1. 2 Questions

    Date: 06/08/05     Keywords: css, html

I'm having trouble with two things on two different layouts:

Here, you can see in the HTML and CSS that there is a div called 'nav'. However, 'nav' does not display. When I had simply nested div's it did show, but when I converted it to an iframe nested in a div, it disappeared. How do I get it to display again?

Question #2 has to do with the IE Box Model Hack. I don't really understand it too much, but here(please view in IE) I want to expand the iframe to the end of the right side of the page, but the whole width thing in objects is getting in the way. Because of the picture, I needed to use pixel amounts not percentages. However, I can't exactly declare the iframe to be a certain width because of monitor resolutions.

    Any help would be appreciated!

  2. No Character Encoding Found!

    Date: 06/08/05     Keywords: no keywords

I tried to validate my code at validate.w3.org, and I was told this:

No Character Encoding Found! Falling back to UTF-8.I was not able to extract a character encoding labeling from any of the valid sources for such information. Without encoding information it is impossible to reliably validate the document. I'm falling back to the "UTF-8" encoding and will attempt to perform the validation, but this is likely to fail for all non-trivial documents.

    What does it mean??

  3. CSS??

    Date: 06/07/05     Keywords: css

    Hello,

I am making a quick site and it seems to be displaying oddly in Internet Explorer, but fine in Firefox.

The CSS for the page can be found here:

    http://testsite.voxtheatre.ca/layout.css

and the actual page (nothing much yet, just trying to get the look) is here:

    http://testsite.voxtheatre.ca/index2.htm

Before anyone says anything, I know frames are bad. This client is stubborn and will no relent on having the nav on the bottom, fixed in place and content at the top.

This is frankly just for the positioning right now, which is way out of wack in IE.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Right now my site is basically a portfolio page, some images and some flash animations. I plan on up loading more flash in the near future (not tons) but am looking for a host with a reasonable plan and enough space so I won't have to worry. Any recommondations?????? Oh-- and the cheaper the better.

  6. Money question

    Date: 06/05/05     Keywords: web

I have never done any freelance work for a paying client before. I might be doing some paid web work in the near future for a very small local business. Getting paid is great, but experience and having something to put in my portfolio is even more valuable to me. I would assume an hourly rate is best? As far as how much the rate should be...I am a beginner, but I don't want to sell myself too short. I know I can do a good job. I also don't want to charge too much and risk losing the cliente. I haven't had many opportunities to do actual work, and I'm very excited about this.

Also, having limited experience with this type of work, I would not be sure of how long this job would take me...giving the cliente a price estimate off the bat might be difficult.

    My questions are:
-Should I charge an hourly rate?
-If so, what's a fair rate? Or if not, what's a good flat rate for setting up a website? (I know a flat rate probably depends on many factors.)
-How do I handle an estimate going into the job?

    Thanks everyone!

  7. Framed Sites

    Date: 06/03/05     Keywords: no keywords

Can someone give me some advice on how to optimize framed sites? Or point me in the direction of some easy-to-understand help-pages? It's always been my understanding that framed sites were very difficult to get listed, but I've recently come across quite a few that have a very high profile, so what's their secret?

  10. DVD-ROM Question

Date: 06/03/05     Keywords: browser, html, web

This is slightly off-topic, but I'm hoping someone here might know how to do this.

Does anyone know if it's possible to cause a users default web browser to open upon insertion of a DVD-ROM? I have a client who wants an HTML site with a menu list of links to other files stored on a DVD, and would like end users to access the interface via their web browser. Is there some way to set it to auto play, which would then open the browser and the interface?

  11. Long time lurker; First time poster. Heh.

    Date: 06/02/05     Keywords: html

Have kind of a strange question. Does anyone know how to make one of those silvery-transparent backgrounds? I've seen them on a few sites, and can't recall the names/addresses off the top of my head. I'm helping a friend mock up her site, and that's something she wants.

http://antithesis.dyndns.org/stuff/index.html is the rough mock (No, we don't plan on using a huge background image as such, etc etc.) The 'content' div is where i'm talking about. Anyone know how to make something so we can make the background of that partially transparent?

  12. sliced image not all loading

    Date: 06/02/05     Keywords: web

    Hello, me again...
I've got a portfolio page here that brings up individual images of garden buildings. I've sliced the individual images into four slices - but for some reason not all of the slices always load for the client. Each of the slices is around 14k-20k which I guess is a little on the large side, but I don't want to lose quality of image. He's on dial-up - but I can't really that blame for the problem either!

Can anyone suggest why the slices won't all load for him? I don't want to think that it's due to the site being in Tripod webspace, but I have had problems with them before.

  15. best forum for coldfusion developers?

Date: 05/31/05     Keywords: php, software, java, web, google

Hi folks, new to the community, and new to ColdFusion - however I have many years of experience in software development and web design using other languages and technologies.

I've checked out the excellent ColdFusion links in the community userinfo, and beyond those I was wondering - where's the best online forum out there for ColdFusion developer brainshare?

I saw the one at Macromedia's own site, it was okay but not very impressive. Coming from other development communities like PHP and Java I was wondering if the ColdFusion community is just much less talkative, and that's as good as it gets? Also I'm usually leary of forums run by software manufacturers, as sometimes they are questionably moderated when critcism gets posted.

Anyways thanks in advance for any reccomendations. Serious CF developers only please - I can Google for random sites all by myself. I'm wondering what the "pros" prefer.

