sparse at best. I found another great component, but the creator isn't interested in sharing it, but that's another story.
Anyway, the problem: The test site is at: jeffs.originalsteves.com
I created a menu item to link to the component (item: League Manager) but when you click on the menu all that returns is:
Fatal error: Call to a member function getName() on a non-object in /home/steve/public_html/jeffs/components/com_leagueman/leagueman.roundresult.php on line 20
I'm no php whiz, so I am completely stuck on this. I've created a half dozen Joomla sites and not run across this problem. Obviously, it's in the component, but I don't know anything else.
Line 20 of that file says:
$mainframe->setPageTitle($roundresult->getProject()->getName() . ": " . $roundresult->getRound()->getName());
Can anyone help me with this?

Drop Down Menus, javascript
Date: 04/13/07
Keywords: web
I'm not very knowledgable with js at all but I'm trying. I've copied some script from a downloaded thing which works on my computer but not on the website. I can't work out what's wrong. This is a little section of it. The problem is that when I put the mouse on the Introduction title, the dropdown menu doesn't show.
If anyone can help I'd be extremely grateful.
P.S. Perhaps, I've put all the coding in the wrong place. I will add more if what there is isn't sufficient.

IP address keeping

Hello folks, any quick suggestions on how you can track user IP addresses to your site? I am fiddling with some simple PHP code that currently tells the user what his IP address is, but I want it to I guess forward that on to me...
Also bit thanks to sexfest for helping me out with displaying flash to users with flash or an image otherwise. That swfobject code worked, and I'm no expert.

Domains
Date: 04/10/07
Keywords: no keywords
I've gotten to the point where I have enough domains that it will be cheaper to get a package of multiple domains. (Have I seen these called domain reseller accounts?) So far I've found DNS Made Easy who offer 10 domains for $29.95/yr. This is a good deal for me because I'm up to 5 domains at $5.99/yr each, so I won't be spending any more money, but the next 5 domains I get will be practically free.
Can anyone recommend anything better around this price range?

Web Hosting: Providers Needed With A Little Muscle
Date: 04/07/07
Keywords: web, hosting
Many of us have seen and even used a lot of those ultra cheap web hosting companies that offer so many megabytes of storage and so many gigs of traffic per-month. I don't design sites too often, but when I do, such hosting companies are fine for my clients, who tend to use the domains merely as advertising platforms and digital brochures.
Recently, I have received a client who requires a little more than that, and I need to be sure the host I pair her with can handle more than the usual "forgotten planet" traffic. Server space for images will be required, and she may or may not offer occasional streaming videos. In the event you're wondering, this project is related to 'adult entertainment,' but it's not a porn site.
I will have little problem with building the code for this client, but hosting speed and reliability is an important factor, obviously. This is somewhat new territory for me.
So, my question: considering the above requirements, I was wondering if any users here might know of a hosting company that would be more reliable than the average "here's my cat's website" grade provider. I'm trying to keep the costs low but optimize the most performance I can. Services like Bluehost or Lunar Pages and so on seem affordable enough, but can they provide a site that can load fast and reliably and handle a medium amount of traffic?
Your opinions, shared experiences or suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hi folks,
I'm relatively new to web design (dreaded words) and am having a problem with white #ffffff disappearing from a div tag withdefined box a #whtbkgd tag on z-layer 1. There are div tag defined objects above it on z-layers 2-10.
The body style background is defined as #aaaaaa.
The white box is disappearing and the grey aaaaaa page fill is showing through. All the objects in layers 2-10 also have #ffffff white defined as their background colour.
Any ideas as to what I should be doing or looking for in order to get the whtbkgd box to display properly? I also want to float it centred on the page, but haven't got that far with the WYWIWG (Dreamweaver) editor yet.
It was behaving beautifully as tables, but the extended page designs need to be CSS so that to allow for more flexible page and copy arrangements. This website is for a colour retoucher and is mostly images.

