1. login, user accounts, etc.

Date: 08/01/05     Keywords: php, css, html, java, web

    Hi,
Sorry this is probably a rather dumb question but...
So I've been doing web design for quite some time now, using the basic design languages, html, css, dhtml, php, java. But I think I've kind of come up with an idea finally, a good idea, for a hopefully profitable website!
But one of the problems is, I need to be able to have users who can sign up and create their own accounts, such as signing up on LJ or Deviantart and getting your own page.
But I'm not exactly sure how to start creating such a thing. What language do I need to learn in order to accomplish that? so they'd have their accounts on a sub domain in essance. www.webpage.com/username
I've thought about using phpnuke or a forum based site but it just wouldn't work for my idea. I like Deviantart's setup. I would need something similiar to what they've got.
Thanks for reading my dumb question, I hope someone knows what I need.

  2. WOO!

Date: 07/30/05     Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web

About a week ago I made a post asking for references on PHP because I had just interviewed for a job at a web design firm and my lack of PHP knowledge was one of the things holding me down. Well, like I said, I spent all weekend studying PHP (thanks for all the references everyone!) and tearing apart existing PHP scripts until I was able to write my own scripts without using any reference. By Tuesday I had written a blog system using PHP and MySQL (complete with login authentication using sessions, add, edit and delete entries, and add or remove posters on the system, plus much much more...which, I'm pretty sure you would agree is a pretty easy task, but having only started learning PHP three days prior, I'm quite proud of myself).

Anyway, I went in for the second interview on Wednesday this week and showed them what I had accomplished over the four days between interviews.

This morning I got a call from them offering the job to me :o) I start on the 15th.

Anyway, I just wanted to thank everyone for hooking me up with the PHP references.

  3. help?

    Date: 07/29/05     Keywords: web

I finally have a design ready for creating my portfolio site.

Thumbnails of my work would take the place of the small boxes, and when you click on a thumbnail, the image would appear in the larger area, with a description of that piece beneath that.

The problem is that I don't know where to start. I haven't made a website in over a year and my mind is a complete blank. In the past I would have sliced this up in ImageReady, taken it into Dreamweaver, and gone from there. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks.

  4. basic html editors for macs?

    Date: 07/29/05     Keywords: html

    Hi
I am taking an HTML hand-coding class and we are working on PCs at school and using notepad and a simple HTML editor that shows it in colors so you can make sure your code is correct. Does anyone know of a good editor like that for macs? I know 97% of the world's population uses pc's so I should code on pcs... so you can skip the lecture. I just want to practice on my powerbook so I'd love to download a (preferably freeware or shareware at least) program for that. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

  5. Internet Explorer 7: Beta 1

Date: 07/29/05     Keywords: rss, browser, css

Most of you are probably curious about the upcoming IE 7. Will it make our lives easier? Will it liken itself to current browsers? Will it take our headaches away, or mute them quite a bit.

Apparently, yes, yes it will. IE 7 will reportedly catch up to here and now, and remain a current, strong browser... from what I've read and the developers have said.

I will preface everything following this with a warning. This release IS NOT (I repeat - IS NOT) meant for public/consumer/everyday designer use. It is very unfinished, very rough, and only for professional developers who have test machines to use and reformat anytime they like. The more-polished, finished version is coming in the next few months in the form of Beta 2 or 3, or Release Candidate 1.

That said, you may come across the first beta of the new browser.

Here are some very important points to keep in mind:

    • This is the first beta, not a release candidate.
    • The public beta is still on its way, probably after Beta 2 is released later this summer.
    • It was released to MSDN subscribers for the purpose of IT professionals and developers review and co-development only.
    • It was not intended for public/consumer usage/review. Especially this early in beta with many bugs and unpolished features.
    • It was only released through MSDN, and unless you have a $99 minimum subscription, you won't get it in a way that's meant for you.
      • You can, however, find this through other means.
    • Once you install it, it cannot be uninstalled as it updates system files. Remember? Early beta with rough, unpolished features.
    • Make sure you have your stuff backed up!
    • You must have Windows XP with SP2 installed, and it must be validated as "genuine." (As in, it's your product key, not someone else's.)

Now, for those of you who do install IE 7 Beta 1, there are a few other important things to know:

    • Many features are not in this beta version. They will be implemented in the next beta. (Read this whitepaper for the info.)
    • Many/most CSS improvements (CSS 2 anyone?), full 32-bit PNG support, RSS features are not in this version, but will be in Beta 2.
    • Don't bitch about it if you haven't read that whitepaper. Many questions are answered in that whitepaper.
    • It is unfinished, unpolished, and buggy! Be warned. It was not meant for you (ie: everyday designer/developer), just professionals that have testing machines.

Now, again, for those of you who have installed Beta 1, enjoy. There are lots of promising things in it, the interface has changed quite a bit, and as you can see, there are tabs, RSS support, enhanced printing controls, loads of privacy controls (you can clear all cache, history, cookies, and anything "private" by one menu item.)

Things are not quite finished yet, you can't move the address bar or search bar or other menu items until the next beta.

    Trillian users, listen up!

    • Installing Internet Explorer Beta 1 breaks Trillian! (Remember, it wasn't meant for you, just developers on testing machines!)
    • To fix this problem, you must disable Trillian from loading its MSN Messenger plugin.
    • To do this, go to your Trillian directory, the plugins directory, and rename "msn.dll" to something else, like "msn.dll.deactivated."
    • Trillian will now work properly, sans MSN Messenger.

