1. Appleseed progress update.

    Date: 01/14/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've released 0.2.1 beta of Appleseed (open source MySpace/Friendster), check it out at appleseed.sourceforge.net.

Also, I've set up a test site:

    www.appleseedproject.org

If you want an invite, leave a comment on this post with your email address and I'll send you one. Serious testers only, this site won't really be fun until it gets out of beta.

  2. anyone here use yahoo small business' webhosting?

    Date: 01/13/06     Keywords: no keywords

just curious if i did something amazingly wrong today or if the servers on their end are just being super super slow today.

sometimes when i'm loading a page, it takes a bit of time to open and then doesn't even load properly (it won't apply the stylesheet, images won't load, it'll forget an .inc file, etc). but if i refresh then things will look perfectly normal.

i wouldn't be that concerned but they actually want this site going live tomorrow and i don't want it to break down on me.

edit: looking at the source of a misloaded page, it started off with the closing of the head tag, which means it totally ignored loading the include tag that adds all the stylesheets, meta information, and so on. yet then the next time it did load it. then another time it did all things fine but didn't include the include file that has the banner ad in it.

    arggggggh.

edit II: the problem was 100% the fact that i had absolute links instead of root relative links. woops?

  4. W3C compliance

    Date: 01/12/06     Keywords: web

I'm the webmaster for my local city government. Because it's a government site, we have to have something that's W3C complaint, or "handicap accessible," if you will. Right now there's a text-only version of the site. However, it's horribly out of date, and quite frankly, it's a pain in the ass. What'd love to be able to do is just modify the main site, cityoffrederick.com, to be complaint, and then can the text-only site.

I've done a lot of reading up on making websites w3c complaint (alt tags for images, good color contrast, etc.), but I guess I'm still not sure exactly what I'm getting into. The site doesn't have a lot of pictures, the design is really very basic, and I use Dreamweaver MX. The layout is done in tables, and I have no idea if that messes up accessiblity or not.

So, my question is, based on what I have to work with, does it make sense to go through and modify each page (there's hundreds of 'em), OR would that be SO much work (or so out of reach based on the current design) that I might as well revise the text-only site and keep that going? I don't mind a lot of "one-time" work to bring the main site up to speed if it means getting rid of the text-only. I guess I'm just not entirely sure whether that's possible with the curent layout and all the tables.

  6. No more hiding the address bar in the new IE

    Date: 01/11/06     Keywords: java, spyware

I've been reading through the IE blog which documents the new developments that are being made for the release of IE7. While I was reading some of the older entries, I came across this little snippet.

"We think the address bar is also important for users to see in pop-up windows. A missing address bar creates a chance for a fraudster to forge an address of their own. To help thwart that, IE7 will show the address bar on all internet windows to help users see where they are. IE7 will also help users avoid fraudulent sites if users choose to use the Phishing Filter to check a site for known phishing activity."

Personally I use JavaScript to hide the Address bar when I create a popup for a picture. But I wonder if it will be possible to do this when IE7 is released. A part of me likes the idea for all the spyware popups I get if I use IE but aesthetically I like removing the address bar for picture popups.

    What do you think?

  10. Book recommendations / Web Hosting Recommendations

Date: 01/11/06     Keywords: php, css, java, web, hosting

I'm looking for some really good web design books. I've been spending some time at the bookstores lately looking through what they have, and there seem to be a lot of books out there, but I'm not sure which ones are good and which ones aren't. What I'm looking for are some in depth CSS, PHP, and Javascript books that are thorough and easy to understand. I'm also open to any other books you guys could suggest to help improve my skills. I can't afford to take classes right now, and I really learn best on my own so, I figured this would be a good way to go. Also, any good websites out there are fine too.

Now onto the second question.. and I'm sure it's been asked several times so, thanks for any responses.

I'm currently set up with web hosting through Aussiehosts. I've been there for about 3 years now, and when I first got set up I was really pleased with it. I pay about $38 a year for 200MB of disk space (which I'm currently using about 477MB). The company was recently bought out, and I have not been happy with it lately. Email is my biggest problem. Half the time I can't even login to my email, and then when I do I can't actually send any emails. I'm considering moving elsewhere, but I have NO IDEA what some good, affordable web hosts are. I found this one by way of a friend. I've been looking around at different companies, but they all seem to be kind of expensive. I'd like to stay somewhere near that price range, but I'd also like to have more disk space which means I'll need to pay more. So, any suggestions?

Thanks for all your help guys!

  12. Cheap dedication from the States :)

    Date: 01/11/06     Keywords: no keywords

Fasthosts is brilliant, you can pick up a dedicated server for less than £50. We have several. There's even a '[info]'fasthostsstatus status syndication account on LJ for me to watch.

Fasthosts is in the UK, though.

I want an American version of Fasthosts. That's the catch. I want somewhere that offers cheap dedicated servers. We want the ability to do whatever the heck we want with a Windows server. :)

    Any suggestions?

  14. Align Graphics Vertically

    Date: 01/11/06     Keywords: browser

If I create a single celled table on a page and tell it to be 100% height and 100% width and then center the graphic inside it should (in theory) stay exactly centered no matter what size the browser window, right? But the height attribute "100%" doesn't seem to be recognised by a whole bunch of browsers (it just defaults to the height of the graphic, pushing it to the top of the page), so how do I get the graphic to automatically center on the page? Is there a simple tag that will align a graphic on a page vertically without it being within a table cell?

Sorry if this is a really dumb question...but I can't seem to find a simple solution ;)