  16. Footer in CSS

Date: 05/31/05     Keywords: php, css, html, web

Ok...what am I doing wrong? I decided to really try to conquer CSS. I created a site that looks fine in IE, but in Netscape and Firefox, it looks crappy. What am I missing??

    http://www.activedigitalmedia.com/azzarello/index.php

How do I get the footer to actually go to the bottom of the page??

Anyone here adept at using html in custom LJ styles? I need help with my journal style, I want to add my userpic to each entry on the main page, and it's being difficult.
Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance. :)

  17. Site critique

    Date: 05/30/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm redesigning my site for the first time in forever.

I'm also experimenting with dreamweaver. I must say the manage site feature is handier than having WS_FTP open all the time.

So I tried to do this whole site in Dreamweaver (only delving into code to enter the chatterbox code, and to fix *some* validation errors it gave me.

I'd just like a critique on the site. I've only done one page so far, but I'd rather fix stuff now than when I have an entire site done.

    http://img.code-bubble.net/newsite/

    There's the site. Critique please!

[EDIT] For the main content, do you suggest I use iframes (the easy way that I've been doing for a while now) or make lots of separate pages (amounting to about 11 pages)?[/EDIT]

  18. Advice and Opinions Needed For a Pal

    Date: 05/28/05     Keywords: web

Hi Guys, I need a favor. My boyfriend Scott's been working with a designer on his new web site and I would like your honest feedback so we can incorporate it before he finalizes the design. Scott worked on this for hours and hours tonight and thought he was finally done. He was really hoping I would give it a big thumbs up, but I couldn't. I know how important this is to him, and I really want it to be representative of him; professional, attractive, and a good marketing tool that will help him sell his music and talent.

I have some complaints with the site, and I can't pretend that I don't -- not huge complaints -- I think it can be improved tremendously with a few changes. It kills me that in giving Scott my honest feedback I disappointed him and hurt his feelings. I love him so much, but I think he may have kind of cluttered it up and the designer, wanting to please his client, may have gone along with some ideas he might not have originally chosen. I had seen a simpler outline, a snapshot of what the site was going to look like, and I liked it. I mean I wouldn't choose these colors and style for myself, but for Scott it's cool. He needs to convey that a lot of the songs on the album are reggae so the colors make sense for this.

I respect your taste and opinions so much, and I just honestly want to know what you think. If you have the time, and feel like being generous and helpful to a fellow struggling artist, who really needs a good site to showcase his work, would you look over his site and give us some feedback? We won't hold it against you in any way, and would in fact be super appreciative. If you think it's fabulous as is, we want to know that. If you think it just needs a little work, then we want to know that. If you hate it, then hard as that might be for Scott to face, then we need to know that.

I'd like to know what you think of the bold strokes and the smaller ones. I'm particularly interested in what you think about the lion imagery and the photographs of Scott, are there some pictures that you do and some pictures that you do not like? If so what are they? Are there any graphic images on the site that appeal or do not appeal to you? What about the navigation? What about the text? I could just really use another eye here because without a second and a third opinion I can't convince Scott that there are some areas of this site that are kind of graphically unprofessional, if that makes any sense. I know I'm asking a lot, so I'll appreciate any feedback you'd be generous enough to give.

I wish I could just come out and say, "I don't like the image of the sad clowny face on page three, what do you think?" because that's what I'd do, but Scott thinks I am being hyper-critical and I don't want to direct your attention to the few things I don't like because maybe I am being too hard on this. I'd rather get your unbiased opinions.

Okay, now this isn't a great picture of Scott, but this is the idea, to remove an element of color leaving part of the image in black and white. I liked this effect.

One thing I'm realizing that we're missing here is what drew us to this designer in the first place; his use of color hilighted against parts of the image where he had removed the color, leaving these areas in black and white. I want to show you what I mean but I can't find the link, in the meantime here's a link to the web site Daniel, (the designer), designed for his sweet girlfriend, Jill Marie. I'm wondering why they chose not to do the cool black and white thing on Scott's site when this was the main thing we liked about his work to begin with... Oh and I'm also noticing that Scott's music isn't playing when you go to the site. I wonder why they chose not to do that. Hmm... Anyway, if you'd like to take a stab at this, we would be so grateful.

    Big loving hugs,
    Jacqui and Scott

  19. Flash question

    Date: 05/27/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Hey everyone...
I'm having a problem I've never seen before in Flash and I'm wondering if anyone elase has run into this. I am working on a Mac G4 tower, and I have created an animated button. Essentially its a blue bar with white text, and when you hover over it a black box opens up behind it. Fairly simple...I've done these a million times with no problems. Now all of a sudden, my text does not appear on the button after its published. The blue bar is there, the black box opens up, but the text is simply not there. I gave it to my friend who is using a PC and the text showed right up. I've been through all my publish settings and I can't find anything set wrong or anything that would cause this. Has anyone ever seen a flash element that shows up on a PC but not a Mac?

Thanks in advance for any help.

  20. More PHP help. :\

Date: 05/27/05     Keywords: php, mysql, database, sql, web

I'm working away at this PHP + MySQL stuff...

Now I have two tables - links and linkcats. Links is a list of links that will be displayed on the Employee Resources page. Linkcats is a list of the categories under which these links will fall - Intranet Websites, Internet Websites, and Employee Resources. I would like to be able to dynamically display the link categories with the appropriate links from the links table under each category. I got it to work (kind of), but it loops through the SQL statement to display the actual links however many entries there are in the categories table.

You can see what I'm talking about here:
    http://www.shifuimam.com/php_tutorials/database_trial/www/mclinks.php

This is my code, along with the descriptions of the two tables:

    Any help is appreciated.
