1. Suggestions

    Date: 06/14/05     Keywords: web

    With no disrepect to the community mod I have some suggestions for the community.

    Can we put together some resources and post them on the profile of the community to help answer most of the redundant "how to make my lj look pretty" questions? I understand some don't mean any harm and are just looking for help but there's lots of other good customize your lj communities and it'd be nice to keep atleast one design community clean and on topic for people who really want to understand and discuss web design and developement.

    we can also add links to commonly asks questions.

    We can all contribute some more useful links to put on the profile page to learn more about design and developement.

    And I remember someone before suggesting a redesign for the community and a new icon. We can make this a group effort and all vote on the best designs. I really think a redesign would do us well.

    I know some people have suggested these things before but I think we should really do them this time. I'd like to see this place grow.

    What can I do?

    how do you make a table scroll? i'm trying to avoid iframes.. and i'm sure i've seen some websites that have a table that can scroll.

    i could just be making this up - but if it's possible, i want to know lol!
    if the above is possible, can you have a hyperlink be targeted to a table cell?

    thanks in advance.

  8. Forced refresh??

    Date: 06/12/05     Keywords: java, web

    When I make changes or updates to my website, I've been noticing that I must refresh, or even hard-refresh the page before I can see the changes. I don't want visitors to the site to have to do this. Is there a way around it? Is there a javascript of some sort that would refresh for them?

    Thanks all! And I apologize for any x-posting.

  10. Imagemaps and onClick

    Date: 06/12/05     Keywords: html, java, web

    Hey Java guys and gals,

    I'm working on using an imagemap as a main navigation for my band's website. If you go to http://www.ericstevenslive.com and click on the HTML site button, you'll get to the mainpage which is simply one big image map.

    I'm trying to make the "News" button open the Band News page in a another window created by the function doNew1(). Here's the code:

    for my image map news area:

    onmouseover="window.status = '- Band News -'; return true"

    onmouseout="window.status = '- The Official Eric Stevens Website -'; return true" href="#">

    and for the script:

    function doNew1() {

    var myPic1 = ""

      if (myPic1.name == null) {

        myPic1 = window.open("newsshell.html","subwindow","width=600,height=400,toolbar=no,location=no,directories=no,status=no,menubar=no,scrollbars=no,copyhistory=no, resizable=no,left=200,top=250,screenX=200,screenY=250")

      } else{

        myPic1.focus()

      }

    }

    The problem is that the window will not open when you click in the News area at all. I tried using the same onClick command with an image and a regular HREF and it seems to work fine.

    So, why is it not working in the imagemap, am I missing something?
    Please help, I have tried practically everything, thanks!

  11. ISP Providers

    Date: 06/11/05     Keywords: no keywords

    I've been with earthlink for over two years, (on dial-up, i refuse to get a cable connection and living alone in NYC, one has to make certain sacrifices) and am looking to switch. But i'm wondering if anyone could recommend another IPS that is good, such as one of the little old ten bucks a month deals. Paying earthlink 21.00 a month for dial-up just seems stupid.

    any info is greatly appreciated!

  15. layers in dreamweaver?

    Date: 06/10/05     Keywords: technology, web

    Dreamweaver MX question:
    I'm working with layers, which I've never done before and would not normally do. I'm teaching a set curriculum to kids at a technology camp, so its inevitable.

    The lesson involves using a layer to animate an element on their website. I'm trying to do this myself so I can help them do it, but it's not working. I'm using a transparant gif. The timeline appears as it should, moves as it should when I drag the playhead, but the gif does not move when I preview in IE 6.

    Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

  16. css help

    Date: 06/10/05     Keywords: css

    Re doign my site and i cant seem to figure this out.
    The idea is to have a right column at 100% height and 200px width and a left column where all the content will go.

    wheni tried this it worked in mozzilla but not in IE. I'm on a PC at the moment and havn't looked at it at home on a mac yet so if anyone can check that'd be awesome.

    Here's the css:

    #main {
    background:#ffffff;
    margin-left: 0px;
    margin-right:200px;
    border:1px solid #000;
    margin-left: 0px;
    margin-right:200px;
    margin-top: 0px;
    }

    #right {
    position: absolute;
    right:0px;
    top:0px;
    width:200px;
    height:100%;
    background:#fff;
    border:1px solid #000;
    }

    #bottom{
    float:left;
    width: 300px;
    background:#ffffff;
    margin: 10px 0px 0px 0px;

    And a link to the page:
    here

    any help would be really really really great.

    thanks!

  17. Best method?

    Date: 06/09/05     Keywords: html, web

    Is there a best method to web design?

    Elitists often say there is no replacement for quality straight html coding. This is what I know and what I've been using. I'd like to learn programs like Dreamweaver and GoLive because it seems that tedious coding can be done much more easily.

    Do a lot of people utilize the slice tool in Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator? What's the best way of going about that? Do you just set up your layers exactly as you want them and slice out wherever you want links? Is this a common approach?

    Thanks all!

  18. PHP include question

    Date: 06/08/05     Keywords: php, html

    If I'm including an HTML file using php, does the included file need all the header stuff? cause it's appearing in my code and I dont think my *.php file should have two tags

    Look at the source here to see what i mean...

    [EDIT]And thanks '[info]'pyrophire for pointing out another problem...

    In firefox, the background image for the "maincnt" div is positioned all wonky (the bottom right hand corning of the images appears in the top left corner of the div) why is this? and more importantly...how can i fix this?
