1. Articles

    Date: 05/19/05     Keywords: php

In the process of redesigning and restructuring my site, as some may already know, and I'm looking for a script (preferably PHP) that will help with posting articles. I've found a few good free ones, but I'm looking for one that also has a rating system. As I'm already bogged down with scripting myself, any suggestions?
And hi to the rather attractive girl... :D

  2. Netscape 8

    Date: 05/19/05     Keywords: browser

Just when I thought things weren't going to suddenly get a whole lot more interesting on the browser front... they do.

The Register reports on the new Netscape 8 release. Anti-phishing blocklists. Twin Firefox (Gecko) / Internet Explorer rendering engines.

This could be interesting. A transition, perhaps, for all those IE-based sites, in the eyes of the consumer. That said, it could also slow down the speed of standards adoption, which could be a Bad Thing.

That said, I'm actually tempted to try it...

  3. CSS Cheat Sheet

    Date: 05/19/05     Keywords: php, css

Hello. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Quick question. Awhile back someone posted a link to a CSS and PHP cheat sheet. I can't remember if it was an actual post or in a comment, but I searched the community and can't find the information. Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks in advance!

  5. PVII Snap Layers Behaviour

    Date: 05/18/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm in the process of designing a site for someone who wants a 'gallery' page that will feature a grid of clickable thumbnails of his work which will reveal the full-version on the right side of the grid. I'd usually do this kind of site in 2 frames, but thought I might have a go at using Project Seven's Snap Layers behaviour instead, as there are only 9 images in the gallery.

But here's the page in question: Furniture Gallery.

In Safari, SnapLayers brings the image in in just the right spot - to the right and aligned with the white 5x5px image I've put in the table to lock it to. In Explorer it brings it in about 20pixels below. Can anyone suggest why this might be? It's driving me kind of bats@*t trying to figure it out. Alternatively maybe someone could suggest a different, non-frames way of doing this? And ixnay on the patronisationay, ok? I know my slices have gone all to cock. It's been a long day.

  6. Website Crit...

    Date: 05/18/05     Keywords: web

    Afternoon guys.

We're having a website built for the agency I work for and I need to get some opinions, mainly on the intro bit, and mainly on aesthetics rather than build/coding.

In my bosses words "Can you please forward to friends, family whoever and ask for their comments on our new site. I want to get lots of opinions on this one. Ask people to be honest - if they don't like the site I'd like to know why and what parts they don't like. Ta"

    so here it is... http://clients.redder.co.uk/wave/

    Thanks in advance

  7. weird question...

Date: 05/18/05     Keywords: php, mysql, database, asp, sql

How difficult is it to learn PHP for use with a MySQL database? And how difficult is it to create the MySQL database? Like, would it take me months? I have no previous PHP experience...I've only ever done ASP.NET with VB.NET.

I'm going to be starting a new project at my summer internship, and I'm wondering if it's worth it to focus on this particular part of it (or if I need to just setup a prototype of how the data display will look, and tell them they need to find someone with PHP/MySQL experience to create the actual database and code).

  8. Under-charging?

    Date: 05/17/05     Keywords: no keywords

I posted this site of mine on here a while ago and asked for some critics to come forth and comment. Thanks again to all that did.

I never asked the question "What do you think I should have charged?"

Now, that is what I am wondering. I often think that I may be charging too little for my work, but I want other people's thoughts.

    The site is here: http://www.vincemeno.com

The news and shows data are updated by the client. If either section's data looks ugly, don't hold it against me, haha.

Excuse me from borrowing a question from the whole "amber_kaye incident"

    Peace ^-^

  9. Seeking Redesign Advice

Date: 05/17/05     Keywords: css, html, asp, web

I’m planning a site redesign in order to take advantage of CSS and XHTML. My existing site uses frames, is heavy on graphics - and the architecture combines several different enterprises along with some more personal pages. At this point I’m looking for some general ideas about approaching the redesign:

ie: whether to split off the personal aspect of the site, to split off the various enterprises (illustration portfolio, web design portfolio, fine craftwork sales site and an online coloring book) and if so, along what lines. If I split things off would I still want a portal page to tie things together?

