1. Possible web development job/need to learn PHP

Date: 07/23/05     Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web

Yesterday I had an interview at a great web design firm here. The interview went great, and I'm going back in on Tuesday for a second interview. One of the only things that was a "negative mark" for me was that I don't know how to code in PHP (I know, I know..."get with the times dumbass!"), however, I learn incredibly fast and I decided after the interview that I would make sure I have a solid understanding of the language before I go into the second interview on Tuesday.

I spent all day yesterday reading books and web sites about PHP and MySQL and I'm already able to write relatively simple scripts without relying on references. What I'm looking for now are web sites that have something more intermediate that I could try my hand at (as opposed to the basic lessons most websites give...which are typically based around the same concepts). I've found that I usually learn better when I get the basics of a language down and then jump into stuff a bit over my head...struggling makes me try harder and helps things stick in my head.

Anyone know of a website or two with good, advanced PHP lessons?

  2. the power of Furl

Date: 07/22/05     Keywords: browser, css, web

I'd like to go over a new site content management system I've developed with the help of Furl

A bit of explanation of what Furl is and how it works

Furl is a server-side bookmark manager, similiar to that of del.icio.us or any other number of similar tools. These sites work by assigning you a bookmarklet that you place in your browser toolbar. In the example of Furl, everytime you come across a site which you find interesting and would normally bookmark via your browser's bookmarking function, you instead click on the Furl bookmarklet. You are then taken to an area of the Furl website which saves the interesting website you wanted to bookmark on the Furl server. To access all of these "furled" sites you've saved, you just need to go to furl.net and log in with your username and password. You will be taken to your ever expanding archive of websites that you've furled. I've been using Furl for a while now and have 572 things saved at the moment. One other thing to mention is that during the setup of your Furl account, you can select options to have your list of furled websites be viewable by other members of furl, which I will touch on later.

Now for the cool things you can do with Furl

When furling websites, you can organize everything by topic. So far, I mainly use two topics: default and useful. You can add new topics on the fly as well.

On unhappymeal.net you are basically looking at the topics I mentioned earlier. The Furl website has instructions for adding code to your own website which will generate a list of your furled items. You just specify which topics you would like to display, formatting such as date and comments, and how many items are displayed at once. Furl spits out the code you will need, and you can just paste it into the code of your website. You can even use CSS to style the formatting of the furled items.

I've made topics such as "halloween" and "easter" as well, which are not displayed on unhappymeal.net at the moment, but with only a few code changes I can display them at the right time of the year.

I find that creating a website with my furled items to be far more satisfying than if I had just made my furled items public. You would have to look at the list of websites I've furled on the furl website itself along with it's own formatting otherwise. I guess it's partially about control, and partially that I'm constantly finding new stuff at a rate which would warrant a website to display all the content.

  5. Everyone, check this out

Date: 07/22/05     Keywords: css, html, asp, web

Due to the recent events which transpired in a recent post of mine (which I'm sure you've all read through by now), and also the recent outcry for or against usability, table-less css sites, and everyone aspiring for perfectly valid HTML sites... I've decided to post this link I found last night. I think its worth a look. Please don't think I'm anti-usability, pro-tables, and pro-crappy HTML. My point is that people harp and harp on these issues way more than they should... IMHO.

    Quotes:

"Mystical belief in the power of Web Standards, Usability, and tableless CSS"

"Remember, nobody gets excited about the tools used to build a house ("Please tell me what brand of hammers you used!"). People get excited about how the house looks and performs."

"I learned quickly that business executives didn't care about usability testing or information design"

"There seems to be a cult belief that if we use Web Standards, usability, and tableless CSS, our web sites will make money, we'll be famous (or at least cool), and our sites will look great. It isn't that easy."

  6. help?

    Date: 07/21/05     Keywords: css

Okay. In my quest to learn how to build a page by using css instead of tables I've run into a bit of a snag.

    The page

    The css

Problem would that when viewing in firefox the tops of the 2 containers don't line up, even though the top margins are both set at 10px. Plus the left margin doesn't really look like it's 10px either.

    Am I missing something?

  7. help with a million new windows

    Date: 07/21/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Hello everyone!