For those of you who want to wait, you should wait. Unless you absolutely must see an unfinished, unpolished, buggy browser that won't be put back together at least until the next beta or the public Release Candidate, then wait. Remember, you cannot uninstall this once you install it. You've been warned!

  9. position a div in front a shockwave element?

    Date: 07/27/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have an embedded shockwave (not Flash) element on a page. The design calls for some transparent layout elements in front of it but the Shockwave always appears on top of everything else.

I know this can be solved by changing "wmode" in Flash but i cant find anything for shockwave. Any ideas?

  13. PHP, style-switching, and the fearful redesign...

Date: 07/26/05     Keywords: php, html, java, web

Hello all. I just redesigned my website in PHP and I have to mention that PHP is awesome.

So now I'm asking you all to test my site... (give it a refresh just in case). Let me know what works and what doesn't... such as:

    - Does the style switching work? Can you navigate without losing the style?
    - Does it look bad with Javascript disabled? btw, all the javascript will be gone really soon, as soon as I can rewrite the scripts in PHP.
    - Is there anything that doesn't work right?
    - Is anyone interested in finding out how some of this is done? I'll probably make a tutorial soon, since you can't just view the source to see the php.

Also, I have a really important question... how do you guys deal with page cache? I change stuff really often and I don't want anything to get cached, but the meta tags "expire" and "no-cache" don't eliminate caching entirely. IE has a bug where it will cache stuff it sees after the meta tags, and there is a hack to prevent that, but the hack is not xhtml compliant... what I am looking for is a fully xhtml compliant technique.

    Thanks in advance!

  14. good tree navigation?

    Hi all!

  15. Dreamweaver replacement?

    Date: 07/25/05     Keywords: asp, web

I use dreamweaver to create my web pages, but I prefer coding by hand over creating nasty mark up so I only use the coding aspect of the program. I like how it color codes the text and displays the line numbers on the left side. Does anyone know about a good free text editor that does these two things? I would just like to use something that is smaller and faster.

  16. Adobe Photoshop CS for $99???

    Date: 07/25/05     Keywords: software

Hey guys, I was just at Worth1000.com and there's an advertisement at the top for Adobe and Macromedia products Buyusa.com.. as in Creative Suite $199 and Studio MX (including Flash) for $99.

Surely these prices can't be real? But Worth1000 has a good reputation, I can't imagine them putting something dodgy on their site.. has anyone had any experiences with them?

I'm blown away with these prices. They sound like they're new, but have they fallen off the back of a truck?

At these prices, I'd be seriously thinking about updating my software!

  18. Need Web Designer

Date: 07/23/05     Keywords: html, web, yahoo

    Hi,

I'm currently looking for a web designer for my new business website. I'm looking for a relatively simple website, probably only html. I might also eventually be looking for a programmer, but for now I'm only looking for web design.

My email address is moodyaardvark@yahoo.com. If you're interested, please email me there saying so, along with the URLs of a few websites you've worked on. I will then email you more information, along with most of the content for that website. Once you receive all the information, and that I've answered the questions that you may have, please send me a quote of the approximate time and cost.

Thank you! I'm looking forward to working with you (whoever you are)!

  19. CSS problem

    Date: 07/23/05     Keywords: css

I'm currently working on a site and I've discovered this bizarre little bug. I have two css stylesheets that I'm referencing in this page. One is for the main elements and the other style sheet will change the colours of those main elements depending upon the page that you are viewing. Now here is the bizarre thing.

Since many of the same properties are only going to have a colour change I have them all grouped together. Here is an example (and actually the list is a lot longer but I'm just giving you an idea) :

    body#products .content_title, body#products .sec_bold, body#products a.side_bar_nav:link
    {
    color: #9C2722;
    }

This works perfect in IE but when I view it in firefox it won't read the colour. Now if I define them all separately it works but that would make my css sheet huge when I think I should be able to combine the properties.

Here is the site that I'm working on.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

  20. One Stop Resource

Date: 07/23/05     Keywords: css, html, asp, web

    Alright, new idea.

Since It's come to my attention that I need a great deal more knowledge in web-based "things" than I thought, I'm starting this. I assume lots others are in my boat. I sit here and make sites trying to be as artistic and creative as possible. Unfortunatly for me, I know nothing of accessability, table-less design, valid-HTML techniques, or anything like that. On the "technical" end of things, I'm quite the newbie. All I know is HTML, a SMALL amount of CSS, ASP with dreamweaver's help, and uhh... thats it pretty much. I'm totally in the dark when It comes to making sites without dreamweaver, flash, and fireworks... and still making the site look appealing.

So here's my idea. I need resources teaching me how to build better sites. I need sites teaching me how to make sites more accessable to disabled viewers, how to get away from poor HTML coding, the best ways to make table-less web sites... I need the works. Like I said before, I assume lots of people are in this boat with me. So I figure that all you experts out there can reply to this thread with some resources you use frequently, and wish to share with me/us, and all the designers out there can bookmark this thread for future use. Get me?

I posted a while back asking about CSS use for table-less sites, and got terrific replies. I still have that bookmarked.

Excuse the lofty request, but I want to learn!

Instead of googling all this, I figure lots of people on this forum can offer great resources... you have before.

Thanks in advance, to anyone who contributes.

    :)
