1. CSS problem

    Date: 08/09/05     Keywords: css, web

    I am having some problems setting up a website using CSS. Below I put the code for two divs, one above the other. For some reason, the second will not span the entire width of the screen in Windows IE6. It goes almost all the way and then stops. I've had this same problem on other websites too. Any advice? Thanks!!!!

    div.top

      {

      text-align: center;

      position: absolute;

      top: 0;

      left: 0;

      width: 100%;

      height: 227px;

      }

    div.top2

      {

      background-color: #A2A09D;

      text-align: center;

      line-height: 1;

      position: absolute;

      top: 227px;

      left: 0;

      width: 100%;

      height: 155px;

      }

    Someone said they might like to see how to do the PHP Style Switcher, so I finally got around to writing a tutorial. It's here. It was written in a hurry, if anyone has questions, just let me know. To date I've seen 3 website besides my own that use this technique.

  3. Frustrated with BBClone and other web trackers....

    Date: 08/09/05     Keywords: php, html, web, tracker

    I have tried to get BBClone to work with our (.shtml-page format based) website, and it's proving more and more frustrating than productive. It will be perfect once our redesign is complete and PHP is integrated...but for now, I can't seem to get it working properly.

    Our server has a full-on web tracker program already installed for most tracking needs, but I am in need of a simple program that can track and count hits for a "Top 10 visited stories" feature we need to run & update weekly.

    If anyone has experience in a newspaper/journalism website formats with a program/counter like I am needing...info or help would be much appreciated!

  5. Estimate Cost

    Date: 08/07/05     Keywords: programming, html

    How much do you think this site cost to design and develop? In other words, what might you charge and how long do you think it would take? Please estimate with the assumption that the programming for the apps (job search, registration, application, etc.) was already done. All the designer was responsible for was creating the look and feel, and developing the HTML around the code blocks for the apps.

  6. blogging alternatives...

    Date: 08/05/05     Keywords: cms, blogging, software

    I wrote this blog post about how I hate blogs (ironic?). It was a little more than that, I was actually talking/thinking about how a lot of content is put into a blogging format... content that could be best delivered other ways.

    Usually when I vomit out ideas, I generally find that I'm well behind the curve. Thus, I was wondering... does anyone know of CMS software that exists that is taylored for E-Zines or an Essay Archive similar to the stuff I'd posted about?

  9. back with another newspaper website enhancement item!

    Date: 08/04/05     Keywords: web

    [Error: Irreparable invalid markup ('') in entry. Owner must fix manually. Raw contents below.]

    Hello, back again with another information request. Thanks to for the wonderful suggestion on the last problem.

    The feature I am looking to add will generate weekly reports on which stories/links are accessed the most from the website. I will feature a link to a listing of each week's "Top Stories" including the links to all of the corresponding top-10 "most popular" stories.

    Is there a script to make this function possible? Or maybe something that can be installed in our server itself to keep track of this info, and allow me to pull it off the server as needed?

    (I noticed that my server has statistic capabilities, but only to the extent of paths taken through the website, top keywords searched for, and so on....nothing specific about stories accessed.)

    Thanks for any information!

  12. javascript help...

    Date: 08/03/05     Keywords: html, java, google

    Having a brain freeze, sorry.

    I'm trying to make it so that a parent window opens a new child window (full size, no pop up shennanigans!) and then closes itself - the parent is a snap to fit, and the child would be a full size because they've moved to a new section of the site.

    so far, my code looks thusly :

    < a href="javascript:window.open('http://pagehere.html', ' '); window.opener.close( );" >

    which, as you might guess since I'm asking you guys...isn't working. and everything I google is telling me that I can't close the parent window...any suggestions?

    ETA : Sorry, I keep forgetting they invalidated the < pre> code on LJ.

  13. Good looking message boards

    Date: 08/03/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi there. I have to create a message board / discussion forum for a health care fraud community.

    Can you give me some examples of good looking message boards?

    Don't want anything too clunky like those message boards on craigslist. It has to have a classy feel for professionals and be very easy to use. It'd also help if it matched my logo

    Thanks!

    Hey all i recently asked for help getting a form to update into outlook all the desired content from the forms subject box and the forms body .

    SUBJECT:
    INFORMATION:

    The problem is that when u submit and all the content is put into outlook all the spaces in the sentences are filled with "+" symbols.

    Any one know how to make them stop appearing or a diffrent way to make the form update into outlook?

    I was also hoping to find a way that i could have text all ready present in the body area of the form like contact number.. and the person would simply have to fill in the information where it says.

    My real concern is getting rid of the "+" signs.

    Thanx in advance

  15. question: rotating ad script/database for newspaper employment classifieds: "Top Jobs" style

    Date: 08/03/05     Keywords: html, database, web, yahoo

    Hello, I am a long-time lurker to this community and have always found the advice given to other quite helpful in my webmastering/design endevors. I work for a local newspaper running their website, and have a small issue that I could really use some helpful advice on.
    Any fingers pointing in the right direction would be much appreciated!

    The newspaper website I run is looking to do some major much-needed updating, and implementing a "Top Jobs" database option is one of them. Much in the light of larger websites like Yahoo Hot Jobs, and even smaller newspaper websites such as Lawrence-Journal World (Kansas), we are looking to have some kind of rotating script/database that will pull randomly from our uploaded employment classifieds and display links to these ads on several pages of the website (in the designated "Top Jobs" display box that will be created and placed on these pages).

    I am really lost on even how to begin this project, as it was most recently presented to me that this Top Jobs section should include ALL of the employment ads posted (which can number over 300 at times), and rotate them on a normal basis so that each one has airtime, several times a day. Doing all of this by hand would take DAYS!

    What I believe we need is a server side internal database with a perl script written that would automatically pull these ads off the .shtml pages created for the employment classifieds. If you have any info on how to go about obtaining this, or know any information on how to even go about doing this (assuming I am incorrect)....please let me know!

    I would be very greatful!

  16. IE6 clipping bug.

    Date: 08/03/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I was redesigning my altblog, and I noticed an annoying IE bug; everything after a blockquote containing lists in it gets skewed a few pictures off to the left, out of the div, and disappears. That is;

    • blah
    I've done some experimenting, and the problem seems to be related to the padding attribute in the ".entry blockquote" part of the stylesheet. The full code, as a TXT file, is here. Please help.

    Date: 08/02/05     Keywords: css

    So I just came across this at Slashdot right now and figured maybe some of you would like to see it (if you haven't already).

    Standards and CSS in IE

    I'm not seeing many of the IE bugs on there that have been making me bang my head against the desk lately, but it's good to know that they're at least going to try to fix some things and support CSS a little better.