that time again - please look at my site
Date: 04/04/07
Keywords: cms, blogging, web, hosting
hello again designer pals
i have redesigned my website. not just any redesign - i implemented wordpress as a CMS this time. it is very exciting. now, i can add and remove work from my portfolio much more easily. i am hosting all of my images at flickr, to increase traffic to both my flickr account and to my portfolio site. each portfolio piece is a wordpress "page" - which are as easy to manage as blog posts. and on that note, the site also includes a blog now. i don't plan on using it for true blogging, but for any major news updates and periodic photo displays. all of my content is managed dynamically through wordpress and it really wasn't that hard to put together. i think using wordpress as a CMS shows a certain amount of web dev credibility so that was my main motivation for using it, but it is truly way more convenient.
the visual design is not as bold as the site i currently have up, but i find it to be unobtrusive and a little moody in a good way. i have yet to feel the need to create a logo for myself so the header is very simple. i might swap out the background image randomly each time the page loads, but that will probably be too distracting. a better idea would be to change the background image once a month or so.
i'm looking for any kind of feedback - and please be as honest as possible. i'm trying to find a job in amsterdam which is what prompted this overhaul . . .
this is my current site: http://www.jessicamullen.com
this is the new wordpress site: http://www.jessicamullen.com/cms
compare and contrast? love or hate? thank you everyone.

let's get semantic
Date: 04/04/07
Keywords: programming, css, html, java, web
hello again buddies. thanks for the class feedback. and now a new question:
i design websites and i create them with CSS, HTML, javascript, a little server side, a little flash, etc.
that makes me a web developer right? i don't really understand if there are formal definitions for "web designer", "web developer", or "web programmer". i'm just working on my website and i don't know if i should say "HTML and CSS programming" or "HTML and CSS development". i think development sounds better. but does development imply information architecture too? i don't always do that . . . does it make sense to say "Flash programming" and "CSS development"?
thoughts?
also, i always say i use HTML, not XHTML, when in reality i am using XHTML. does this matter?

I'd like to set up a newsletter and have people subscribe.
I've got a couple of issues ready.
But I'm not sure how to create an opt-in script for my visitors.
Could someone point me in the right direction to do this? I want to create a simple Opt-In script perhaps with their name, and email address.
I've just never done this before so I'm not sure what's the right way to do it.
Thanks

Basic Question on Logging
Date: 04/03/07
Keywords: web
I think this is possibly the community to go for this question I'm not entirely sure
I want to make a website but I'd like to be able to get an idea of where the traffic is coming from
it's for a basic selling site and from the get go it would be nice to know who to cater to area wise and what not or if any specific additions should be added (languages, etc)
I'm fairly certain you can't tell exactly the person and that's fine, but is it possible to tell the state or country?
If so what type of criteria do I need to look for in a host to be able to find these facts, or is this just a general thing all hosts provide and me not having any web knowledge am completely ignorant about
Thanks for any help whatsoever

Anyone here ever use Google Maps API?
Date: 04/03/07
Keywords: html
I'm a designer who needs a little bit of help with these maps.
I have the beginnings of a map here:
http://www.trailcon.com/map.html
I need to be able to displace a logo or picture and links inside the info windows. I also need to be able to change the marker so that there are 3 different sorts. I think I can handle that part, but the links and pics in the info window are giving me a headache.
I'm not really a programmer.
If anyone can help me figure out this code, please let me know.

your best class?

hey everyone
i'm going to be teaching for the first time starting in may. it's a one month, university level CSS web development class. i'm trying to put together the syllabus right now and wanted to ask your opinions.
if you've ever taken a CSS/web design/development class, what did you like about it? what didn't you like? did the instructor do anything particularly remarkable?
if you've never taken a web dev class before, do you have any input from other classes you've taken? what works and what sucks?
thank you . . . xposted to graphicdesign

php weather questions

i've found a great script here:
http://balidwipa.com/weather/index.php
the script itself seems kind of complicated and i'm trying to get it to only output the current condition's image code (i.e. 31.gif, 32.gif)
i've tried hacking at it myself but when i do the script itself doesn't seem to update. this mornign when i went to check it still had the nighttime/moon image on my server.
would anybody mind taking a look at the code? any ideas?
is there a better way to be able to get my weather updates and output the image in the standard format that most docks us as well? (1.gif 2.gif 3.gif etc)
5.gif =