I’m also looking for feedback about how to showcase both CSS skills and Flash skills; I want to take advantage of both, and am wondering what people think are the best roles for each of these tools. Where is CSS best used? What are the best uses for Flash? Is it feasible to use Flash in the context of a CSS design?

At the same time, I really hate to get rid of Frames. They are easy and useful for creating a thumbnail menu to display larger image files. Does anyone have suggestions for equally easy and useful alternatives for displaying portfolio images?

  10. Advice?

    Date: 05/17/05     Keywords: web

Hello, all. I redesigned my website a month or so ago, and overall I'm pretty pleased with it...but one thing really bothers me--the boxes on the right side. I'm not sure why, but they just feel...off. If you could, I would really appreciate any comments on the design and in particular those boxes. Also: would you advise keeping that right side blank for consistancy purposes on pages without boxes at the right, or letting the main content on the non-main pages stretch to the side?

I admit that backend stuff is my forte, not design. This is the first incarnation of my site (since 2001) that doesn't feature copious amounts of purple, white, and black (colors I knew looked fine together)...so comments on the color choice is appreciated, too. For the record, I used this site to come up with the color scheme. It's a pretty useful page, especially for those of us who have no sense of what colors look nice together. :)

Thanks in advance for your comments.

  12. community redesign?

    Date: 05/17/05     Keywords: web

someone should seriously redesign the layout of this community. and the lj icons for it. it's not that i look at it that often... i read the posts from my friends page... but it just doesn't seem right to have such a plain, non-designed page for the web design community.

    good idea?

  15. Question of the day.

Date: 05/16/05     Keywords: mysql, css, sql, web

So I know there has been MUCH talk about how CSS is the new standard to replace tables and such.. well I was struggling with learning exactly how it all played out.. until.. well I opened my eyes.. for all those Dreamweaver folks out there.. there are some prebuilt CSS page layouts that if you simply look them over, show you exactly how it's done and in good fashion as well.. so I'm now on my way to learning how to use CSS as the brains behind my web layouts from here on.. so there's my tip of the day.. now.. on to the topic at hand..

.. can anyone recommend a good DB Converter.. one such as Access to MySQL?..

    Thanks in advance.

  17. Editing a live site

    Date: 05/14/05     Keywords: php, web

When some sites are undergoing maintainance a user may see an "under maintainance come back later" message when visiting the site. Most of the time they'll see this message no matter what part of the site they try to visit. I'm still very dinosaur when it comes to web design so I still write everything by hand and when I do have some php I need to work on I need to work on it live. Sometimes however I want to be able to work on the site or make updates without having people be able to interact with the site... I want to do this without renaming any files (esp. the index file), any directories, or moving anything around. How is it done?

how do i get rid of this?
    or,
if i can't get rid of the border - why aren't they the colour of normal links as indicated in the style.css document?

    help =( i don't like it.

  19. Nominate my site

    Date: 05/13/05     Keywords: no keywords

I deployed a nice video embedding style on one of my sites, janleighton.com.

Please nominate for the upcoming Flash Festival by going here. It's a really quick one page form and extra nominations couldn't hurt.

Just fill out the required fields in Orange. The others don't matter. I'm trying to get nominated for the Video Category and the Title of the Work is "Man of 3000 Faces".

The deadline is today at 8:00 PM EDT. Please help me out.

    Thanks :)

  20. JPEGs and Flash

    Date: 05/13/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Easy question:

Without downgrading my images to GIF, is there any way to get images created in photoshop into Flash with the ability to erase the BG color present in the photoshop image?

For example, im trying to import a JPEG made in photoshop to Flash. In Flash, the image will be pasted on top of a gradient background. Therefore, the JPEG's BG color (which is white) needs to go away because otherwise you see the nice big white box around the image.

Are there any tricks? Is it easy and I'm a moron? Help!?