I am having a "open a new window" problem, in which my supervisor wants a new window of a specific size to open up upon clicking a link. That's fine. When clicking a link in that small window, she wants a new window with a PDF file to open up. Also fine. However, when the user goes back to the main page, and clicks on a new pop-up window of a specific size, she wants the previous small window of a specific size to close, or to be replaced by this new one. How would I go about doing this? I was trying to look online, but I might be using the wrong search words. Perhaps if that window was called "small-pop-up" and I made it so that always the small pop-ups open in that window only, if it is already open... Any ideas? And I'm using Dreamweaver MX... Thanks! Hello all. I've been reading this community for about 2 weeks and now I have a question.

Here's the problem: if you view my website in Firefox, montoyaiscool.com, and then try to add it to the favorites, you get the right address, but the title is "[object HTMLImageElement]."

This is really wierd, and it doesn't happen in IE. Anyone know what's wrong?

Someone said that he works around DMX's crap. So, does anyone mind warning me about DMX's crap and any other useful information about the application to a beginner in using HTML editors? I sorta know HTML and CSS, I swear I do, I just hate using HTML editors. I prefer manual coding. -_-

Oh, and how can Netscape NOT support table border colors? What's up with that?!

  15. Coder/Designer?

    Date: 07/19/05     Keywords: web

Most Web Designers, especially in this forum, seem to be code experts. You all have seemed like a very knowlegable resource and you know how code, navigation, and graphics should be done effectively.

I am not a coder, I'm trained in graphics. I believe that most people benefit from being experts at both creativity and technicality, but I am still not yet a coder.

It seems that as complex as coding is, graphic artists need coding specialists. Perhaps there are coders who need graphics specialists as well.

I have a freelance proposition from someone who needs my graphics abilities, not my coding. They want me to be creative and they want to code it themsselves. Wow. Perfect match right?

Do any of you work this way? Are you strictly a coder, do you make graphics and code, or do you ever get jobs that simply call for you to be creative and make graphics? How does payment work when you're the graphic artist but you're not building the site?

  16. Dreamweaver/Tables

    Date: 07/18/05     Keywords: web

I'm using Dreamweaver MX 2004, if it matters. This is my first time using a webpage maker.

The problem: what I see when I "design" is not what I see in "preview."

    in design (desired)

    in preview (undesired)

As you can see, the text in the first box is no longer centered vertically, and also, the width grew. It looks as if maybe the whole table width increase too.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong, and how to fix that? Thanks in advanced. ^_^

Date: 07/17/05     Keywords: cms, php, mysql, database, sql

I know, another "what CMS should I use?" question. But hear me out. I'm looking for a CMS that's flexible, easy to set up, allows all users to submit content, and has some sort of mechanism for reviewing items (like Epinions or Amazon or Yelp.)

I can run PHP (safe mode only) or Perl, and I've got a MySQL database.

    Any suggestions? Please?

  19. multi-line replace feature

    Date: 07/16/05     Keywords: html

Hello! Can any of you kind folks recommend a good free Windows text editor that has a multi-line replace feature? Ideally, it would have some html syntax highlighting and maybe accept some kind of wildcard character.

I've downloaded some that claim to have it, but instead of a line break, you need to put in some magic set of "aij'p" characters that are supposed to stand for a line break, and you can only see one long line. Which is better than nothing, but very annoying.

Any input you have would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  20. this is hell

Date: 07/15/05     Keywords: php, browser, web, hosting

Hello everyone! I'm at a real loss with this website I'm developing. You might remember I posted about making an enrollment form, and you were all super helpful. The thing is that the server hosting the site does not support any scripting, so I've had to code the page the retard way (http://www.cfs.purdue.edu/itsi/testitems/EnrollmentForm1.htm). The people want there to be at least a confirmation page show when the person submits the e-mail, which I have included. However, the page shows up if the user presses submit, regardless of whether or not it has submitted, and in a new window. This is just done using Dreamweaver options to open a browser window upon submit.

Can anyone take a look at it and tell me what in the world I can do for these folks? I've looked online, everyone says PHP, scripts... I'm going nowhere on it.
